Mother of 'jackass' Liverpool backpacker facing ten years in a Thai prison after spray-painting 'Scouse Lee' on an 800-year-old fortress says she is 'embarrassed and ashamed'
The mum of a backpacker facing ten years in a Thai prison after he sprawled graffiti on an 800-year-old fortress says she is 'embarrassed and ashamed' of her son.
Lee Furlong was caught on CCTV using a can of black spray paint to tag the historic Tha Phae gate in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, yesterday at 4am.
The 23-year-old managed to spell 'Scouse' incorrectly, first writing 'Scousse Lee' before going back over the letters and changing it to 'Scouser Lee'.
The graffiti sparked outrage among locals who accused the traveller of disrespecting the ancient 13th century monument and their country.
But his mum, Michelle Furlong, says his embarrassing behaviour may actually be caused by rare brain condition - Tuberous Sclerosis Complex - and discovering his grandmother was on her death bed.
Today, Furlong admitted he was now 'terrified' and was 'blind drunk' when he picked up the can of black spray.

What a fucking idiot scumbag. It's not enough to turn Britain into a midden, they think they can go abroad and deface another culture's sacred site?
I hope he does the ten years. He's got the sort of face you want to smack endlessly. What a bloody pair of brainless fools.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex? Obviously doesn't affect his capacity to drink himself senseless and have a jolly good time in other areas.

I have little doubt that some idiot - probably a "yuman rights" lawyer touting for class action business - will now start bleating that this dickhead's "right to freedom of speech and expression has been infringed by a brutal dictatorship", or some such crap.
What he did was little different to spraying mindless graffiti on the memorial to Thomas a'Becket in Canterbury Cathedral or on the door of Shakespeare's house in Stratford-upon-Avon.
I hope they chuck away the key to his cell.

I have to dissagree with you there didge...freedom of expression DOES not include the freedom to express yourself anywhere you want without due regard to what you are being free all over.
its like the right to your home....what you DONT have is a right TO a home only the right to have the home you have ...if you see what I mean.
your freedom of expression can ONLY be applied (in the sense of actually writing/drawing something) to either your own property (be that your house car or a block of writing paper)
OR
to other property you have the owners permission to so express yourself upon
freedom of expression is more to do with the freedom to hold and EXPRESS (i.e. share, make public etc) a point of view/idea concept etc
NOT a blanket freedom as to the MEANS of that expression.....
so ...for example
films of an explicit sexual nature need to be kept out of sight of minors/sold in licence shops cannot be screened on main stream TV etc etc
be right didge the guy wasnt excercising his "freedom of expression"...he was being a knob....a pointless waste of oxygen type knob

Empathic bullshit mate and its based on your own morality
Hence you are placing barrriers to freedom of expression
Now some are applied within law, but does this allow, No matter how wrong they are for freedom of expression?
For example. I think holocasut denial, is as dumb and as ignorant as it gets, but should it be criminal?
No
To do so, falls, down a slippery slope
If your rule applies, then the rule of law applies to cave paintings from the very past and who owns ownership over them?
Do you see the slippery slope you have gone down mate?
This then allows, as we have seen, for the likes of Islamic numpties to rule on what they see as grafetee. Whilst, I condemn this idiot for what he has done. Nobody can claim, it is a criminal act, worthy, of denying a person of 8 years of his life.
So your arguments are moot, and based on what you think society should be and the bases is for his crime. Is based on offense and feelings.
So porn is kept out of sight and in this case, what do we do with all the ancient art from the past Victor?
Do as the Catholic church did, and censor said art, by defacing them?
So I agree what he did was wrong. but does that mean, it warrants such a penalty?

lets face it his "expression" wasnt even of any social cultural or artistic merit.
It was vandalism, wanton defacing of an ancient and protected artefact and THAT in fact is what he is charged with,,,nothing to do with the message, nothing to do with isis or any other bogey man.....purely for defacing a protected monument......and If the penalty over there is 10 years and a massive fine for doing so ...so beit....sereves the moron right....
lets face it didge.....it wouldnt do well for idiots like this to be spray painting stonehenge would it....
maybe we should have similar scales of penalty for those idiotic scumbags that urinated on the war memorials.......

