Did Biden win because Trump was so hated?
I said this on another thread, I think Biden is utterly boring, lifeless, lacks animation and looks like he’d turn to dust if a strong wind came along.
I don’t like Trump, like many others here, but did Biden only win because Trump was such a hateful president?
What is your answer to this question?

Yes.
Trump fired up more democrats, independents and even republicans than Biden.
Anyone the Dems nominated would have beaten Trump. They could have nominated a warm bucket of shit and it would have beaten Trump.

Re: Did Biden win because Trump was so hated?
Well, it's a bit like people said after Obama won his first presidential election -- after George W. Bush, an awful lot of Americans were going to vote to punish the Republican Party so long as the Democratic candidate had a pulse. Biden did benefit from simply being on the ballot and having a different name from Trump. And Trump was the worst president America has ever had -- and that's really saying something.
I do hope there's more to Biden than the version we saw defeat Trump. As I said in the other thread, he used to be quite lively and have a rather oversize personality. Whether he toned this down to be the serious, knowlegable alternative to Trump, or if he's just lost it, remains to be seen.

Obama was a rising star, and had "it", what ever that is. Couple that with a financial crisis, and change was inevitable.

Like how Biden inherited the pandemic and recession, and Obama also inherited two wars that never had an exit strategy, and Clinton inherited a recession, and Carter had to follow the president who nearly single-handedly ruined any faith Americans had in the office ... that's why we Democrats like to say our unofficial slogan is, "Cleaning up Republican messes since 1929."

The negative vote is always a consideration. In fact, in Oz you get 2 votes...one for the guy you like, and one for the guy you don't like.

That’s not a yes or no answer.
Closest I could get to a yes or no answer is to say that I think a lot of people probably did vote for Biden because they were disgusted with Trump. There's no easy answer, and to get at the truth you'd have to do a lot more research than I have and talk to millions of people.
To pretend this isn't a complex question and give a simple answer is to bullshit, and I don't want to bullshit.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/
Scroll down and use the graphs that compare Trump to other presidents. His approval ratings are lower than all presidents (even Nixon) with the exception of Carter at the end of his term. I don't think anyone will ever beat Carter, if Trump couldn't. Unless we resurrect Attila the Hun and elect him.
So yeah, Trump was really disliked and anyone could have beaten him.

But for those that want some analysis, way down the page they show that a sizeable percentage of people that voted for Joe were voting against Trump.

Yes.
Biden Isn’t just a lame candidate, he is a terrible one.
Opposes Medicare for all.
Supported the wars.
In Wall Street’s pocket.
Is losing his mind.
Utterly utterly uninspiring.
He didn’t win because he’s a good pick, he’s just better than Trump.

Haha... Very cute. But I know courtroom tactics. An answer is never 'yes/no'. Because a political vote involves a 'mixed motive', so the answer to your question must be 'mixed'.
The answer is: the choice of whom to vote for, is always mixed. First, you're not asking about a single person, but a huge electorate with millions of different mental calculations. Second, even the individual choice is a mixed bag.

Probably.
Wasn't the general opinion 4 years ago that Trump had only won because Hilary was so hated?

Hilary lost because he is female. At no time did she ever do anything illegal. She's just contrary to type in American politics. Any woman is...would you cast a woman in the role of Rhett Butler, in Gone with the Wind?
She, in fact, won by 3-million votes...just not in the electoral college. That was the negative vote toward Trump.

Did she lose because she was female or because she was married to Bill and his reputation rubbed off onto her, plus she stood by him when politically she would probably have gained votes by leaving.
Michelle Obama is female, and she is well regarded by the American population...maybe she should have run instead of Biden.

The cult-of-the-celebrity in politics, has come to a shuddering halt now.
Politics isn't show business, it's more serious than that.
Yes the Kennedy Clan and the glamorous 'Jackie O' and the Reagans provided a bit of Hollywood style razzamatazz but that was a bonus - not a necessity.
After 4 years of watching that vacuous mess swaggering about on the world stage, I'll gladly settle for a quiet understated one now.
Just look how quickly Biden was congratulated by foreign leaders, including CONSERVATIVE ones.
That tells you all you need to know.

No way am I going to get drawn into slagging off Biden at this very early stage.
Not when the twat he replaced is so immeasurably bad.
From January 20 onwards, there will be plenty of time to criticise Biden, if he starts messing up.

