Falling in love.
First topic message reminder :
Transport yourself away from all the gloom and doom and think back to when (or if) you have fallen in love.
Did it last? Was he/she the love or your life? Has it happened many times in your life?
If you are single are you still waiting for love to come a calling...or have you given up on all that?
I'm sure your love story is interesting to others....it is to me anyway.

Yes, goofy-noofy is a Canadian name for someone from the island of Newfoundland. Apparently, Newfoundlanders are so isolated that they go stir-crazy, and either act differently, or say things differently. Anyway, Canadians think they are a little 'tetched".
I've encountered the same syndrome in Denmark, where the Danes have similar stories about people from the island Greenland. One is that they go out in the dead of winter, with only shorts and no shirt...and complain about the heat. They are...let us say, idiosyncratic.
We have people like that here, they are usually from Newcastle.

I tend to think you did the right thing. Even if he was on his deathbed (sounds like it), it is probably inappropriate to rekindle such feelings when you now have an intimate partner. You speak of a "special time in your life", and that shows that, though those times might be special, they were not meant to be permanent.
The permanent ones require time, not only past time, but future time. My goofy-noofy and I didn't have time, or occasion to make time. She ended up in Vancouver and I ended up in LA…geographically inconvenient, as these things go.
Goofy-noofy???
It's Goofy Newfie and it refers to the large breed of dog that was developed there.
Assuming this woman isn't a figment of Quills very active imagination, his clever name for her may explain their short lived romance. Be like calling a girl from Wales your silly Corgi.

Haha...yes, we all know the dog. They are masterful swimmers and are good dogs in winter. They are good in harsh terrain.
Sometimes they are called Newfie's, which is pronounced like noofy, but I've never heard of them called "goofy". Very respectable breed. Known for saving lives.

Never heard of it. As I said, Canadians call Newfoundlanders 'goofy-noofys'. Maybe the breed picked up the name from Canadian slang.
Out of curiosity, I looked it up:
So, it appears that the dictionary defines the term as the person, not the dog. As I suspected, it's a bit derogatory.

You should have had my parentage. My grandfather was a Scotch-Calvinist minister (and a lawyer), who got his divinity degree at the University of Glasgow. My father was a Bostonian Harvard-man, a real stiff upper-lip type. There was a lot of 'proper' in my house, growing up, but very few hugs and lovey-dovey.

The dictionary defines the word Newfie.
There really isn't a word noofy.
And when you put Goofy in front of Newfie, its generally referring to the breed of dog, because like many giant breeds, they are lovable old oafs.

Ty Syl. He's just flummoxed and frustrated, dealing with reality. I get right to the point, and cut away the bullshit. With that, he's got nowhere to go...except to go personal. It's repetitive, but I'm used to it.
Yes, my goofy-noofy was a special person in an exceptional era (it lasted almost a year) in my life. But everything was temporary, ya know? Temporary travel. Temporary cities. Temporary hotels. Temporary work places. Temporary dining places. Temporary friends. Why not a temporary lover?
Everything was dazzling and new...and too soon, gone. Without knowing it, I think I was fore-ordaining that relationship to end. Somehow, she got my number and called me once at my home in LA. Everything was Hi...how are you…yup, goin’ great, but I never heard from her again.

Sounds like it was a lovely time in your life Quill. Not every relationship is meant to last, if it was we would all marry our first love, and not many people do.Original Quill wrote:Syl wrote:

My first love ( the one who tried to get in touch decades later) was a Greek Cypriot man I fell in love with him at 17 and we were together till the night I called for that cab.
Funny how life turns out.

Childish indeed. Have an Actually, I usually like opponents, as the opposition gives me more chances to explain my thesis, extend it, or fill in the gaps.
But personal attacks are a form of cut and run. They abandon the message completely, and take out after the messenger. It's useless, because it proves that the attacker can't hold his own in a debate.
It's also disappointing because very often I can argue the other side better than the attacker can. Like chess, I think 3 - 4 moves ahead, and I see arguments that the attacker could have made, had he not abandoned the topic to turn on the messenger.
I'm reminded of Justice Douglas on the Supreme Court. One time he was on one side of a case, and Justice Goldberg was on the other side. Douglas wrote the prevailing opinion, and Goldberg was assigned the dissent. But Goldberg, who was known to be a slow writer, couldn't progress. C.J. Warren kept asking him, Is your dissent ready yet? He would say no, and ask for one more week. Finally, J. Douglas said, Why don't you let me take a crack at it? And that's how J. Douglas came to write both sides of a hotly contested case before the Supreme Court.

