Measles surge is killing thousands worldwide as plummeting vaccine rates lead to an 'alarming upsurge'
Measles is staging a devastating comeback that is killing thousands of children around the globe, the World Health Organisation warned yesterday. Plummeting vaccination rates have led to an ‘alarming upsurge in measles cases in all regions’, including the UK, experts said.
There were 364,808 cases of measles reported to the WHO in the first six months of this year – triple the amount in 2018 and the highest level since 2006. Several countries are currently battling deadly outbreaks, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where 4,000 people have died of measles already this year. Yesterday Dr Kate O’Brien, director of the WHO’s department of immunisation, said ‘critical gaps’ in coverage are causing ‘widespread loss of life and disability’.
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Dr O’Brien said the UK was an example of a high-income country where falling vaccine coverage is particularly concerning.

While I understand this disease can be lethal and otherwise cause life changing health problems for some and it is best that it is eradicated, whole generations have come through this, the wording in the article makes it sound like Ebola. While in school health officials and parents didn't advocate keeping children home when it broke out in school, it was thought best for everyone to be exposed (crazy really). We all had measles, chickenpox and rubella while in primary school and thought no more of it, I doubt we heard of fatalities and all the other health problems it caused though.

Even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available, in 2017, there were 110 000 measles deaths globally, mostly among children under the age of five.
Measles vaccination resulted in a 80% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2017 worldwide.
In 2017, about 85% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – up from 72% in 2000.
During 2000-2017, measles vaccination prevented an estimated 21.1 million deaths making measles vaccine one of the best buys in public health.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I think someone is over-egging the pudding.
“Numbers of measles cases are currently high in several European countries. There were over 82,500 measles cases in Europe in 2018 . This is more than three times as many as in 2017, and 15 times as many as in 2016. In 2016 and 2017 there were 49 deaths from measles in Europe, and 2018 saw another 72 deaths.”
And who knows why? It could’ve been people with other underlying health issues. It is not the deadly disease the media would have you believe.

“About one child out of every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain) that can lead to convulsions and can leave the child deaf or with intellectual disability. For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it.“

And the above is the kind of stupidity that is causing an increase gloablly in children getting measels. Placing faith in that children do not die from this, is playing with childrens lives and is utterly irresponsible. Your unmedically trained mind making views on this is what is dangeroeus. Its so bad your views that lead others to think its okay to not vaccinate their children.
110,000 diead from this in 2017, many children and you claim its okay to not worry ourselves with this?
Sometimes Eddie you come out with some of the biggest load of nonsense
neither you and Vintage are medically trained, so why not listen to the experts. They know what are the risks here, not you

Re: Measles surge is killing thousands worldwide as plummeting vaccine rates lead to an 'alarming upsurge'
School gates can be a “breeding ground for harmful myths” about vaccines, the chief executive of NHS England has said, as he called for a zero-tolerance approach to misinformation about their alleged dangers.
Simon Stevens said it was often the parents who did their best to find out more about the impact and effect of vaccines on their children who were liable to be deceived by “fake news”.
“In this way the school gates themselves can be a breeding ground for harmful myths to catch on, spread and ultimately infect parents’ judgment,” he wrote in the Daily Mail.
“That parents’ efforts and anxiety to make the right decision for their children are jeopardised by wilful misinformation is unacceptable.”
Stevens backed efforts by internet companies to prioritise information about the safety of vaccines and their usefulness, and to censor information about alleged risks.
“With parents often taking their cue from other mums and dads, there must be a zero-tolerance approach to misinformation, while the government’s strategy on improving vaccination levels will help to drive action,” he said.
Last month, experts expressed alarm at the drop in take-up of routine childhood vaccinations across England.
The UK recently lost its measles-free status because of the fall in rates of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) immunisation. But recently published figures also showed a more widespread loss of confidence in vaccinations.
At the ages of 12 months, 24 months and five years, there had been a marked decline in vaccination rates against 13 different diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), diphtheria and meningitis.
Confidence in the MMR jab appeared to have been dropping at least partly in response to social media misinformation and scare stories. The discredited claims of Andrew Wakefield, who theorised in 1998 that the immunisation was linked to autism, continue to be widely circulated.

