Ken Kesey, Sometimes a Great Notion (1964), starring Paul Newman and Lee Remick.  A lot of critics say it's better than his other book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962).

See the last scene: dead man's finger, tied to mast of a logging boat.
