First topic message reminder :

His name is Jeffery Epstein.  He was again arrested this past weekend, after his plane landed in a New Jersey airport from Europe.  He is called a "billionaire financier", but he is better known as a sex trafficker in under aged children.

In his heyday, he and Donald Trump owned competing modeling agencies, specializing in younger women.  Like Trump, he owns homes in Florida and New York City.  It was at his home that Trump is alleged to have raped a 13-year old young woman.

He was embroiled in a state/federal prosecution a couple of years ago, for sex trafficking in Florida.  Republican attorneys, who were in the Justice Department at the time, cut a sweetheart deal for him.  Also, contrary to Justice Department rules, they failed to even inform, let alone ask permission of the victims.

The lead attorney responsible, Alexander Acosta, has since been appointed Secretary of Labor by Donald Trump.  That has led to grumbles that it was somehow a payoff.  The sweetheart deal written, by Acosta, involved dismissing all federal charges, and rolling up all cases in the two state charges, for which he was given no time.  Rachel Maddow did the following special on Secretary Acosta and his buddy, Jeff Epstein"

In the deal, Epstein was given blanket immunity for all of his crimes.  The big question is, why is he not immune from prosecution this time?  Why was he arrested in New Jersey over the weekend?  Didn't his immunity deal work?

The answer must be that there are new, subsequent charges:

American financier Jeffrey Epstein was charged with the sex trafficking of underage girls by federal prosecutors in court in Manhattan on Monday.

It comes more than a decade after he avoided similar charges in Florida in a plea deal.

Prosecutors unsealed an indictment charging him with one count of sex trafficking and one count of sex trafficking conspiracy.

Epstein, 66, was arrested on Saturday night and could appear in federal court on Monday to hear the charges. His lawyer, Jack Goldberger, has said Epstein will plead not guilty.

The former hedge fund manager, known for socialising with politicians and royalty, first came under investigation in 2005 after police in Palm Beach, Florida, received reports he had sexually abused minors in his mansion there.

Epstein has said in court filings that his encounters with alleged victims were consensual and that he believed they were 18 when they occurred.

By 2007, Epstein was facing a potential federal indictment for sexually abusing dozens of girls as young as 14 between 1999 and 2007, directing others to abuse them and paying employees to bring victims to him, according to court filings.

However, Epstein struck a deal in which he pleaded guilty to a lesser Florida state felony prostitution charge. He served a 13-month sentence in county jail, during which he was allowed to leave during the day to go to his office.

The deal has been challenged in court by several of Epstein’s accusers, who say they were denied a chance to have their views about it heard, in violation of the federal Crime Victims’ Rights Act.

In February of this year, a US district judge in Florida agreed, ruling that the deal violated the law.

Even so, the US Department of Justice said in a court filing last month there was no reason to cancel the agreement.

Among the prosecutors involved in the agreement was Alex Acosta, then the US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and now Secretary of Labor for Donald Trump, the US president. A spokeswoman for the Department of Labor on Sunday declined to comment on Epstein’s arrest.

Democrats in the House of Representatives confronted Mr Acosta about his role in the Epstein case in April when the labor secretary appeared before the House Appropriations subcommittee on a routine budget matter.

Acosta responded that human trafficking was “an incredibly important issue” and said his office’s efforts ensured that Epstein faced jail time and had to register as a sex offender.

“I understand the frustration,” Acosta told the subcommittee. “I think it’s important to understand that he was going to get off with no jail time or restitution. It was the work of our office that resulted in him going to jail.“

A Justice Department office is investigating whether government attorneys committed professional misconduct in the Epstein case.

Brad Edwards, a lawyer who represents some of Epstein’s accusers, told Reuters on Sunday that he had taken many calls from “victims crying tears of joy” since news broke of Epstein’s arrest. “One just kept repeating that she was so happy he was finally off the streets,” Mr Edwards said.

Epstein is alleged to have said he admired Donald Trump in the way that he folded his modeling agency in with his beauty pageants, to make a successful business.  He wanted to emulate Trump in his own businesses.

Donald Trump has already been named an unindicted co-conspirator in one case.  Some wonder if he is about to be named in another.  Is he involved in a continuing trade with Epstein?  It is notable that Trump was not given immunity in the Acosta sweetheart deal with Epstein.

We'll see.  Watch this space as this case unfolds.

Yesterday, Friday 12 July 2019, Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta was forced to resign over his involvement with sex trafficker Jeffery Epstein.

Originally, a federal prosecutor of billionaire Epstein 13-years ago, Acosta met off-site with his attorneys and came back with a sweetheart deal for Epstein. It included a short detention with freedom to come and go where he wanted during the day. Acosta has never explained the sweetheart deal, except to argue with the adjective “sweetheart”.

Also, victims were not notified, contrary to law.

Obviously, Acosta was kicked out of office by Trump. But, just as obviously, there appears to be a NYC/Palm Beach sex trafficking ring, of which Trump might have participated. The rape of a 13-year old girl, Trump is alleged to have done, was described as taking place at Epstein's home in NYC. Questions have arisen whether Acosta’s appointment was some sort of payback??

Trump's release of Acosta appears to be an attempt to throw a blanket over the whole story. Watch this space for new details.
