UK Government: Those in civil partnerships will be able to convert to marriages by end of year
Equalities Minister Helen Grant has confirmed that same-sex couples who are in civil partnerships in England and Wales will be able to convert them to marriages by the end of 2014.
Mrs Grant made the remarks on Tuesday morning in front of a House of Commons committee that is looking at implementation of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act.
The committee, made up of pro and anti-equal marriage MPs, has been debating a final set of technical measures, such as the registration of same-sex marriages in shared religious premises, and other changes to existing legislation as a result of the law.
Amendments passed this morning included the recognition of same-sex marriages registered overseas and changes to occupational pension schemes regarding terminology – not addressing the existing imbalance in civil partnership contributions.
Regulations governing the registration of same-sex marriages in shared religious premises were also passed.
Mrs Grant stressed that ceremonies could only take place if permission was granted from all faith groups involved
During proceedings Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh – a key opponent of equal marriage and LGBT rights in general – claimed that every marriage was now being redefined.
He said: “Same-sex marriage is not traditional marriage”.
Tory MP Tim Loughton also complained about the lack of consultation over the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act.
The former children’s minister has been a long-term critic of the reform.
In December last year, Mr Loughton described the government’s handling of the policy as “rather crass and clumsily” executed.
Mr Loughton was among 128 Conservative MPs to vote against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act at third reading in May 2013.
The UK Government launched a consultation into the future of civil partnerships last month.
The first same-sex marriages in England and Wales will take place on Saturday 29 March.

Great news for common decency
I'd love to know how Mr Leigh sees his own marriage as being redefined? Does he now feel less married? Does he feel dirty sleeping with his wife now? It is pure sour grapes from people who are upset they didn't get maintain the idea their relationship is somehow better than someone else is- perhaps they feel as such because they DON'T feel as much of a connection with their own partner as they'd like... who knows; I guess unless you are a the sort who wants to deny rights to someone who never did anything to offend you then it is hard to understand
I am actually however not of the opinion a CP means as much anyway; and really they should have scrapped them and converted all current CPs with the change in law automatically. CPs were always a compromise imo.

If you believe in equality, you should see that the right of two people who love another to get married shouldn't only be enjoyed by straight people.

Good evening Folks.
Well this is good news because now that they will be married, gay people will be able to make love & not rape each other.

Meant to say that that picture of Equalities Minister Helen Grant was taken after his sex change as he was a former cooks mate on the Ark Royal.

traditional marriage is a religious ceremony which doesn't accommodate two gays being married since there is no provision for it in religious dogma

Traditional marriages, going right back, also allowed for more than one wife (though never more than one husband for a wife); didn't have a problem with marrying children; and was FOR LIFE- none of this divorce nonesense.
You see smelly 'traditional' marriage has come a long way- and doesn't even have to be religious anymore.
You stick to your religious marriages in your Christian church- and stop trying to run down other peoples lives.

John Boswell was a historian and religious Catholic who dedicated much of his scholarly life to studying the late Roman Empire and early Christian Church. Poring over legal and church documents from this era, he discovered something incredible. There were dozens of records of church ceremonies where two men were joined in unions that used the same rituals as heterosexual marriages.

Good afternoon Eddie.
Honestly Eddie I wasn't being nasty in this case, more of a case of the naughty boy in me coming out.
It's just that I can't help but take the Mick out of people when they take themselves or their beliefs too seriously. And on this site the gay contingent are far too serious for a jolly pirate like me.
For most of the time when I post here there is a wry grin on my face & other times, while I type I'm laughing my tits off.Surely you must have sussed me out by now......we've been posting together for years.
To give you a little more insight into the mind of The Shady, over the years I have pissed off several higher ranking officers than myself with my flippant attitude for which I have been seriously rebuked.
And on one such occasion in which an American Army officer insisted that me & my colleagues do a certain thing, which I thought was crap.So I leaped at him & gave him the biggest wettest lip lock that he'd ever had in his life.
Following that there was a lot of shouting, waving of arms & I was threatened with dismissal from the service.
So Eddie my sweet chicken, please don't take my comments too seriously as I have such an unpredictable sense of humour which over the years has caused me to receive grief from my wife, family but most of all from my senior officers.
Honetly Eddie,it's all a game to me.

What people here have pointed out is that marriage has changed a lot over time and therefore makes your defense on those grounds redundant- all the more so since there are historic instances where same sex couples actually could and did marry- but hey don't let logic stop you have a whinge
