Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
More than 200 illegal immigrants have crossed the English Channel in 20 boats according to the Home Office - a record number for a single day.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-53600477
Why are they not being returned to France?
We should not be wasting taxpayers money on keeping any of them here!

Must be some reason having to do with legal status. Ask your Tory MP.

Isn't it the boat journeys themselves that are illegal, and not the migrants? It just seems that the government can have no way of knowing the migrants' legal status before they've even landed.
Re: Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
Is the presumption that without the authorities getting involved, these people will all simply try to slip into British society? Just curious.

Yes that’s why they’re coming by boat. They know they won’t be sent home as the UK won’t pay to fly them home and we won’t treat them like the French by telling them to sleep on the streets - we will house and feed them.
I’m not saying it’s right or we should deny genuine people, I’m just answering your question.

I've seen lots of homeless sleeping in the gutters of Soho...so, apparently not all of them are housed and fed.

A lot of homeless people on the streets are born and bred here, some are ex military.Original Quill wrote:I've seen lots of homeless sleeping in the gutters of Soho...so, apparently not all of them are housed and fed.

And another 96 the next day...
https://news.sky.com/story/migrant-crossings-unacceptably-high-as-uk-asks-france-to-be-tougher-12040496
There has been about 3500 this year so far... Costing us around £50 million a year...
The EU is allowing them to cross over numerous safe countries in Europe, as they don't have any border checks between countries there... So they should be removed back to the EU to deal with...

Re: Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
There has been hundreds more every day over the last 7 days...
Why don't we just incorporate a new line in the law here in UK... Whereby it states that "if a person has illegally entered the UK and then tried to make an asylum claim here, but has arrived here via another safe country where they could have already made a claim for asylum, then their asylum claim here is automatically rejected and they will be immediately returned to either their most recent known country of origin, or their original country of origin, or to their regional group of nations, ie the Arab League or African Union etc.."
???
For as far as I can tell... None of the countries in EU really do anything to stop any of these people crossing into their countries because they know that they are planning on only passing through on their way to try to get to UK...
Cos EU has Schengen agreement which means complete open borders throughout all continental EU nations, and illegal immigrants can travel across anywhere they like around EU with no border controls throughout!!!
Maybe if these EU countries start to realise that we will be sending these illegal immigrants back to them, then they will start doing more to stop them getting so far across their own countries and maybe even secure their own external borders to the countries of origin!!!

Why can't they be taken care of properly? If they are truly ex-military, they should have a bunk anywhere there is a base.

Maybe they don't want to be taken care of. I should imagine seeing some of the things they have seen would be enough to de-socialise many.

Yet, there's such a thing as 'no strings attached'. They have to sleep. They presently sleep in a gutter in Soho, which is an accommodation of sorts, given to them free by the city. Why not offer them a bed indoors, come and go as they like, no questions--no talking, if that suits them?
It would be free, just like the gutter, only a bit warmer and more comfortable.

Re: Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, pledged last winter to provide a bed a night for all rough sleepers in GM. He announced that beds were available, but some just refused to accept them, prefering to live on the streets.
There are different reasons people, including ex military are homeless, not one size fits all.

At least the option was made available.

Yes, but that was just in greater Manchester, other places haven't had this scheme, and homlessness is on the increase,

We have our own homeless people who we can't house... But illegal immigrants get given housing and handouts straight away...!

Re: Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
While New York City and Los Angeles have the highest numbers of homeless people in the US, San Francisco has the highest rate of street homelessness nationwide. On any given night, more than 4,300 citizens sleep without a roof over their heads.
But not even this knowledge could prepare Farha for what she witnessed in January.
In the city's core, homeless residents were denied basic access to water, toilets, and sanitation facilities. There were piles of trash and scattered feces on the ground. In the neighboring camps in Oakland, rats dug through the mud and families huddled outside in the cold. The experience, she said, shook her to her core.
"The idea that a government would deny people those services ... when they have nowhere else to go suggests a kind of cruelty that is unsurpassed," Farha told Business Insider. "It's an attempt to erase people. Worse than erase — I can only use the word annihilate. It is a denial of someone's humanity."

A resident of San Francisco should be very familiar with the homeless problem. Many parts of that city look worse than the third world.

Re: Illegal immigrant numbers crossing English channel in small boats is at record high
It is a shame. San Francisco is the financial center of the west coast. It is second only in wealth to the tri-state area around New York City. As such, it is very expensive to live in San Francisco. In addition, it is among the top 10 most beautiful cities in the world. https://www.insider.com/most-beautiful-cities-in-the-world#8-san-francisco-california-43
But the city/county of San Francisco is the bare tip of a peninsula, being one prong of the enclosure that is the San Francisco Bay. It is landlocked on three sides by water, and choked off by the political border (and even more expensive neighborhoods) to the south.
Now, financially you can dissuade people from crowding into a city through rents, but the homeless do not pay rent. To make matters worse, the City of San Francisco is among the most generous of cities when it comes to helping the homeless. It even provides kiosks for the homeless to take showers, etc., making it even more attractive to the homeless (and, indeed, backpacking European tourists--lol).
A city that is so beautiful, and friendly to street people as well, is an attractor for the homeless. The only way to lower the attraction factor is to treat the homeless poorly. That is not in the heart and soul of San Franciscans. Hence, we have the contradiction that the most attractive City, populated by the most kind and generous in offering services, simply cannot keep up.
It’s an abundance of riches, but would you consign the homeless to lesser communities…say, for example, in the south, where they would be beaten out of town (or worse if they are black) by the police, or made sport of by white supremacist drunkards and their beloved guns?

Nonsense. San Francisco has dozens of janitorial teams keeping the City and those kiosks spic and span.
Oakland is not part of the City, but it too is clean and a delight to walk downtown, around Lake Merritt, or in such as areas like Piedmont, Montclair and the island community of Alameda. My father taught me to sail on Lake Merritt. My sister and brother-in-law keep their sailboat moored at Encinal Yacht Club, adjacent to Oakland.
The Bay Area is known for Silicon Valley, headquarters of most computer and programming development/activities in the world, two of the three best universities in the nation, and advanced research in rocketry, chemistry, medicine and bio-science. It is all clean industry, providing the highest paying jobs in the world.
What Business Insider—a publication described as having a clickbait style, and known for its “deceptive, typically sensationalized and misleading” quality, mind you—has done is to take all of the expense and work of having a beautiful and attractive region like the Bay Area, and focused on the downside of such extreme popularity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Insider If San Francisco is attractive and provides services that are top shelf, but expensive to keep up, is that better or worse than a drab city in the south, known for its racism, incivility and gun-toting?
It's a privilege to live in civilized San Francisco, and if it is expensive to keep up...so be it.
