Checking out your birth day.
Being a bit bored today I decided to try and find out what happened historically on a particular date, my birthday, in various years, so I put in World events and the day and month and some interesting stuff came up, in no particular order:
There were many battles of course but the main ones were Robert the Bruce beating Edward the second and the Battle of Hastings.
Tea ships were burned on this day in Annapolis, Christopher Columbus landed in what is now the Bahamas, Mary Queen of Scots was put on trial, the Senghenydd pit disaster - 439 lives lost, 600 Jews escaped from Sobibor, the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes were published and paper strip photographic film patented. That's the more interesting stuff anyway.

Yes burning tea was tantamount to sacrilege.

Re: Checking out your birth day.
I had a shit-ton of stuff happen on my birthday! Martin Luther burned the papal edict that he recant his views; interestingly enough, Martin Luther King also won the Nobel Peace Prize, many years later.
France became the first country to adopt the metric system; Wyoming Territory became the first place in the United States to grant women the right to vote.
Rudyard Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first-ever English-language writer to do so.
And the big one -- Major League Baseball banned the use of the spitball by rookie pitchers.

Edd's birthday: Approximate domestication of the horse; first written record of Scotch whisky; the first-ever law was passed (in the now-traditional way) in the United States; Sojourner Truth began her career as an anti-slavery activist; the first skirmish broke out in the American Civil War; and the baddest-ass fact:
A freakin' homing pigeon began a flight from London to Namibia (a 11,000 km flight) that it would complete in just 55 days.

A lot of things apparently, though the highlights were:
- English capture of Gibraltar in 1704
- Birth of the Queen Mother in 1900
- The British declaration of war against Germany in 1914

Yes, that is supposed to be so and Guiness too.
One of the whisky making companies in the US was started by a Welsh family - Jack Daniels.

That was because the Irish didn't have a written language. They didn't bother with writing down recipes...they were already consuming it.

Re: Checking out your birth day.
Its probably the case that all regions were making their particular brand of whiskey but there is definitely something in the Guiness story as porter was shipped from North Wales to Ireland at that time.
The Irish have more written history than other regions, it was written later but no British history was actually recorded in writing up to pre Roman History it was oral kept by the Druids. Many years later you get the Irish laws and history plus Hywel Dda's book of laws in Wales, both based on ancient Celtic laws, generally passed down by word of mouth. Ireland managed to keep a great deal of the history because the Romans didn't get there.-

Good post Vintage, very interesting!
And quill... I think you misunderstood what I meant by 'evidence'... I wasn't referring to anything 'written'... I was talking about archeological evidence...
There have been sites found in Wales in which the archeological evidence strongly indicates the production of whiskey... and to have been happening there at a time that predates any other known whiskey production anywhere else!

Re: Checking out your birth day.
My birthday was last Friday.......fourscore years, bugger it!!!!! Whether I reach my fourscore and first after I have taken advantage of my top present - an hour "flying" a WW2 Spitfire simulator at the old RAF Biggin Hill airfield - remains to be seen.
I was still under the impression when I walked through the pub door that I was there for a small family lunch with my daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren and her ladyship...only to be greeted by about twenty family and friends from as far as 200 miles away.
Apparently they had quietly cut me out of the family Facebook group in March and spent the next two months secretly plotting everything online....and I never suspected a bloody thing!
Ps. Belated many happy returns, Eds.
Pps. Back to the thread...I think that on the day I was born a certain Adolf Hitler was busily engaged on taking over other countries and drawing up the final plans for invading Poland within the following few months.

Happy Birthday Fred, and I hope you have many more of them.
As an aside Fred, my Father , who was disabled as a child with Polio, worked at Castle Bromwich Aero, and was part responsible for developing the Fuel Injection system fitted to later "Spits" !
