Police believe a deadly stabbing spree in Melbourne by a Somali-born Australian man was an act of terrorism, possibly designed to explode a vehicle filled with gas cylinders in the city centre during rush hour.

In an attack described by the state premier as an “act of evil”, the man sped a utility vehicle down Bourke Street, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, and then stopped and apparently set it alight before randomly stabbing pedestrians. One person was killed and two, aged 26 and 58, were injured.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The man was named by Melbourne’s Herald Sun as Mohamed Khalif, 31, whose 21-year-old brother was accused of plotting a mass murder on New Year’s Eve at Federation Square last year, a city centre hub and popular tourist spot.

Footage taken by witnesses showed the man lunging with a large knife at police, who shot him in the chest and killed him. Bystanders were yelling at police: "Just shoot him, just shoot him".

Isil’s propaganda channel said the group was behind the attack.

"The perpetrator of the operation... in Melbourne... was an Islamic State fighter and carried out the operation... to target nationals of the coalition" fighting Isil, Amaq reported a jihadist security source as saying.

Revealed: Somali-born terrorist who stabbed three shoppers, killing one, is brother of man arrested over 'foiled gun attack' in Melbourne last year - as ISIS claim lone wolf as one of their own.

All I can say is one thing

So many people are suffering from ostrich parasitic syndrome

We need to actually take the war to extreme people. No matter if religious or political in their extreme views and stop pandering. Too many people are dying and we simple cannot ignore the threat world wide. I believe that the west is costantly playing down threats, in order to seek harmony. Which is having the opposite effect. As this then renders the units tackling this to be in fear that they could be accused of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia etc, from tackling the actual threats. This has nothing to do with conflicts or wars, but hateful ideologies. Whether Far right, Far left, and religious.

Australia is one of the most progressive countries and the fact this man had a brother that also tried to murder people. Shows the failings of the left and right to tackle extremism.