So based on you're precerived view on this. You would have had the builders of the pyramid. In the kings chamber roofs, executed as unwarranted vandalism and executed.
Again based on a perceived view?
You think that warrants 8 years in jail?
Seriously?
I suggest you take to task the very people of London, by building on the very foundations of its ancient city, but you wont, because you hold a very different aspect as to what you class as defacing
So I agree it was vandalism, which being told, has happened countless times iwth invasions of this country. My sole point is this does not even warrant a jail sentence. As defacing a monument, is nothing more than freedoom of expression. All that should happen, is they pay the cost to restore.
The view to jail someone 8 years, based on their basic beliefs and actions against this, which does no harm to anyone. Is isheer bollocks to sentence them, no matter what a dick they are

You say red herring, then how did laws allow for pre christian places of worship to be destroyed?
Hence what you need to question is the law for the time?
What this dick did, was wrong, but does it warrant 8 years?
Does it fuck
As you basically argue against freedom of expression

Re: Mother of 'jackass' Liverpool backpacker facing ten years in a Thai prison after spray-painting 'Scouse Lee' on an 800-year-old fortress says she is 'embarrassed and ashamed'
you have a very warped view of what constitutes freedom of expression,
vandalism is NOT freedom of expression
nor is what some ancient egyptian or catholic prat did in the past in anyway relevant or to the point.
they have a law over there, that damaging/defacing what ammounts to a scheduled ancient monument in our terms, is punishable by up to 10 years in jail AND a massive fine so thats it...simples......
how about ...respect and obey the law of the country you are visiting......just for a start.

Maybe the pyramid builders were executed, what happens when the damage can't be removed or restored?
One of the reasons you are not allowed into the stone circle in Stonehenge is because of graffiti.
We are only caretakers of these places and I for one would like to leave them as much as they are for future generations.
How would you react if someone 'expressed themselves' all over the front of your house?

Oh for goodness sake
So your view to punish people, for defacing a momument and you think they were executed. Based on no evidence?
If it was not for graffiti, we would have no idea of the past
Do you fucking understand, how, because people of the past, did this, we have this knowledge?
I am sure people like you existed in the past and were aghast when people painted on caves, or Michelangelo painted the Sistine chapel
Is it wrong when people deface art?
Yes
Is it even more hypocritical when people ignorant of history, fail to knowe the very saints they follow in christianity today. Are nothing more than pagan deities, that had their shrines defaced?
Seriously, shut up with the bullshit Vintage

I have no warped view and again vandalism, is nothing more than a made up concept
So what happened in the past is very much what your druid friends would have done, to those they disagreed with
Explain to me, why such a law should be more punsiable than raping a child?
How about you stop being an elistist and understand, such defacing can easily be cleaned and by the dick that carried this out
Defacing momuments should not be on a par with child abuse
Period
If you think it does, then your morality is fucked

perhaps the problem is with the punishment for child abuse then didge......
and you are wrong about the druids.....in the areas they came up against other images/practices etc (primarily in what was gaul) they adopted these images and practices into their own ideology, and generally respected these "foreign" deities (as did the pre christian romans) on the basis that it doesnt do well to upset the local gods, and the more gods you have on your side the better.....
given that much druidic culture is late bronze age into the iron age, there is strong evidence from archaeology that indeed things like burial barrows were very much respected and indeed revered from age to age...even the saxons, after the romans would place their burials close to or even within these ancient burial mounds

Sorry, but are you seriously telling me, we should place people in jail for defacing monuments?
As much as they disgust me, are you kidding me, that we should waste tax payers money placing them in jail. When they could be better spent restoring said monuments?
Oh come on mate about the time of the druids. We also know from Roman writings that they also carried out human sacrifice
Granted, that is bias writing, from the Romans, but one thing is clear, Roman warriors had a fear of British celts for this reason
Either this was true, or the propaganda worked mate
So show to me, what previous momunments survive that are pre druid in the uk?
We know of others in places in Malta, so why is there none in the UK?

stone henge for one
thats neoolithic (pre druidic)
in fact most of the henges are
add to that that in britain there wasnt much beyond henges (and a few early barrow burials) that are "monumental" and hence likely to survive in any case....
as to human sacrifice, well as you say biased writing and propaganda, BUT also I suspect tinged with a bit of truth, BUT you cannot conflate human sacrifice with a willingness to despoil others gods and holy places...they may well have assimilated them, but were not prone to despoiling them.......And the romans had all need to shudder...mithraism had a very dark side to it as well

