This recession is exactly the opportunity that wealthy, powerful interests and their conservative/anti-labor allies have been waiting for. They blame all economic calamity on the programs that save people from the worst aspects of economic calamity (instead of their own reckless gambling) and take these steps to widen the wealth gap between themselves and the rest of us, telling us it's the only way out of this mess.

Studying the Great Depression and how governments around the world pulled their people out of it shows us everything we need to know. The market alone is not the solution to every problem, and if we let these market-worshipers win, we'll all be worse off -- and they will too! Crime is driven by economic despair, and everyone is less safe in a nation full of desperate people.
