Intersting poll an what Americans are looking for, and not looking for.
By CCN.com: A new NBC/WSJ poll has revealed what Americans don’t want as president – a socialist or a septuagenarian over 75. Unfortunately for Democrats, their two front-runners each possess at least one of those two qualities. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, 77, is an avowed socialist, according to Bloomberg. Though former vice president Joe Biden is yet to declare his candidacy, he is 76.
Specifically, the poll found that only 37 percent of the respondents found a presidential candidate over 75 desirable. Majority of voters, in fact, indicated they would be enthusiastic or comfortable with a youthful president. According to the survey, 58 percent of the respondents would be accepting of a candidate under the age of 40.
On political ideology, only 25 percent of the respondents indicated that being socialist was a desirable characteristic for a presidential candidate. Socialism was also seen as a ‘dirty word,’ according to the poll. Just 18 percent of Americans had a positive view of the term while 50 percent viewed it negatively, according to NBC News. With regard to capitalism, 19 percent viewed it negatively while 50 percent had a positive view.

Basically, black, white, male, female, gay or straight is OK. But lets forget about the 75 year olds and the commies.

Another interesting point. Americans are more comfortable with a gay or lesbian candidate than a evangelical Christian.

Probably because strong religious views can be a serious driver in political action.
Incidentally, despite this poll, Bernie is still killing it in the polls

Bernie is doing well compared to about a dozen others. But the problem is, that he won't pick up support from the other non socialist in the Dem Party.
When people like Booker and Gillibrand drop out, their voters will not go to Sanders.
He is going to get all of the socialist vote in the democratic party. That won't be enough for the nomination.

Re: Intersting poll an what Americans are looking for, and not looking for.
And you're leaving off Biden, who is leading in the polls.
His voters are not going to be very enthusiastic about a socialist.
They would like someone like Beto though.
Let's face it. We don't need another 75 (or 79) year old white dude in the Whitehouse.

And, many of the Dems I know think Biden-Beto would be the dream team for them. They are probably right. I thinks that's the best combination the Dems could come up with.
But lately, both parties have a bad habit of picking the shittiest candidate they have. In that case it will be Trump vs Sanders. What a clusterfuck. An exciting clusterfuck as we destroy ourselves with our poor choices, but a clusterfuck nonetheless.

Having followed a few political commentators on this topic, apparently on two occasions Biden has run in the primaries and been ahead in the polls, only to crumble and bow out fairly quickly.
One of the main arguments I hear against Dems choosing a moderate capitalist is that for the Republican or Right-leaning swing voters they want to convince to switch sides - well, why would they choose for a diluted Democrat version of the real deal they get with the Republicans?
The Dems could win the nomination with a moderate centrist, as they did with Hillary, and lead to an election which disenfranchises young voters who just see no difference in the two offerings (other than the GOP fielding the same senile blimp they did last time). Trump, meanwhile, would bombard whichever of the two you mention goes head-to-head with him for being political losers who have no chance. One a loser to Ted, another who'd have managed to win only his 3rd or 4th primary and is tainted in many eyes by links to Obama (not tainted in Dem's eyes but certainly in Republican's).
I don't think age matters. No two 70 odd year olds are alike. Trump and Bernie couldn't be more different. (PS: Biden is only a year younger than Sanders. Obama was in his fifties and apparently hated by half the country...).

Because a diluted democrat would be pro choice, pro medicare for all and pro more gun laws. All of the democrats support that, without calling for the eventual abolishment of private corporations.
And Sanders lost to Hillary in the primaries. Maybe it was rigged a little, but Trump could use that against Bernie as well.
You have to remember that only about 35% of Americans call them selves Reps, and about 35% call themselves Dems.
There's a bunch of independents that need convincing and this poll is picking up on much of that.
America doesn't want an old guy, or a socialist.

And apparently age does matter. It's not insurmountable, but it's going to matter. Of course if it's Trump vs another old guy, the age won't really matter I guess.