Having said that, at the time, many women, in some places, if you read Herodotus. Fought over who was the best wife, when their husband died. bear in mind also that the classical world was somewhat ahead in philosophy, architecture and many other things, so what was going on in the thracian area was not entirely relevant to what was happening in cold wet britain at the same time (though doubless there was SOME contact)

you may find this interesting didge...this is only one part of a larger article
Who Built Stonehenge?
According to the 12th-century writer Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose tale of King Arthur and mythical account of English history were considered factual well into the Middle Ages, Stonehenge is the handiwork of the wizard Merlin. In the mid-fifth century, the story goes, hundreds of British nobles were slaughtered by the Saxons and buried on Salisbury Plain. Hoping to erect a memorial to his fallen subjects, King Aureoles Ambrosias sent an army to Ireland to retrieve a stone circle known as the Giants’ Ring, which ancient giants had built from magical African bluestones. The soldiers successfully defeated the Irish but failed to move the stones, so Merlin used his sorcery to spirit them across the sea and arrange them above the mass grave. Legend has it that Ambrosias and his brother Uther, King Arthur’s father, are buried there as well.
While many believed Monmouth’s account to be the true story of Stonehenge’s creation for centuries, the monument’s construction predates Merlin—or, at least, the real-life figures who are said to have inspired him—by several thousand years. Other early hypotheses attributed its building to the Saxons, Danes, Romans, Greeks or Egyptians. In the 17th century, archaeologist John Aubrey made the claim that Stonehenge was the work of the Celtic high priests known as the Druids, a theory widely popularized by the antiquarian William Stukeley, who had unearthed primitive graves at the site. Even today, people who identify as modern Druids continue to gather at Stonehenge for the summer solstice. However, in the mid-20th century, radiocarbon dating demonstrated that Stonehenge stood more than 1,000 years before the Celts inhabited the region, eliminating the ancient Druids from the running.

They had many of course, but here is the warped part and this happen in the Thracian areas. The wife most revered, had her throat slit. To then be burned with her husband above all other wives and even worse. The others felt shame
How fucked up is that mate?
I get your points though
which all goes to prove that good and evil really are merely perspective......
Now we get very deep
How can a view to give ones life for another, when it serves no purpose be any good?
Indeed perspectives, but lets base this on merit mate?
but isnt "merit" merely a part of that perspective??? surely those who willingly did this considered it to be a meritorious act?
YOU are merely looking at it through the bias of your own perspective/ culture/ whatever
remember when debating these things we cannot judge these peoples morals by OUR standards and mores...the best we can say is "that by OUR standards.......etc etc" we cannot say "these people were intrinsically evil of and within themselves"

I think its very interesting and think its as old as the ancient pyramids.
I take that as a realiable source as well mate. So not knocking either, though its very hard to assertain what actually happened in the past. Lets face it, Roman emporers gave druids a bad press, did they not?
Some of the oldeest monuments are found in Malta and have very similar stone age works, but they are nothing compare to Gobekli Tepe

Of course he was from Liverpool. And of course he couldn't even spell Scouse right
Sorry, you can take a boy out of Manchester but...
Joking aside, this is sad, and surprising. This is only a few minutes from my school and it is usually well respected by tourists, of which there are many from every country.
It is a gorgeous area, the wall actually surrounds the old city and the gate is the most famous part. They have a huge street market in the area once a week
What saddens me is he must know how nice and respectful Thai people are, which makes doing this even worse. Thailand is, however, known for enforcing laws regarding respect harshly. So he should've known the risk.
Is 8 years a bit much? Yes. Do I care that much? No, because his graffiti was just meaningless vandalism. I'm sure he won't serve anything like that time in the end anyway.

The man is a dick and not surprised he is a scouser to be honest mate and met some right scouse dicks, through my time following England abroad. So many times, I have been embarressed to watch them do a runner without paying in restaurants. This does not extend to your everyday person from Liverpool, but just generally those that are ardent Liverpool and Everton supporters. To me, they are some of the worst supporters and it always used to annoy me how the media painted them as loveable fans. I saw people be attacked by mobs of them and litterally have their jeans, trainers stolen off them. Most fans from other clubs, all hold this distain for scouse supporters.
Again, I do not think it warrants jail time, but to clean it up and pay for the crime, through a cost. A big cost to their pockets

Tell me about it.
Every year it's the same story in the media. Poor Liverpool fans. No one is allowed to forget Hillsborough (nor should they, but nor should it milked for sympathy every year either). The most self-entitled supporters in the world
Their attack on the MCFC bus last year outside Anfield says it all.
Funny video btw, always love the banter between North/South