Re: Did Biden win because Trump was so hated?
Biden isn't against health care for all, he's against the concept of "Medicare for all" -- at least publicly, that is. Privately, I think the majority of Democratic politicians would love to see the U.S. adopt a state-run health insurance program, probably more similiar to the system of Canada or Australia than the UK, but still health care accessible to everyone regardless of income.
Biden may have opposed Medicare for all for any number of reasons -- I've seen analyses that say it would be very expensive, which should be taken into consideration. Or maybe he's just old and thinks it's too radical a stance to take in order to win election, which is bullshit but that's what happens in politics.
There was a reason that a decade ago, Biden was described by the press as Obama's attack dog and by Obama himself as a "happy warrior" in the sense that he had a natural passion for fighting the good fight.
I don't know if he's lost that or if he suppressed it, and I do hope to see it again.
Yes, I think plenty of Americans voted for him simply because they wanted to see Trump done and gone. But who could blame them?

And I'm talking about whether it's fair that someone's public reputation is based mainly upon lies. I mean, literally millions of Americans enthusiastically embraced the slogan "lock her up" when she's never even been arrested. She's been endlessly slandered and has never sued anyone, either. Unlike the thousands of bullshit lawsuits Trump has filed over his life.
How many times was she investigated by people who unreasonably, viscerally hated her for Benghazi? For Whitewater? How many criminal actions did these endless investigations turn up?
Yes, she stuck by Bill the cheater. I say, it's not my business why she made that decision, which was her decision to make and not mine.
I also say, did she ever fight for poor people to get the health care they needed? Did she ever take action to make sure poor children got fed properly?
Fuck sake but people can latch onto stupid things and miss the big picture.

Do you really think the smartest and most qualified get nominated and elected?

I'm talking in polling. We can argue about why she had such high negatives. The fact that she had them is a matter of statistical record.
Yup. Its weird how a few million Obama voters voted for Trump over Hillary. Might not be fair either.
Not that weird that a few tens of thousands (not millions) of Obama voters would vote for a guy who made a promise he should have known he couldn't keep -- that he was going to bring back all the manufacturing jobs lost to China and revitalise the Rust Belt.
Especially when that false promise came from a guy who's built a false reputation on the falsehood that he's a masterful businessman, rather than a guy who used his father's name and fortune to rise to mediocrity (at best) in business and who found most of his success in starring on a reality television show.

She threw Bill's lovers under the bus when the facts came out. She worked to destroy other women and most women think that's a shitty thing to do.
Well, that’s a very shitty and cowardly thing to do. I have lost even more respect for her now. Blaming the other women? So very sad.
Glad she didn’t make President actually. Stupid bitch.
She didn't blame them. She tried to destroy their reputations to further Bill's career. She started that way back in Arkansas. That's why women had issues with her. Like most politicians she was power hungry, but she crossed the line hurting other women to defend her husband.

Both of those guys were elected president. And he was talking some weird shit about how their voices sounded. Like their voices changed after their first election victory.

“Didn’t blame them but tried to destroy their reputations” is just about the same thing as blaming them.
She’s still a fucking dangerous idiot.

Most people are well into retirement at that age.

I can understand what Hillary Clinton did, though I don't condone it of course. I can't understand what Trump did when he ran the Miss Universe contest, other than to think that he's a pervert who got his jollies from walking unannounced into the dressing room of a bunch of teenage girls while they were changing.
Personal conduct aside, I don't know about anybody else, but I'm under no illusion that I'm nominating anybody for sainthood when I cast my vote for president. I choose who I'm voting for by judging whether I think the candidate's policy positions would help their country and whether I think they're capable of being a good leader.
Hillary Clinton's policy positions were obviously much more palatable to me than Trump's, and she's obviously a much better leader than Trump could ever dream of being.
I mean, this guy tried to get his supporters to overthrow the Constitution in service of his ego, and only backed away when someone smarter than him whispered in his ear that he might end up in prison for doing that.
Someone who can only be swayed from their preferred course of action by the prospect of getting butt-raped doesn't get my respect or my vote.

Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and George W. Bush were all in their 40s or 50s when they became president. It's only recently that no younger candidate has been able to elevate his or her star enough to have the name-recognition needed to win the presidency.`

I dont know how/if she acted badly to the women her husband was messing around with, I can only remember that Lewinsky girl.eddie wrote:Maddog wrote:

But....I have never understood women who blame other women when their men are unfaithful.....blame HIM for Gods sake, he is the one who hurt you, no one else.
