Okay. Obama was the alternative to the party that George W. Bush, he of the 19 percent approval rating, came from. He could have been elected if he said he was from Mars.

He came in while we were fighting two wars and teetering on the brink of an economic depression. That was real, by the way. I've seen a tree full of ornaments that just represents the Texans who died in those wars, let alone all Americans. And I saw so many people lose their jobs and be forced to move back in with their elderly parents.

He also decided to tackle the health care system that had people with dementia being dumped on the street in a hospital gown because they had no money to pay. Did a decent job but if you ask me, he compromised too much with Republicans.

Along the way he also passed a law that says two people doing the exact same job have to be paid the same starting rate even if one of them happens to be a woman, and he created a program to help rural white people in Appalachia escape from poverty (this is interesting, because those people voted for Trump and then were dismayed when he took that program away).

It was a milestone, for sure, that a half-black man was elected president. But he took over leadership of a country that was badly damaged by the previous president and he had to solve the existential crises, not fix society.

Trump has not done more for black people than Obama did. That's a right-wing myth; Google it.

There's no black backlash against the Democrats. Blacks voted 90 percent in favor of the Democrats, in line with every election since around 1970.

What can be done to heal America? Well, that's a tall order but I would say we all need to try to listen more and bash less. We need to be more forgiving and more open-minded. And really, we need a leader who inspires that, because Americans definitely tend to take cues from the president.

Which is why I have chosen NewsFix as the venue to announce my candidacy for president in 2020. Not only will everyone get free porn, but they'll get free GOOD porn, which is quite a different beast.

Okay, I get that, as best as I can, with the most my empathy can give me, not being physically in that situation. (And I've found that when I find myself in situations I only imagined before, I basically didn't imagine them right.)

But these black-only dorms and black-only graduation ceremonies aren't part of the fight. If you look at it like a battle, there's the fight, and there's the part where the armies stop fighting and sleep. This is a refuge from the fight. It's an attempt to have something that isn't the fight, that's just ordinary life.

I personally can't fault someone for sometimes needing to be able to take a break from some noble struggle and just be a human being for a little while.

regardless of what was happening at the time in the country, obama is still black and he was still voted in the same way as any other president and was hugely popular so to imply that blacks are somehow downtrodden is clearly bollox.

I really just think that the reason people in this thread aren't seeing my point is that they don't seem to get that a white-only dorm or graduation ceremony in America would not be held because those white students wanted a getaway from racism; it would be because they wanted a getaway from non-whites.

Whereas these black-only dorms and ceremonies are about getting away from racism, not because they hate white people. Okay, sure, some of them assuredly do hate white people, but just in my experience, the black Americans I've met have mostly seemed quite happy to be friendly with me when they realize I treat them like I treat everybody else.

There is this one rude-ass black girl at McDonald's, though. Still figuring out how to get her back ...

I just read through the thread again, it's one of the more interesting ones posted up lately.
The lone American (Ben) obviously has a completely different take on this, as the majority on this thread are  Brits, and I really think everyone has to walk in that persons shoes, see's what he sees, live that life, to understand why opinions so often differ on matters that seem so clear cut to others.
We still have racial discrimination in this country, but we dont live in the past and try to divide communities, the communities that do that to themselves are the backwards ones, as seen in the Pakistani gangs that have operated for decades here.
Nowhere is perfect, but the majority of indigenous Brits are open minded about diversity, which is why so many live peacfully side by side with people of different colour and origins.

I like HT's analogy of how women rose to become no longer second class citizens.....it's true and makes complete sense that fighting for rights is a lot more progressive than hiding away.

This was a response to what Syl said about "living in the past," I was trying to show that it's not just about the past, but what goes on today.

Yet again, universities ALLOWING black students to have all-black dorms is not done as a solution to racism, but as a way for black people to live part of their day in an environment where they won't face racism.

This is not FORCED segregation in which there's a whites-only and a blacks-only dorm. This is voluntary segregation, which once again, I don't think is good, but I understand, when it comes to black people wanting some respite from racism.

And I have no idea why any white person would care about this one bit, let alone feel like it's some rampant threat that must be put down.

there was something recently discussed can't remember the details but to do with a white footballer had bought his parents a new pad and it was reported as something generous and noble which indeed it was but when a black footballer did the same it was reported more as flashing his money around etc,,,i cant remember exactly but the same story was given a different spin which could indeed be perceived as because of skin colour,,,,,even if there were no proof, i get why that would be an issue.

but as for black folks being locked up for the same crimes that whitey gets away with. this all happened under obama's rule. the democrats locked up shit load of black men and trump is working on prison reform and more opportunities for blacks. at least he is trying to fix the situation which is more than obama ever did.

Actually the prison reform that Trump is touting is a watered-down version of what Democrats have been calling for since Reagan launched his poorly thought-out "tough on crime" initiatives. Obama did a lot of work on criminal justice reform and was the first president in nearly four decades to leave office with a smaller prison population than he inherited.

Some of our British members would do well to remember that the U.S. president isn't a monarch and has little power over many facets of American life, and that the U.S. government wasn't designed to be changed quickly and radically at the same time. It can make small changes quickly and big changes slowly, but not big changes quickly.

Also, it took a major and recent shift in Republican thinking for Trump's bill to pass. And I think it probably took a lot of arm-twisting from Trump's staff as well.

Separating black from white is a step backwards though....for whatever reason.

The injustices you mention that still happen in this modern day are obviously wrong, and obviously some people still cling on to the racist stereotypes, but that happens to white poor people, women, gays, handicapped, gingers, maybe not on the same scale....but anyone in fact who isn't white, male and middleclass, are treated as lesser every day somewhere in the UK too....and the answer is to educate the blinkered not isolate the victims.

Thats my opinion, but as I pointed out, I dont walk in your shoes so though I think it's a bad idea, I respect your opinion to support it.