Lol, that is from the film, "Lock stock and two smoking barrels. Love that film mate
Indeed and they all miss talking about the Heysel Stadium disaster, which was most definately caused by the Liverpool fans.
As much as the police were responsible for the mistakes at Hilsboruough, to me, the fans without tickets trying to get in, also should share blame for this disaster. Again countless times, I have seen scouse fans "jibbing" into England games, without tickets and it still happens today.
I think this sums it up best and posts the link to what you are talking about for others to see, in regards to the attack on the MCFC coach mate
For some reason, the press are presenting Liverpool fans as a brilliant example of sportsmanship. That they represent the English game with aplomb. What parallel universe have I slipped into?
These Liverpool fans got English football banned from Europe for 6 years after their behaviour caused the death of 39 Juventus fans at Heysel.
These Liverpool fans robbed off their own in Istanbul. Stealing tickets, travelling with fake tickets and jibbing through the barriers to see Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final.
These Liverpool fans repeated the trick in 2007 at the Champions League Final in Athens. Selling their own fake tickets for £1,000. Travelling in their masses without tickets causing unsafe over crowding within the police cordon’s and fan zones.
Liverpool fan’s did similar at the Emirates Stadium during the Champions League Quarter Final in 2008. Every club throughout the Premier League will have their own stories of too many Liverpool fans turning up, fake tickets, and the lack of concern many Scousers have for their own fans safety. It seems to a Scouser, it is more important to see a game of football then be an honest, upstanding citizen. Their reckless behaviour is an accident waiting to happen.
And who can forget the Michael Shield’s incident. Whilst Shields has been correctly released from a jail after the murder of a Bulgarian man before a Liverpool away game, there is a murderer out there who was happy with his own mate taking the fall. Happy someone else taking a 10 year sentence for his crime. Happy for a fellow human being to be banged up abroad whilst he sits in Liverpool, probably still going to games, without a care in the world.
These incidents are not the only ones which highlight how poor the Liverpool fans are. Whilst the world mourns those who lost their lives at Hillsborough, Liverpool fans quite happily sing and gloat about the Munich disaster.
When Alan Smith broke his leg in 2006, those kind hearted Liverpool fans threw beer cans at the ambulance, blocked its progress, and attempted to turn it over. Nice men then.
Whilst Manchester City fans respectfully remembered those who lost their life at Hillsborough, them Scouser’s attacked a coach, bricking the windows. The coach was reported to have had a ‘Justice for the 96’ flag in its window. What respect the Liverpool fans have for their fellow fans.
Liverpool fans are certainly not good sportsmen, they are the shame of English football.

Yeah, really, really sad and ugly when you see it all spelled out like that. They couldn't care less. And I know the majority are probably alright, but there is a significant number who bring the entire support base into disgrace.
Yet, as you said, they remain the darlings of the media and the likes of Gary Lineker. Partly, I believe, due to the boy next door, honest bloke players like Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard.
Most English fans see them for what they are though, and it isn't pretty. And the disrespect extends to Istanbul and as we see on the OP, as far as Thailand.

Oh I dont know mate, the Brummie accents is a monotone drone at times

Southern bumkin:"Haaalooooo their cuuuurly. Waaat you waaana do is goooo down yoooonder road and tuuurn left. Ohhh and doont foooorget to stop at the lovely pie shop"

Some people get mixed up here, the Black country accent is entirely different from the Birmingham one !
The Brummie accent is a "warm" one. The Liverpool one is high pitched and "grates" on you .

On that I agree, though 3 accents from a woman, that make me melt
Irish, French and Manc accent
French always comes top of the list to my dying shame....
There is something exponentially sexy about the French accent with a French lady...
Mind you the Irish accent with an Irish lass, makes me also go weak at the knees...

I love all the quirks and charms each accent has tbh. Though yeah, Scouse does grate but even it has its own weird likability sometimes (and when it isn't TOO OTT lol).
Brummie does sound monotone (dare I say boring lol) but also warm
I love how even "London" sounds different depending on where you're from.
Manchester: "Lundun"
Liverpool: "Lundin."
In Thailand it's: "LOndOn" (like gone gone)
Scotland: "LOndin"
And even London you sometimes get: "Landan"

ha ha ha, excellent mate and very well put, but can you do "Saooouth Laooondoun"
Its close to cockney and ultimately has people having a "bubble"
I never forget one Afrikaan lady, unable to pronounce my name, she called me "fauuuuull" instead of Phil
Mind you my niece that hails from Yorkshire, always pronounced my named "fool" as a toddler ha ha
Bless her and clearly she is smart...

Liverpool trade unionist spokesman (write out "spokespersons" 100 times, boy!), who appear to be far more numerous than the people on whose behalf they are speaking, seem to me to be the only ones who insist on taking about where-kers instead of workers (or, phonetically, werkers).
They are also addicted to that daft phrase "...at this moment in time..." when they mean "now."
As you say, it's whiny and grating. My native South Yorkshire accent can be odd, but Liverpool...
