Malaysian Flight 370 Search Finds Pings 'Consistent With Signal From Black Box'
SEARCHERS looking for the wreckage of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane have detected signals consistent with transmissions from black boxes.
In what he described as a “most promising lead”, former defence chief Angus Houston said US Navy equipment on the Australian vessel Ocean Shield had picked up signals on two separate occasions in the northern part of the Indian Ocean search zone.
“The towed pinger locator deployed from the Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield has detected signals consistent with those emitted from aircraft black boxes,’’ said Air Chief Marshal Houston, who is leading the search coordination body.
He called the development “very encouraging’’ but said it may take days to confirm whether the signals are indeed from the flight recorders on Flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8 and which is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean.
The sounds were detected on two occasions over a period totalling more than two and a half hours.
“Clearly this is a most promising lead, and probably in the search so far, it’s the probably the best information that we have had,’’ Air Chief Marshal Houston told reporters.

AFTER earlier speculation about the discovery of the black box (see below..), the PM and the search controllers seemed to take a step back later in the day, to state that they were pretty sure that they had located the black box; and had narrowed the search zone even more..
(I'VE just managed to get back on the internet a few minutes ago !)>
THE folioing was posted at ~ 13:00 hours AEST ~ that was around 4:00 am UT (GMT) ~ it's taken over 8 hours already to upload !
A "BLACK BOX" has been found in the Indian Ocean earlier today, it has been been reported on radio bulletins down here over the last couple of hours...
STILL to be confirmed where exactly it is from..

To be honest I am fed up with the media outlets from all sides.....the only breaking news flashes should be that they have found the plane or wreckage....all this endless speculation, conspiracy theories, casting aspersions on flight crew means nothing but torture for the families of all aboard - all these talkings heads are not doing anything - just getting paid for talking a lot of nothing.

Seems like a very good idea. All these rumours and theories must be driving the friends, relatives and loved ones round the bend.

Normally I would make a flippant comment now but this is too serious.
Thanks though. I think I started to lose patience with it all back when Heath Ledger died....the endless loops of the same thing....I suppose it can be traced back to 9/11 really. I remember commenting on the running scroll breaking news back in 2003 when visiting Florida for Xmas.....and British news outlets soon started doing the same. I honestly tune out after a while and that is a shame because then you may miss out true newsworthy items. As a librarian I am trained to sift the good from the bad or indifferent and be against censorship but this whole have to be top if the ratings style is crap and turning off people.
Rant over.

Well, don't add to it Bee. In this atmosphere, even if you are jesting someone will latch on and take a conspiracy ride. Lol
Ben, I like your professor's expression, except where it fails to respect the power of disbelief. It takes a great deal of effort to actively disbelieve--science is built on skepticism; and all facts are corrigible. We've learned a lot from disbelief: that the world isn't flat; that the sun doesn't go around the earth; and that there's no gold at the end of the rainbow.
As for Flight 370, none of us have any basis in fact for believing anything after the aircraft left the Malacca Strait. From that point it could have flown anywhere. That it went south is based upon the thinnest of straws. For my part, the trail ends north of the equator.

YESTERDAY, it was announced that the search zone is again being extended, this time back west again a few hundred clicks, after the search area contracted around where those "pings" were last heard a couple of weeks ago..
THAT announcement comes after late last week suggesting they will now consider bringing in a heavier US Navy robot sub', and maybe even some commercial rigs used in the oil and gas industry, that can search below 7500 metres depth.
As long as they keep searching that's the main thing. And I'm sure the Australian authorities are grateful to the US for providing additional support in what is an extremely difficult task.
And if there had been less of the intimidating comments like you have just posted in your first paragraph then the other Malaysian threads may not have ended up like they did.
So back on topic then....

If the plane did come down, I doubt very much anything can be done now.
So why are they continuing with these searches that are costing millions and building up false hope with the families, who already will have many years with no closure as to how their relatives died.

