First topic message reminder :
Love it.
Is it the hot weather??....the wettest August ever?? are the kids/grandkids driving you mad half way through the long summer holidays?? Whatever it is people seem unusually feisty lately.

Bit sad to imagine a bunch of middle-aged men who'd actually like to be in a relationship with an 18-year-old, isn't it?
Oh I think it’s most definitely their appearance, they look tiny and firm. I doubt any guy watches porn actually wants to date the women they watch.
Chance would be a fine thing.
I am generalising a bit, but I think that many middle aged and older men still yearn for a young girlfriend, whilst women tend more to find men nearer their own age group more attractive.

Haha... Then you get to the age when you know better:

Thank you Quill, that's nice of you to say. x
The Eagles are still my favourite cd to play in the car, top down (weather permitting, it IS Manchester) turn up the volume...and I always have to repeat play 'Desperado'...never get tired of listening to that tune.

I don't know why. He doesn't stand for anything...except maybe his professed libertarianism, which he is reluctant to debate. He's good at trolling, but I'm in the game to discuss and debate. Only twice have I seen him try to defend libertarian doctrine (with Ben), and in two or three posts he had to run and hide. Wonderful topic, but he never gets past the title page.

When I was just out of high school, I lived for a couple of years in Los Angeles. As you may know, runs right up to the beaches of Santa Monica bay. Think Baywatch.
I got a great deal on a huge 98 Oldsmobile drop-top, all white, with all the bells and whistles...and a magnificent stereo. How I loved on hot summer weekends, to drive up and down the Pacific Coast Hwy, top down, babes in teeny-weeny bikinis, with the stereo blasting this song:

Haha Quill.....I can just picture it, like a scene from 'Where the boys are'.
Odd but in the UK, most of the people driving round in cabreolets are oldies.....like us.
Probably because when kids are at home, people are working, not much leisure time, and so on, it's more practical to have a sensible family car.

British engines are too temperamental. The British make their engines too high-compression; Germans build the best engines.

Not talking about Engines mate , it's the design I ment. The Rover V8 is a bloody good engine , push the Pedal to the Metal in my 4.0 litre Range Rover and feel the push in your back , and the roar is out of this World, [I'm getting too sentimental now] !

British mechanics are awful. Compression ratios too high. But yes, as a statue or a potted plant, the E-type Jag was quite pretty.

I've liked cars like that since I was a teenager and my dad checked out "Christine" by Stephen King from the library for me.
Only 44, but I did have to go back to the library and thumb through a good number of pages before I could find a photo of a 1957 Plymouth Fury. Now I can just do this:

The car was used? So that explains driving a car 10 years older than the song "Summer in the City".

The 57 Fury, hot as it is, was on a par with Chevy's and Ford's. But a 98 Old's was barely a notch below a Cadillac. Those high end cars had all the toys. I even had a button on the floor to change the stereo station. They used high-end leather for the upholstery, thicker material for the drop-top, and came with tonneau covers and such.
I read "Christine" when it first came out. I thought he should have made the car a Dodge Charger, with a 426 Wedge engine.

Today's Range Rover and Landrover V8 engines bear no relationship to those old gutless and torqueless little Rover (Leyland) clunkers from the 1960s, '70s and '80s...
Not since both BMW and Ford had turns upgrading the technology, before Ford eventually sold Landrover on to Tata..
*****************************************************************
Jaguar's 3.8 litre and 4.2 litre straight-6s produced a bit more power and torque than Rover's 3.5 litre V8, but those triple SUs must be fun to keep balanced..
Some "hotrodders" have upgraded early model Jags in various ways -- some retrofitting fuel-injection systems, others upgrading to Ford V8 engines and gearboxes.

Haha.....love the way cars and men go in cycles.
When they are young they want the car to pull the girls.
Then they need a family car big enough to cart wife, kids, and family paraphernalia around.
Then when the kids (and grandkids) no longer need ferrying here, there and everywhere, they get the cabriolet or little sporty number they craved for when they were younger.

Cars are simply an extension of horses. Who doesn't love the Kentucky Derby, or races around the world? Young men in small western towns loved to find out whose steed was the fastest. It was a natural transition to cars (and eventually to airplanes).
The government suspended automobile manufacture during Europe's second war, in favor of all the mechanics needed for war. So it was a big deal when the business came roaring back in 1946-49. Ford went for cosmetics, with the shoebox design. GM had been betting on engineering, going with the straight six, but with overhead valves, but had to go to an OHV V8 almost immediately. Chrysler went all engineering with its Ram-Hemi engine.
Throughout the 1950's it was mom and dad and the family car. But it exploded into the sports cars with the Corvette and early T-Birds. Thence on to the muscle cars, with the 396ci Malibu, the 389ci Pontiac GTO (6.4 L), and the Dodge Charger R/T with a 440ci V8.
It was kids and horse racing all over again.

Re: It's a bit feisty round here lately.
So what car do you drive now I wonder??
We (OH and I when we first met) opted for a 3 litre Capri....loved that car, and it took us all over the country till we settled down.....the next few cars were more practical.
We have now gone full circle and have the open top that the kids & grandkids moan about all the time cos if the top is up they are cramped in the back and uncomfy. Doesn't help that vary in size from 5'10 to 6'4''.
Tough....it's our time now.

Never understood that, myself. I've always looked for only a few things in a car -- reliability, fuel efficiency, and being the right size. I've bought small cars ever since I had enough money to be able to choose a car based on anything other than, it's cheap

That sounds like a racing car Nicko (I am not well up on cars) I do know the 3 litre engines go like the clappers.
We used to do well over 100mph down this huge steep road in Cornwall back in the day, there were seldom any other cars around and it was open so we could see for miles that no one else was around, it was very exhilarating though.
