Welcome to TWENTY TWENTY
No, this thread isn't premature. This is a global forum so there are bound to be people browsing it from areas where it's already 2020. Amirite?
The name has always sounded so futuristic, I cannot believe it's actually here. Awesome!!

Ah ok!
A brand new decade eh? Exciting!
Tho nothing could ever beat the thrill 20 years ago, of welcoming a new year, decade, century & millennium simultaneously. Awesome for kids who were born at that very moment too.
This might sound frivolous but I'm glad that we've now got a proper descriptive name for the decade at long last. It has always felt odd and confusing saying "this decade is the noughties / teens" . And writing it as the 00's or the 10's was strange too. From now on we can say ''hey this decade is the 20's/30's/40's ...etc ". Much clearer

Hahaha You seem to know American politics inside out! A font of knowledge.
A very happy new year in advance to you, Lurker.
(Oh & btw I know that some people don't really see 2020 as the start of a new decade ...... but rather, as the end of the current one - depends on how you count it, innit? Whatever lol! )

I wonder how future generations will remember this coming decade, in 100 years time!
Wonderful to think there are a few people (like eg Kirk Douglas, I cannot think of any other famous long-lived folk) - who were actually alive when these iconic pics were taken in the previous 20's.

Yes, I've made it back to my real home -- starting back in October, Texas became my home away from home. Great to be here for this. Even if I feel like I'm coming down with something ...

Speaking of 2020, it struck me the other day that if my stepdaughter lives to age 89, which isn't unreasonable seeing as she's a skinny vegetarian, she will see the next turn of the century, in 2100.
Blows my mind.

We haven’t got the visa yet. Still working towards it. Ben will have to return to Texas to apply.

Hello 2020...
And only another 12 months to the proper and genuine end of the 2nd 'decade' of the 21st century..
And the beginning of the actual "third decade".

I gave you a greenie for this post, Wolfie and I've already referenced that very point, upthread. The reason for the anomaly is simply the optics. Seeing the 19 change to 20 makes some people feel a brand new decade is starting. People had this very same argument 20 years ago when 1999 became 2000. Optics!
Hope 2020 finds you in good cheer & good health, everyone.
@ Fred, you tough ol' trouper, thank you - stay safe & well. x

Re: Welcome to TWENTY TWENTY
'Speech impediment'? It's not so bad, Lurker. Maybe it's due to dentures. Eww.
In the old days we had a tennis commentator who made accidental whistling noises thru his dentalwork, very annoying. We also had Frank Muir - now long dead. We still have Wossie (Jonathan Ross).
Moving on ........ I sooo love this. It's an optical illusion so you either get it or you don't. It keeps changing!!!
Best e-greeting card I've seen in a while …. makes a change from the usual bright flashing gifs.

I'd like to start more threads that get people thinking, get people into a creative mood, and also avoid the petty political threads I've indulged in in the past. One lesson from the second half of the 2010s is that politics is important and should be taken seriously.

So perhaps we should all try to avoid turning every thread into a political “I’m right!” thread?

What's with the sarcasm, Eddie? Is posting a happy new year thread a crime now?eddie wrote:It’s a new year? Anyone gonna post anything different? Try a new approach?
This one was the first happy new year thread posted on here.
Another one was posted AFTER this one.

Re: Welcome to TWENTY TWENTY
This thread DID have a new approach/twist coming. It wasn't just to wish people a H/N/Y. I was also planning to mention all the noteworthy global historical events, plus the top obituaries, plus all the iconic stores we lost in the past decade.eddie wrote:It’s a new year? Try a new approach?
And that could have triggered some good conversations especially from sporting types like Quill & Fred.

It's very quiet on forums just now, edds, so don't expect much.
That's the real issue here.
Maybe things will pick up in a few days.

Yeah, Jules, but NYD is also about trying something new, and I think that's what eddie was driving at.
It's a great time to say, "Know what? I've been stuck in a rut and my strategies aren't working, so maybe it's time to take a fresh approach."

The only thing that's worse than being stuck in a rut ..... is being stuck in quicksand. And IMO that's where most forums are. Beware the difference.
Are people migrating from forums to SM? I dunno. I'm no expert, i can only offer my opinion like everyone else.

That’s my point. Everyone seems stuck in a rut, whether on forums or social media.

I disagree, Wolfie. All threads die a death eventually. So why bother to merge old threads that are about to die anyway?
Like I said, this one was originally meant to chat a bit about landmark events from the past 12 months - but I won't bother now, as I'm over it.
We will still have two 2020 threads left over that will need revisiting throughout the coming year ie the two prediction/prophecy threads. To see if the predictions/prophecies were accurate. So it's all good.
