New Corbyn heir lined up as party fears loss of 100 seats in election
The firebrand left-winger Laura Pidcock has overtaken Rebecca Long-Bailey as the heir apparent to Jeremy Corbyn, as the race to succeed him exploded amid the failed coup to oust Tom Watson.
According to party insiders, Pidcock was given half of Long-Bailey’s business portfolio when she became shadow minister for labour last year, in what has been interpreted as a vote of confidence by the Labour leader in the newcomer.
At the height of Corbyn’s popularity, his left-wing allies would not have countenanced a time when someone else might lead the Labour Party.
However, amid claims by some of Corbyn’s closest allies that he has discussed stepping down, the power struggle within the party has escalated dramatically in recent days.

Unless Labour can come up with a leadership candidate of the caliber of Keir Starmer or Dan Jarvis (I can't believe that I am saying this!!!!!!), they are toast...and rightly so.

Agreed. They simple do not care though Fred. The hard left now has the majority membership and live in cloud cuckoo land.
Its why Labour its scared to back a call for an exlection. They are trying to buy time in the hope public opinion can be swayed. Which is unlikely being as they will have lost ,much of their Midland and Northern support. As I say they are out of touch with the working class.

Don't write off the moderate wing of the Labour Party yet. McDonnell's forthcoming Labour manifesto economic plan will prove to be an even longer suicide note than Michael Foot's notorious manifesto way back in the 1980's. That was so extreme that it led to Margaret Thatcher's victory and Labour being unelectable for years.....

Unless the party splits Fred, I cannot see how the moderates can gain back control. Momentum pulled off a bloodless form of the "Night of the long knives" and are still doing so within Labour. Through a majority membership.
You are so on the money about the nightmare polices Fred.

It will split...it's just a matter of time. So will the Tories. We are heading for years of coalition minority governments - which may, or may not -be a good thing.

Indeed Fred, but does this mean the Liberals can then capitalise from this?

Of course. I don't think they would ever be able to form a majority government, but it's highly likely they would relish the role of a sort of legislative kingmaker in spite of the failure of their most recent coalition with the Tories.
I believe that the real elephant in the room, however, is the SNP. Any political alliance or even co-operation on enacting key legislation - such as a future Queen's Speech or budget - that they might offer will inevitably depend on a guarantee of an unfettered repeat referendum on independence. McDonnell has already opened the door on this in a bid to secure their backing.

Half of labour voters will never vote for them again, after their appalling betrayal over brexit...!!!
Even many sensible remain voters are pissed off with all the weaseling by remain MPs over their anti democratic Shenanigans in trying to stop brexit, after they were voted in on their promises to deliver brexit...!!!

.
I don't know if Brexit issues alone would be enough to lose "half" their voters, Tommy -- but when you add in their hard turn to the far left in more recent years, and increasing antisemitism in some factions, you may well be on the money...
If they get a good drubbing in the next election, you may well see them splitting, like Dodge and Freddie suggested -- maybe into a far-left "comrades" Socialist Workers party model, and a more moderate 'centrist' 'New Labour Party' (more like the Oz and NZ parties..) ?
