Residents already abandoning a village threatened by rising sea levels -- in Wales NINTCHDBPICT000214079414

THIS Welsh town is being "abandoned" as rising sea levels could see it vanish in just 25 years.

Fairbourne is tipped to become the first in the UK to be relocated due to the threat of climate change, known as "decommissioning".

This could mean that the 850 people living there could be forced to leave their homes.

Shops would be shut down and the 400 homes would be demolished.

Fairbourne is just a few feet away from the sea of Barmouth Bay, which is getting closer as sea levels continue to rise.

A Shoreline Management Plan for the west of Wales “raises significant concerns over the future sustainability of the defence of Fairbourne”.

Gwynedd Council the town needs to be considered for decommission, confirming that relocating residents is a certainty.

400 HOMES COULD BE DEMOLISHED
Estimates predict that this could happen as early as 2042.

The council is planning to move locals before 2054, when they say “sea level rises and changing weather patterns will mean that it will not be possible to further bolster the village’s sea defences”.

After this there will be no more money spent on defending the town.

Natural Resources Wales has already spent more than £6million on a flood risk management scheme in the area in the last four years

There are currently no plans in place for homeowners to receive compensation if they have to move.

Scientists think that sea levels are now rising at the extreme end of what was predicted to happen gradually just a few years ago.

When the effects of climate change come to your front door, will people finally admit there's an urgent problem?

Yes. Until horrific events personally happen to majority of people or their loved ones, they just don’t get it or offer meaningless platitudes.

There are stories of Cardigan Bay once being dry land with rich farm lands, the sea inundated the land and farms, which may or may not be true that there were farms there but there is evidence of bronze age woodland there, tree stumps can be seen after big storms strip away the sands, also stone walls and roads leading into the sea.

I have no idea why some people can’t see it. I only really go by what I see with my own eyes, hear with my own ears and experience with my own perception.

And climate change is happening.

Razz

Tommy, smelly' and DYKnose are continually telling us that accelerated climate change doesn't exist -- that it is supposedly some gigantic worldwide conspiracy by 'greenies', commies, the Pentagon, farmers, fishers and foresters, solar panel and wind turbine manufacturers, Pacific Islanders, and the melting icecaps themselves, all with the singular purpose of funnelling "$$billions$$" into Al Gores bank accounts each year...

I propose that the British government should henceforth employ Tommy, smelly and Deano into a "climate denialist disinformation ministry" and send tham out to placate and pacify any and all of those serfs and peasants worrying over rising sea levels..

Have you ever been to Fairbourne Tommy?

We have gotten the ferry from Barmouth over to the little train station, taken the steam train from Barmouth into Fairbourne a few times....it was a nice day out for the grandkids, there used to be a mini golf where the kids would play for a couple of hours.
Last time we went it was allready looking like a ghost town, the golf had gone, the pub remains, but it was empty, the whole village looked forgotten about to me.
The beach is just stone and rock, and it was noticable that over the last 10 years the defences seem to be more inadequate for what is happening there.

Most of the houses in coastal areas that are being abandoned, are not from rising Sea levels but from Coastal Erosion !

The crazy golf for kids has gone, the pub was empty, and I have no idea where the amusements are, they must be in the tiny shop that sells buckets and spades or the back room of the pub.
The scenery is, as it  is  in most areas of Wales.... spectacular.

neither does anyone mention that in some areas land is being built up by deposition OR the fact that along a north east to south west line the country is sinking in the south and rising in the north as a result of rebound from the release of the weight of 2 miles of ice in the last ice age. Sinking at a rate of up to 3mm per YEAR of course the subsequent apparant rise of sea level id SOLEY due to climate change innit....

so explain why scotland is GAINING on sea levels??????

It's not gaining as fast as it had been, and is expected to start losing to sea levels before too much longer. https://www.nature.scot/landforms-and-geology/scotlands-rocks-landforms-and-soils/landforms/coasts/present-and-future-sea-levels

Shocked   Left wing?  Nicknames are left wing?

You think Russo-Republican Donald Trump is left wing?  He's the master of nicknames.

Wikipedia wrote:United States President, businessman, and television personality Donald Trump became widely known during the 2016 United States presidential election and his subsequent presidency for using nicknames to criticize foreign leaders, media figures, and politicians.

I dont get this left wing right wing mentality of branding everyone who does this or that as belinging to a certain political party, so therfore they have the same mindset in everything they say and do..
There are childish name calling idiots in every corner, their political leanings have nothing to do with it..

Its as mad a comparison as saying all blondes are stupid.
