There are some fabulous female singers around nowadays.

Just listen to this song...great song, great singer....and she wrote the song herself.
It was used as a Christmas ad for John Lewis, but it's a stand alone great song.

DUA LIPA.
Young model turned singer/songwriter has already been nominated for and won loads of awards.

They both remind me of SADE in different ways.
Amazingly, this song was out 37 years ago.

Jennifer Lopez, still on top, but looking a bit desperate to keep up with the younger girls. This song is all over the radio at the moment.

I don't think there has ever been as many talented women singers as there are nowadays.

Take the 60's, when British pop music was suddenly zoomed in the spotlight thanks mostly to the Beatles.
Male groups were 10 a penny.....girl groups were as rare as hens teeth.
Even now, successful girl bands are a rare, and it takes one to break up before another gains popularity.

Male solo artists have always had more success, going back again to the 60's....we had Dusty (the best female singer for decades) Cilla, Lulu, Sandie Shaw, a couple of others.....and a million solo male singers.
You had Brenda Lee, Carol King.... oh, and a couple of popular female country and western singers.

It's only in the last 20 or so years that female singers have gained power (and success) and managed to break free from male domination .

I think you're ignoring Motown. No doubt female rock singers were scarce.

And I agree that it's more difficult for female singers in general, because most guys aren't into them like they are male singers. And women often like male singers more too.

It's much like sports I guess.

Yeah, there was definately some great female Mowtown singers and groups, The supremes, martha and the Vandellas, further back the Ronettes and the crystals.

One big difference between them and the modern singers was they were all managed and produced by men, whereas todays girls seem to have a lot more control.

Really, all singers were owned by the record producers back then. More so for females of course.

Ronnie isn't really black but "non-white". Her heritage is similar to that of J Lo.

I would say J Lo is Latino, Ronnie Ronette is more African American.

Back in the 60's, things were more straight forwards, rightly or wrongly people were either termed black or white. The girl groups like the Ronettes, Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, they were termed black even if they were of mixed heritage.

I did a little research. I thought she was Puerto Rican.

Lori is not well known, even in the US. She is more of a songwriter and has written a few hits that were performed by others.

I like her stuff because I'm more moved by lyrics than raw talent.

This is the song my daughter and I waltzed (poorly) to at her wedding. The message is a good one which is why I chose it.

Very folksy.

Nah, like I said, her talents are writing. And her music is not very commercial (at least when she sings it), so she's relatively unknown everywhere.

She wrote this song which was a big hit here. Not sure how much of the pop country sound makes it across the pond.

I loved Patsy Clines voice, Crazy, and another of her songs (cant bring it to mind) are still popular on karaoke, not only by the oldies either.

Mary Wilson died today.
Founder and original member of the Supremes, she was overshadowed by Diana Ross, who was designated (by a man obviously) to be lead singer, whilst Mary Wells and Florence Ballard were almost demoted to backing singers.
After the Supremes disbanded Mary went on to have a successful solo and writing career.
Florence Ballard died aged 32 of a heart attack.
