Are women's careers being destroyed by something called "Imposter Syndrome"?
Imposter syndrome (IS) can act as a major obstacle to career progression, especially for women, not to mention the negative effects on the economy as a whole
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
“Any moment someone will catch you out.”
“What made you think you could even attempt this?”
“You’re a failure. A total, shameful failure.”
These cruel doubts manifest in the minds of those suffering a painful and debilitating phenomenon called imposter syndrome (IS). A mixture of anxiety and a persistent inability to recognise one’s own success, this syndrome can be crippling, destroying the careers and lives of its most chronic sufferers.
The syndrome was identified in 1978 by psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. They believed that IS only affected women, but subsequent research has shown that men are also affected. However, women tend to be more susceptible because they produce less testosterone – the confidence hormone.
According to Clare Josa, author of Ditching Imposter Syndrome and a leadership consultant, men are more likely to push through the syndrome while women tend to give in to their self-doubt.

I've never seen such an interesting examination of the negative consequences of low confidence. The article goes on to say that women don't start as many businesses, or even speak up in meetings at work, because of a risk-averse attitude.
Re: Are women's careers being destroyed by something called "Imposter Syndrome"?
Women are genetically programmed to be risk-averse. That's why they don't die in car crashes as often, they don't get killed at work as often, and they don't get killed in leisure activities nearly as often.
Men, who have a woman in their life telling them not to do stupid shit, also tend to live longer than men that don't

Maybe those women really don't know what they're doing.

As to men, I also believe society has conditioned men to not let fear or doubt show, that if you do you are somehow weak. Interestingly enough, in library world I have seen more men say they suffer from IS than other workplaces I have been involved in.
No doubt it’s getting better for both, but still a long way to go.

I have worked with more women than men and I can honestly say I think that they’re mostly over-confident, overly-bitchy and overly-self entitled.
So I’m not sure I buy this at all!

I was reading about the endangered Florida panther the other day, because that's the sort of thing I do, and it said that the panthers often get killed on the highways that criss-cross their habitats.
They said the vast majority of panthers killed on highways are male, and that the females almost never cross highways.
May very well be a female evolutionary instinct to find and stick to a safe situation, as a mother who takes risks is more likely to lose her offspring.

I don’t think women in the workplace are as shy and timid as this article makes out.

I don't think it's really saying that most women are like this, more that women are more susceptible to having it hamper their business/career ambitions.

And I don’t think women are susceptible to having their career hampered by being women. In fact, I think a lot of women play on the fact that they’re women.
I don’t know, perhaps I’m wrong. But the article feels a little off to me...in my experience.

Yup. And it's OK if males run around getting themselves killed. The species can survive losing males. Loss of females will threaten survival of a species.

I agree...
While the "syndrome" itself most likely does exist, I reckon that O/P is actually overstating the real situation and blowing things out of all proportion..
Giving yet another excuse for lazy fat-arsed wastrels to explain away their own incompetencies and inadequacies.
P.S. And, contrary to the lies being peddled in the O/P, women actually start up more businesses, in total, than men -- and have better survival rates..

Fear manifests itself in many different ways. It causes some folks to engage in aggressive outbursts.

And it's a good thing that 'Aggressive Stupidity' isn't a highly contagious condition..
Otherwise Maddog would have infected the rest of the Newsfix crew well before now.

Not all lazy women have fat arses - you're being sexist again. What's your excuse anyway?

Yeah I am in agreement with you on this one.
Its not even a medical condition and even more so men and women equal go through this based on psychology
So why the view point to only go off women with this?
This was shown to be poor in the past but modern radical feminists are now using this as a view to think women are hard done by and again ignoring men equally go through this. Its being used to weaponise against men

It's clear from these 2 posts that you think the OP is wrong. Guess what? I think you are BOTH right! You are not contradicting each other at all. It's perfectly possible to be plagued with self doubt internally ….. and yet be bitchy & bossy externally, appearing overly confident.
In fact I'd say the two go hand in hand. Working in the oestrogen-charged environment in the NHS has shown me that the employees who are calmer and nicer and make it all look so easy are the competent ones. The rude bolshi bitches are the ones who are plagued with self doubt & insecurity and often not up to the job.

You see similar on forums. A mod who yells and curses a lot will always arouse suspicion that they are not up to the task. You think "uh uh, they've bitten off more than they can chew in taking up this role''. A chilled one with a calming presence is the one who knows what they're doing. (I'm defo NOT referring to this site - or any particular site really, just speaking generally)

True, that...
Not all lazy people have fat arses; and not all fat arses ars lazy persons..
Joining the two together in one sentence certainly got your attention though, didn't it ?
P.S. Where's the sexism in my statement, anyway ? I made my comments "gender neutral" -- it was in the O/P that a couple of women were making the topic sexist in intent..
