U.S. advert depicting Michelangelo's 'David' holding rifle causes stir in Italy
Italy's culture minister has expressed outrage over an advertisement by a US weapons firm showing Michelangelo's David holding a rifle.
Dario Franceschini said the image was offensive and violated the law.
A number of Italian media web sites carried the image of the advertisement showing David holding a bolt-action rifle.
The advertisement, from Illinois-based ArmaLite, carries the line "a work of art" in promoting the $3,000 rifle.
Mr Franceschini urged the company to withdraw the advertisement for the AR-50A1.
He said in a tweet: "The image of David, armed, offends and infringes the law. We will take action against the American company so that it immediately withdraws its campaign."
Historical Heritage and Fine Arts Board curator Cristina Acidini has issued a legal notice to ArmaLite to withdraw the image, saying it distorts the artwork.
The government says it has copyright on the commercial use of images of David.

Italians have nothing to brag about. One time when I was accompanying some African women on a museum tour in Rome, I caught them snickering at the ancient statures. I asked them what was funny.
They said, If our men were that tiny, we'd make them put their clothes back on.

At the time, it was considered that a large penis equaled a small brain, and intellect was regarded as the most masculine attainment, so they carried on from Greek art, that thought the same thing. They considered that to have a statue of a man with a large penis was too animalistic.

I know it isn't relevant to the OP- but it actually disgusts me they feel the need to cover his manhood while advertising a lethal weapon- I mean ffs which should actually be the most offensive?

Oddly the first thing I thought when I saw that image was
Americans are SO gay/sissy, how much of issue must you have with your penis size for that ad to make you want to go and buy....
I just scrolled back up and.... SO SO gay ::smthg:: ::smthg:: ::smthg:: ::smthg::
No offence to Homosexuals

I don't know if I understand you fully, but I think the comparison that Armalite wants to make is to art, not the penis. Indeed, the penis in the statute is covered.

I suppose you can read that into it, but strictly speaking, it speaks of a work of art.

Yes the advertisers may be TRYING to suggest their penis extension is art but it is not, Sad sad penis envy is not art. A massed produced murder tool targeted at the under endowed is no more art than a 12inch purple dildo
