USA TODAY•January 26, 2020
Five people were killed when a helicopter slammed into a hillside near Malibu in Los Angeles County, authorities said. [Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant was among the dead.]
The county Sheriff's Department said there were no survivors and that the investigation was continuing.
The crash took place in Calabasas, a city of about 25,000 people in the Santa Monica Mountains about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. [Calabasas is popularly known as the community in which the residence of Kim Kardashian is situated.] Art Marrujo, a dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said firefighters quickly doused a blaze that raced through about an acre of brush.
There were no homes in the area, and no roadways were impacted by the crash that took place in foggy conditions, the Los Angeles Times reported.

I'm not 100 percent sure this is real but if it is, this is worse than I expected. I was under the impression they slammed into a mountain in fog. Those poor people especially those two 13 year old girls went through hell for the last moments of their lives.

After the passing of some time, I don't think it's the actual video, but it's still depressing to watch because the bystanders know they just watched people die.

No matter. It has a gate...if you don't have permission, you can't view it.eddie wrote:I was about to watch that video then decided I didn’t want to depress myself at work.

Three girls died. I was never a Kobe fan, but it's still a terrible loss because he was someone's husband an father. But when kids die it bother's me more than adults, even if those adults are well known.

Yeah, after reading more reports, this video is bogus. If it's any consolation, they probably heard the alarms for low altitude go off, the pilot try to gain altitude, and then impacted that mountain at such a speed that it was over in an instant.
For some reason the pilot was flying low and about 200 mph, through the fog.

Apparently, the specific helicopter didn't have a ground-proximity warning system. Also, auguring against an accidental terrain collision, the helicopter made a full throttle bee-line for the ground for the last 2,000-feet.
More likely, the dense fog disoriented the pilot so that he didn't know 'up' from 'down', and intentionally, if unwittingly, dove into the ground.

Basketball isn't big in Britain, I did not know of him, tho I may have heard the name in passing, a couple of times.
People almost everywhere on the planet were pouring out tributes to him.
The closest I have seen to a person who touched so many hearts on such a GLOBAL scale was our own Princess Diana.
Tennis star, Djokovic wept like a baby.
Clearly Kobe Bryant was a good man.

By all accounts he was a great man and father at the time of his death.
Almost 20 years ago He was charged with rape and settled out of court by making an apology and writing a large check to the 19 year old girl who pressed charges.
A player facing the same charges now, might well never play again.

Re: Kobe Bryant killed in helicopter crash
OK I went and looked it up. The guy said it was consensual.
Yeah yeah I know …. an accused man would say that anyway, even if guilty.
But an innocent man who genuinely believed it was consensual would also say it of course.
The woman decided to drop the charges and take the money instead.
She'd still have got the money IF she had won the case but clearly she decided not to take the risk of losing the case, and getting no cheque.
I'm glad he went flat out for total closure, he even had the sense to apologise knowing full well that an apology would work against him.
If half the planet is paying tributes to someone, he must have done something right in his life.