My mother was where I got my humanitarian ideas of empathy and compassion. She was an historian, while my father was a physician…which meant she was more in touch with issues of humanity, while he with issues of physiology and medicine.
She was from South Dakota (met my father at university). While my father and grandfather were strict, by-the-book, absolutists, she would sit me down and explain what it was like to be black and/or Jewish, and how they have been given a raw deal by the people they now call white supremacists.
It's interesting, because while my father's family were only lately from Scotland, my mother’s family were pre-Revolutionary folks from Virginia. They were loyalists during the Revolutionary war, and had to flee rebels to the Bahamas, thence to Canada, before reentering the US through the Dakotas in the nineteenth century. She was from truer American nobility than he.
My siblings are dispersed, with very little adhesion…probably because of my father’s aloofness, which fosters the disaffection. There were five siblings: the oldest a nuclear physicist; 2nd a son; 3rd a daughter who married a lawyer; 4th is me; and 5th a son, who is a diligent father and provider. I keep in contact with my oldest brother, because we both have PhD’s and find each other’s company interesting. He has some fascinating ideas about ET's, WARP mobility and Element 115 (moscovium), and we can talk for hours. Ben would love those conversations, because he has the same fascination.

what book? Mein Kampf? What does strict by-the-book, absolutists mean that your mother would need to counteract their opinions with talk of Jewish persecution or white supremacists? I'm confused on that
Also, empathy and compassion are great and all but did you hug much was my question. I only ask cos i'm a huge fan of hugs. I think the vibrational feelings you can get from a single hug are incredible.

Starting with my gdfather, they were both very reserved scotsmen. Scots, not German. Haven't you ever run into that Scotsman who keeps to himself, very reserved and outwardly indifferent.
Absolutists, in my mind, are people with little tolerance for differences and are quite judgmental. They have in mind a right and wrong, and no deviation. Particularly my gdfather, a religious moralist minister, turned attorney, fcs. If it helps you to understand, they were both Republicans.
As far as bigotry, blacks and Jews, the scots are disapproving of persecution, but ever mindful of people around them with bigoted views. My father advocated going slow, while I responded: There's never a wrong time to do the right thing! He and I got into it over this a lot, so much so that eventually he would not broach the subject with me.
They were island Scots...hard working, but reserved, cranky, and judgmental.

Depends.
You, Ben, Quill, Cass, Maddog, Gels, me and others are very open on forums. Then there are others who prefer to stay more aloof, and that's their prerogative.
So if someone declines to answer a question because they don't want to give that much of themselves away....their choice.

What a good topic Syl.
as it happens.... I proposed yesterday , she said Yes
she new it was coming but i still tried to make it a surprise and she was away that weekend so i had time
I made Dinner, which is normal, and I baked a cake for dessert which i will do if i am bored on the weekend and feel like cake.
but... I had carefully hollowed out a space in the bottom of the cake and but the ring (in a box) in there.
it almost come undone after dinner she said she was full and might have some cake later.
So I tried to be casual and got her to cut me a splice of cake...
she said she knew something was suss because i was getting her to cut the cake rather than just cutting myself some.
So she put the knife in and hit the box, realized what it was and ripped the cake open to get the box out.
She went to the kitchen to wash her hands and when she came back I did the traditional drop to one knee and asked her to be my wife.
I'll have to get a better photo off her phone

Did it last? Was he/she the love or your life? Has it happened many times in your life?
If you are single are you still waiting for love to come a calling...or have you given up on all that?
I'm sure your love story is interesting to others....it is to me anyway.

Wasn’t it around the time you met that you disappeared from being regular here?
Glad things are going so well for you, and congrats on your proposal. Good luck with wedding plans

No need to dodge when you know going in that you intend to be honest and forthright.
You get guarded only when you know you are not on solid ground. Even if you go in with a spirit of honesty, however then get shown you are wrong, your spirit of honesty compels you to admit it and move on. Hence, there's no need to dodge.