A poll says age doesn't matter.
Trump won the 2016 GOP nomination against all younger guys.
Sanders and Biden lead the Dem runners this year.
The polls about 'what America wants' and the ACTUAL election polls (and results) seem to suggest it is a none issue

Trump and the Republicans have ruined, for a long time to come, the idea of old, white men being popular in government. They have filled out the role of tricksters and flimflam men, and turned off a lot of voters.
People see much more than the average Republican realizes. And, they are not as dumb as the average Republican thinks. The rapidity with which Trump flips--N. Korean leader = rocketman = now my best friend--or, bring unemployment down, cage babies--makes people aware of the senility associated with old age. But it will pass.

He's senile, and that's what got people bothered. 73 or 75, what is the difference? Old and senile comes at different ages.
Besides, Trumpz are a New York crime family...that doesn't sit well with voters in Iowa.

A hand-job is 'desirable'. But it ain't nothin' like the real thing.
And Trump isn't even 75 yet.
Truth is, these respondents are the same 37% who give Trump his perennial low approval ratings. What the pundits call his 'base'. You see a number like '37%' and you know what it is right off. Oh, that's Trump's popularity showing. These people see things like "older candidate" as surrogate code for Trump himself. They are tribal hand-holders.

75 is an arbitrary number. But it was chosen. I think the closer you get to 80, the more likely folks think you are not really up to a very stressful job.

I believe I'm spot on about the poll. But no Redneck is going to understand subtleties and nuances in interpretation.
Here, play with this: 2 + 2 = 4.

Why do you need it explained to you then, Redneck? The similarity and repetitiveness of the number of '37' will queue any analyst, that it is the 'base' showing up over and over again.

What is 'random' all about, if it doesn't include a significant portion of the population? Maybe you need to take a course in bi-nomial analysis.

If you are so convinced by this poll that Americans don't want a 70-odd year old white guy - then can you give us your explanation as to why there remains widespread RW support of Trump and why the two leading Democrats are 70-odd year old white guys.

I think Sanders is a great option. Biden will be just like Obama - which isn't terrible, but isn't ideal either. People voted for Trump because they didn't want 'more of the same'.
And there are plenty of alternatives, they just aren't inspiring as Bernie is; nor as known as Biden is.

Now I think more Americans would come out to vote for someone that picked up where Obama left off in regards to healthcare and most policies.
I'm think Ideal candidate is;
mid to late 40's
2nd or 3rd generation Latino or Puerto Rican American
Similar to Obama in policy (promising to restore and improve on Obama's good work)
'Limited' Corporate connections
5+ years in a fairly high government position. (senator, governor etc)
It would also be great if Obama liked him, I think we can use the British Princes as an example of where you could tell when Obama 'actually' liked someone. And I think His support would go a long way, and remind people of the good old days when the political circus wasn't played out over twitter daily.

It would also be great if Obama liked him, I think we can use the British Princes as an example of where you could tell when Obama 'actually' liked someone. And I think His support would go a long way, and remind people of the good old days when the political circus wasn't played out over twitter daily.
I think you're optimistic about how all Americans view the Obama years. Sure, some sensible folk might have good opinions, but there a huge swathe of America who are still against him and all he did.
The Democratic primaries are really a fight between a dull, gradually progressing return to moderatism, and break neck, scary social democracy.
Either is preferable to Trump, and I honestly think Trump will lose whoever comes out on top.
I'd just like the battles to be clean.

Biden is the better option of the 2 but... they could get better

I'm think Ideal candidate is;
mid to late 40's
2nd or 3rd generation Latino or Puerto Rican American
Similar to Obama in policy (promising to restore and improve on Obama's good work)

True. but Trump wasn't over 75. He's old, but not crazy old.
He's senile, and that's what got people bothered. 73 or 75, what is the difference? Old and senile comes at different ages.
Besides, Trumpz are a New York crime family...that doesn't sit well with voters in Iowa.
Whatever else he is, he's not senile. Don't be so lazy.