Re: Measles surge is killing thousands worldwide as plummeting vaccine rates lead to an 'alarming upsurge'
Hang on one minute, I never claimed to be medically trained and I would never suggest any child should not be vaccinated. Mine certainly were. I am only saying how it was for me and my generation, other people on other forums talking about this have similar experiences in other countries.
It would be a weird forum if everyone agreed on every facet or wasn't allowed to ask questions or give an account of their experience or even an opinion, however unqualified.
Interestingly, in the UK between 1956 and 1988 (before vaccinations became available) there was a drastic drop in the number of deaths from complications with measles from generally hundreds to less than 50 and sometimes less than 20, a couple of years saw a rise in numbers but no where near the numbers of decades before the 1950's.
One of the things thought to account from that was that the standards of living were improving and on the whole the general health of the population was better.

I never said you suggested kids should not be vaccinated. What I went off is the view you both have to think how was once the thought when you were younger. Yes many of you survived getting many of these diseases, with again no doubt improvments in living standards. To go off this, still ignores the fact that children were dying and are still dying today in huge numbers. When we can present this then to go off the past how kids caught the disease and survived Vintage can as seen lead to people thinking its okay to catch this. As its a killer disease. It then leads to people mistakenly believing and ignoring the risks. Yes I know this is not your intent, but for as usual Eddie to downplay this is to me irresponsible. As the more this catches on that people stop vaccinating their children. Then the risks increase of more children dying
Even the workd health organisation is warning about this Vintage

Re: Measles surge is killing thousands worldwide as plummeting vaccine rates lead to an 'alarming upsurge'
So if its so deadly why wasn't it taken more seriously previously?
It's not the measles that kill the person its complications.
In the UK
2014 - 1,850 cases 0 deaths
2015 - 1,193 cases 0 deaths
2016 - 1,641 cases 1 death infant
2017 - 1,693, cases 1 adult death late onset measles

And at what costs to the NHS has this all been and prevenatble?
i death is 1 death too many
How many have had life time damaging effects also from contracting the disease.
Like I said parents that spread anti-vaxxing crap are irresponsible parents period
The problem today is people have access to other idiots spreading lies and by into these lies and these people are placing the lives of children at risk. The way things are going, expect to see the death toll rise and the cost for this rise also in the uk

Of course one death is one too many, even before vaccination the death toll was dropping drastically.
The deaths are in Africa fell by 91% in 2007 according to the W.H.O. from 360,000 to 36,000 still far too many of course.
There are 4,500 deaths in the US from complications of the common cold, ok we haven't got a vaccine for that yet. Should every child be vaccinated - yes, should you make it illegal not to have your child vaccinated - probably.
If your child is vaccinated he/she will be ok even if an unvaccinated child in their school gets measles, the parents of the child unvaccinated have only themselves to blame if the child suffers complications.

Not every child can be vaccinated as some suffer from immunodeficiency diseases. Which is why its even more important for there to be as many others vaccinated for herd protection,. Even more for the very few children that cannot be vaccinated. Being as they are even at greater risk of complications. So its not just parents being irresponsible towards their own children by not vaccinating them. Its placing other children at risk, who cannot get vaccinated who are as i say at more risk. By having high levels of herd protection. Is going to prevent any measels outbreaks. Yet now we are seeing many outbreaks. All die to the drop in vaccinations. So when we have vaccinations that can prevent such diseases. Even more so when measles can also cause life changing complications. Its important that society as a whole safguards all children and people from contracting such diseases. Through herd protection

Indeed 48,000 hospitalisations and at what costs to the health system and beds needed for other patients?
21 million preventble deaths globally in 20 years
There is only one way to look at this
Its a no brainer to vaccinate
So lets here your other way to look at this, because I am dying to hear your idea her to ensure more costs, more deaths and more life changing problems for more children?
