Protests show 'two Americas' — those who lost their jobs and those still getting paid
The divide is best summed up in a tweet by Brian Stelter of CNN, and a response. Stelter tweeted: “I crawled in bed and cried for our pre-pandemic lives. Tears that had been waiting a month to escape. I wanted to share because it feels free to do so. Now is not a time for faux-invincibility. Journos are living this, hating this, like everyone else.”
Some people mocked this as unmanly — and in fact, it’s hard to imagine hearing this from, say, a British journalist during The Blitz — but one response cut deep: “Such bravery. Let's all take a moment to think about the journos working from home while millions have lost their jobs.”
Likewise, in Los Angeles — where less than half the county is working now — radio journalist Steve Gregory asked the L.A. County Board of Supervisors whether any of them were willing to take voluntary pay cuts during this crisis. He was told by the chair that his question was “irresponsible,” which is to say embarrassing and inconvenient. (By contrast, New Zealand’s senior officials, including the prime Minister, are taking a 20% pay cut.)
There really are two Americas here: Those still getting a paycheck from government, corporations or universities, and those who are unemployed, or seeing their small businesses suffer due to shutdowns. And the America still getting paid is, so far, not showing a whole lot of sympathy for the America that isn’t.
It’s no surprise that a major center of resistance to the shutdown has emerged in Michigan, whose Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has shown all the sensitivity of an angry third-grade teacher in administering a shutdown regime that often makes no sense — banning sales of seeds in stores that are open for other purposes, or allowing sailboating but banning powerboating. Her response to the protests, a threat to extend shutdowns further, seems calculated to inflame things further.

Take it like fookin' man, Redneck. Stop whining. Figger it out, Charlie. Ya band together you can make it through. It's called socialism.
It's called socialism because it takes a social course of action, dumbass. We've gotta act together in order to defeat something that has taken siege of our existence. Yes, it has taken control of our bodies, and you can't do a fookin' thing. Face reality, ya dumbass.
It takes a social organ to combat a thing that attacks us socially.

XXXXXXXXXX Maddog simply can't handle the truth...
This subject was already covered in another thread two days ago..
Fatdog, however needed this idiotic revisioning today, to put his alternative "libertarian" spin on the Trump disaster unfolding in Ahmerika.
Amerika's chronic lack of effective public health, welfare and edukashun systems has put it where it is today -- And Trump/Repug'/"free market" policies have delivered what ww have seen this week..
Tea Party funded redneck terrorists and 'evangelical' flat earthers congregating with their AR-15s and "Trump-Pence" placards congregating in front of gov't offices and hospitals, demanding their "God-given right" to infect whoever they like with CoVid-19.
Instead of simply standing there and watching them, those spineless and gormless police officers should have shot any protestor carrying a gun, holding a Trump placard and/or covering their faces; and an extra bullet to the brain for those fuckers seen openly harassing and attacking health workers..
I have warned you, BEN has warned you, what more does it take ?????
If you persist in phrasing your posts in such continuously antagonistic terms (and then of course crying like a baby when it comes home to roost) I WILL take further action....consider this a final warning. MOD VICTOR

Re: Protests show 'two Americas' — those who lost their jobs and those still getting paid
Since my Facebook page has far better humans than what floats around here at times, I'll post a response for this topic from a nurse friend of mine.
Elevate the discourse if you will.
"I don’t think it’s a fair statement to say “And the America still getting paid is, so far, not showing a whole lot of sympathy for the America that isn’t.” I’m still getting paid because I’m treating patients every shift. I also understand how fortunate my family has it right now. My kids still have two working parents. However, that doesn’t come without the risk of losing one or both parents. Listening to some of these protestors scream in the faces of nurses “fake nurse!” “People die every day!” “You must not be working very hard” doesn’t sound sympathetic from those outraged because they’re out of work to me. I also understand that when people lose money, it causes stress. Stress causes anger and causes people to behave irrationally. I think all sides could stand to have a little more sympathy for one another. My heart breaks for the patients family that said goodbye to their dad via an iPad as we stopped chest compressions. My heart also breaks for friends that have worked their entire lives to build businesses that may never recover. It breaks for kids who have no other escape and are at home with stressed abusive parents. It’s ALL sad. It’s ALL difficult and there isn’t a one size fits all answer that fixes everything."

