Captain Sir Tom Moore admitted to hospital with Covid.
The 100 year old WW2 veteran, who raised over 33 million to help the NHS fight the coronavirus when the pandemic first started last year, is in hospital suffering from coronavirus.
Sad news.
"Moore became an emblem of hope in the early weeks of the pandemic in April when he walked 100 laps around his garden in England for the National Health Service to coincide with his 100th birthday. Instead of the 1,000 pounds ($1,370) aspiration, he raised around 33 million pounds ($45 million)."

His family have said... “Because of the medication he was taking for his pneumonia he couldn’t have the Covid vaccine."

That makes sense I guess. If he lived in a nursing home he probably would have received it before he caught pneumonia. But since he is a healthy 100 year old he was probably days away from getting the first shot when he caught pneumonia.

I’m a bit puzzled about this, to be frank. He lives only a few villages away from me and the local vaccination programme got off to a very early start - my partner has received BOTH her jabs and I had my first almost a month ago.
Captain Sir Tom lives with his family and had been shielding, so I am wondering whether he picked up the infection during a hospital or GP practice visit for treatment of his pneumonia. Bedford hospital currently has many Covid patients on the wards and as I was there for an out-patient appointment for a diabetes check only a few days ago I can only hope my first jab is giving me at least some protection.
Whatever the circumstances, Tom Moore is now very much a local celebrity and hero and I know everyone in my part of Bedfordshire will be wishing him all the very, very best.

Re: Captain Sir Tom Moore admitted to hospital with Covid.
The problem when an elderly or vulnerable person is shielding yet living with other family members, as Sir Tom is, it's hard for those other family members to keep a safe distance away, especially if the elderly one need some care.
He could have been infected by a family member that's mixing outside of the house...or as you say Fred, he could have caught the virus attending a hospital appointment.

It sounds to.me like he caught it in the hospital. Unless one of his family members have it, which wasn't reported.
At his age I would have thought he would have got the shot a little sooner than a few weeks ago.

Just heard on local radio that he hadn’t been able to have his jab because of the medication he was on.
A truly inspirational man and very much loved and admired locally, God bless him.

Sir Tom holidayed on Barbados with his family in December.
That could be where he caught pneumonia which because he was on meds for that, prevented him having the Covid vaccination.

Re: Captain Sir Tom Moore admitted to hospital with Covid.
RIP.
"The charity fundraiser was taken to Bedford Hospital on Sunday after being treated for pneumonia for some time and testing positive for coronavirus last week.
In a statement, his daughters Hannah and Lucy said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore.
"We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime. We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together.
"The last year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of."

It's sad, but he had a life well lived and he was much loved. I think it's all any of us can ever really hope for.

Re: Captain Sir Tom Moore admitted to hospital with Covid.
His death mirrored my mom's. I'll bet there are thousands out there that have caught Covid in the hospital while battling something else.
Losing people like this is sad, but part of life. The one thing that's not part of life until this damn virus is how people die. Alone, or with a stranger. Being at a loved ones side when they pass, or at least close to when they pass is not something any of us look forward to, but we feel it's our obligation to that person. This virus has taken that from us.
But because I'm an optimist, I'll add that in spite of this damn virus, we are still living longer than our ancestors. And dying "easier" I guess.

It was a sad time for you a few weeks ago, losing your mum and then catching Covid yourself...on the bright side you seemed to get through it quite quickly, age and fitness on your side.
I know only two people who have died from this virus, both, like your mum, admitted to hospital for unrelated conditions, both died in hospital of this bloody plague.
Yes Sir Tom had a full life, maybe if he hadn't had that Christmas holiday he would have lived an extra year or two, but you know....if any of us gets to 100 years old and we have the choice of a holiday in Barbados or another year sat in an arm chair ....

Let’s face it Syl, these keyboard pundits who know bugger all and whose “considered opinions” are worth bugger all would have criticised Jesus Christ for not washing his hands before raising Lazarus of Bethany from the dead.
Sir Tom was a true hero....I am proud to be a veteran like him (though nothing like so worthy of the accolade); I am proud to be a Yorkshireman by birth like him, and I am proud to have been a fairly near neighbour, though sadly I never met him.
When my time comes, in whatever form, I hope that it is peaceful and with my loved ones round me. What more could and old geezer ask?
And the critics can, in the immortal words of the prophet, go fuck themselves.

Yes, I was waiting for someone 'out there' to bring that up.

I was in Bedford hospital on Friday last week for a glaucoma check; believe me, the precautions that they were taking in the building were awesome.
I don’t know what “end of life” arrangements are for families, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that they wouldn’t have been grouped round his bedside, as suggested, let alone not being kitted out like troops on a nuclear or biological battlefield.

Re: Captain Sir Tom Moore admitted to hospital with Covid.
It's a blessing he could die with his close family nearby.
I know it's heartbreaking that some people have been seperated from loved ones at the end, and I dont understand that.
Surely a hospital can take the same precautions they do with their staff, and make it a safe environment for close family to be there.
Bedford hospital did this, and that lovely man hopefully went in peace.

I was told that I could be with my mother (only one of us) if she seemed to be fading and they thought it was the end. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. She was stable and we were planning on transporting her in a few days to a new facility, when she suddenly passed away.
Or she was worse than they let on and they were just giving me lip service to get me off the phone. In all honesty her last doctor at the hospital was pretty much a dick so who knows.

That happened to me when my own mum died, obviously not with covid.
I got an early morning phone call saying my mum hadn't been too good in the night, not to worry, but a dr would visit in the afternoon to check her.
I left the house to go see her 20 minutes later, I was only 10 minutes away and a phonecall came through she had died.
If they had just rung me earlier I could have been there.

Investigated by the Church of England???
Does the Church actually have police power, or is this a figure of speech?

I'm sure the money raised will help medical and nursing staff and patients of all colours so what is this man's problem. Maybe he should quit complaining, step away from his keyboard and do something similar to Capt. Tom and others, of many hues probably.
Has he not noticed that Marcus Rashford has rightly become a person of note in this country and will likely receive more recognition shortly.

The Church of England, like the Roman Catholic Church, Islam or indeed any other established religion, has a perfect entitlement to investigate the alleged misconduct or offensive behaviour of its celebrants and to take disciplinary action if necessary.
This man was both an appointed minister of the Methodist Church and an ordained minister of the Anglican Church, and has at least had the good grace to apologise for the offence that his tweet caused.

A fitting tribute to an amazing man.
"Captain Sir Tom Moore is being laid to rest surrounded by eight members of his family in a "spectacular" but private funeral.
His two daughters, four grandchildren and his sons-in-law walked into the crematorium earlier today behind a coffin draped with a Union Jack flag.
A C-47 Dakota plane from the Second World War soared across the sky overhead before a three-gun salute to the veteran and fundraising hero rang out.
The coffin was carried in by soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment, with relatives walking behind.
The ceremony was then started with Captain Sir Tom's charity single with Michael Ball, 'You'll Never Walk Alone', ringing out."