On the news this morning: Your PM announced that they are suspending the air search. Also announced, the undersea search will go on for 8-months more.

No, I don't think they've given up. There's a difference between makin' busy, and doing something meaningful. There's nothing to be gained from the air search, and everything to be gained by the undersea effort.
But I will ask, in passing: if the standard is that all relevant information is to be given to the victims and their families, doesn't someone have an obligation to tell them when the search becomes fruitless? When that is, is a subjective concern. But it is possible theoretically that such a day will come.

Well, they are obviously NOT giving up, but have recognised that the undersea search is more important.
As posted on the other thread, this from yesterday:
Obama Offers More Help In Missing Plane Hunt
The US president promises whatever resources are necessary to find the Malaysian Boeing 777 that disappeared en route to Beijing.
US President Barack Obama has promised more help in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, while in the country on a visit.
Mr Obama said America was fully committed to providing more assets to assist in the search for flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean.
"I can tell you the United States is absolutely committed to providing whatever resources and assets that we can," Mr Obama told a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.
A US Navy robotic submarine has been scanning a patch of the Indian Ocean seabed but has been unable to find any trace of the Boeing 777.
The search is as much in the interest of America as it is in Malaysia's as experts say it is essential to find out why the US-built plane could have veered so far off course.
Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 while on route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, but was later traced to an area about 1,000 miles (1,500km) off Australia's west coast.
More than seven weeks after the jet carrying 239 people vanished, authorities are now regrouping to decide how to proceed.
The Australia-based Joint Agency Coordination Centre, which is in charge of the search, told Reuters: "We are currently consulting very closely with our international partners on the best way to continue the search into the future."
Malaysia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Britain and the United States are assisting Australia in the most expensive search in aviation history.
Mr Obama said: "Obviously we don't know all the details but we do know, if in fact the plane went down in the ocean on this part of this world, there is a big place and it is very challenging effort and laboriously effort.
"It is going to take quite some time."
A US defence official told Reuters on Friday that the search was likely to drag on for years.
The official said the hunt was entering a much more difficult phase, which will involve scouring broader areas of the ocean near where the plane is believed to have crashed.
Australia and Malaysia have been under pressure to bring closure to the grieving families of those on board MH370 by finding anything that may help determine what happened to the aircraft.
Malaysia is also under growing pressure to disclose more about its investigation into what happened, although Mr Obama said the country had been "fully forthcoming" in sharing information.
Mr Najib has said his government would make public a preliminary report into the plane's disappearance next week.
Until now, the undersea search has been focused on a 10 square km (6.2 square mile) zone where a series of "pings" were detected earlier this month.
This will be extended if the US Bluefin-21 submarine fails to find anything.

The main thing is that they are continuing the search and focusing on the most effective means they have of finding where this aircraft has ended up.
It took 67 years to locate the wreck of HMAS Sydney in the Southern Indian Ocean but they found her eventually by using the techniques currently being deployed in using underwater sonar scanners.
They're not going to let this one go.

An exploration company claims to have found the missing Malaysian Airlines MH370 over 3,000 miles away from the current official search location. Australian independent explorers, GeoResonance, who are based in Adelaide, used satellite and radar imagery, aircraft data and over 20 other sorts technologies, including a nuclear reactor, to analyse various information, gleaned from search area of 2 million square kilometres. The independent experts came to the conclusion that the wreckage of the doomed jet is in the Bay of Bengal in the north-eastern part of the Indian Ocean and firmly believe that the official search is concentrated in the wrong place.
Malaysian transport minister, Hishamuddin Hussein, has promised to meet with GeoResonance to investigate their claims about the flight which vanished on 8th March with 239 people on board. The location of the plane has, up until now, baffled experts.

At least it's something else to go on HM so let's hope it turns up something that can bring some closure to the families who are desperate to find out what happened to their loved one's and end all these conspiracy theories about Diego Garcia etc.