One more from nurse friend. Maybe some class will wear off on some folks.
"Correct. A lot of their facts are without base, but I 100% understand their concerns and believe they are valid. The point is this is America and that means we have certain freedoms here which include the right to make stupid decisions. Yes we want to protect others and keep everyone safe. This is a new thing though and we need to figure out to what degree government involvement is necessary yet still protects the rights of individuals......you also bring up another good point. Their default position is belittling the other’s perspective. Well if that isn’t the America we all know and love smh. Look at how our politicians behave! Look at how we treat one another as keyboard soldiers on social media. Discussion of problems, debating appropriate solutions? A thing of the past. Now it’s all.....I’m right. You’re wrong. If I can’t prove it, it’s ad hominem from there."

I don't ever respond to the guy, so this can't be in self defense.
Would someone like to point out where I have called Wolfie a name to warrant this?

Re: Protests show 'two Americas' — those who lost their jobs and those still getting paid
"To sum up each side in the language of their angriest opponents: The "Closers" want to demolish nearly all Americans' ability to live, and destroy nearly all the wealth our society has built up over decades, by halting the wheels of most commerce for the forseeable future. And the "Openers" are so dedicated to keeping GDP growing and so ignorant of science they want to see hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Americans die of a hideous disease because they don't understand how contagion works.
Both Closers and Openers, though, have a combination of reasons, theories, guesses, and value judgments of a sort many sane people have always made, that make their respective positions make sense to them. Neither side should be blithely written off as either idiotic or sinister or not thinking, in their own way, of human well-being."

Re: Protests show 'two Americas' — those who lost their jobs and those still getting paid
What does that have to reality? The economy is shut down because people die if they don't go home and lay low.
As a result, they don't get paid, and the economy collapses. What part of this equation don't you understand?
This is the result of anti-regulation. Deregulation of health measures, lead to such a pandemic, and the lack of preparedness is the result of ignoring the problem.
So we have no tests, we have no n95 masks, we have no PPE gowns, we have no ventilators and we are caught with our balls hanging out and nothing to say.
We have an administration that has failed in totality. What will be done? Probably nothing, because the Democratic Party is a bunch of snowflakes. We need to start a resurgence of the Progressive Party, with jailing of the Russo-Republicans.

More from my nursing contingent that communicates with me all of the time.
"Kinda on the fence. As far as spread increasing, it will and then hopefully peak soon. I think it will be ok here in Fort Worth area. Our hospitals are far from full. We are getting floated everywhere bc our census is low. We are equipped with supplies. We have staff. And they aren’t opening everything right away so my hope is that it won’t be a big deal. My favorite Infectious Disease Dr and I were talking about it this morning. He thinks we will be ok here. So, I have hope. There are so many people hurting bc many are not equipped to go months without income. So, it’s way more than just the illness."
and....
"I think the social distancing has worked for the most part here. I have been busy but not overwhelmingly so. We have a surge plan for if/when things get bad. I think we got this though. Allowing people to get back to work SLOWLY and reopen things a bit at a time is a good thing. We can monitor increases in spread with each phase. It’s possible that we will see a surge in cases once things start to open back up if we swarm places and aren’t smart about it. We shall see. Either way, ya girl will be here."

Here in UK we have 4 groups... The ones who still have to go to work for their money and risk the exposure to this virus every day, who are just getting on with it... The ones who are working from home and getting paid their regular money for doing so... The ones who are being paid up to £2,500 a month by the tax payer to sit at home doing nothing... And those who have seen their work dry up and are being told to stay indoors while getting paid nothing from anyone...

Although I have managed to get a couple of days work in a hospital... and I've had to do it just to get a little bit of money... but that is nothing compared to what I need financially to live on and pay for everything...

Oh and some small businesses may be able to get some support in the form of loans, grants and/or tax relief... But I don't think I qualify for any of that because it only covers small business with a rateable value up to about £50,000...
I don't have any premises...

Thankfully banking and real estate is essential here. I'm just rolling along.
But there are folks here that will lose everything.
Worse yet, the folks that claim to care about people don't seem too concerned.

I am so proud of Lauren. She had a lot more restraint than I would have. She’s also very brave to be around those crackpots. I thought Trump supporters didn’t like protests? Fuc**ing hypocrites as usual.
