Children as young as 10 are changing their gender by deed poll with one a day switching from 'Miss to Master' or 'Master to Miss'

Parents are switching the gender of children as young as 10 by deed poll as record numbers identify as transgender in Britain.

There has been a surge in the number of under-16s swapping from Miss to Master or Master to Miss in the past five years.

Every day roughly one youngster has their name changed to signify the switch. according to the UK Deed Poll Service.

Swapping the title is commonly coupled with ditching the child's birth name in favour of one from the opposite sex. Louise Bowers, a senior deed polls officer, told The Sunday Times: 'We used to issue a couple of these deed polls every couple of months — but now it’s seven to 10 a week. The majority are teenagers — 14 or 15 — but they go down to the age of 10.'

She added that previously the majority of applications concerned children born male wanting to adopt a female name. But that has shifted and the officer says that now 'there are more Misses to Masters than Masters to Misses'.
