cyclist has been fined hundreds of dollars for using a mobile phone while riding his bike
A QUEENSLAND cyclist has been fined hundreds of dollars for using a mobile phone while riding his bike.
The cyclist was peddling to breakfast in Logan when police spotted him using the device on George St, Beenleigh, about 9am this morning.
Police issued the man with a $391 traffic infringement notice and three demerit points — the same penalty that applies to motorists caught using a phone behind the wheel.
Logan senior constable Jen Wallis said it was important that cyclists understood they are subject to the same laws as motorists.
“Using a mobile phone while riding a bicycle or even a horse is the same as using a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle,” Ms Wallis said.
“If you’re riding on a road or footpath you need to be 100 per cent focused on riding and not distracted by a mobile phone.
“Roads are shared with cars and footpaths are shared with other riders and pedestrians.
“There are even more rules for P1 and P2 drivers regarding the use of mobile phones while driving, including P1 drivers not using a mobile full-stop while driving — not even on hands-free.”

While I agree with cyclists ... the horse should really count as the 'driver' most of the time

Sounds fair, people using the roads should take care, and you cant take care whilst glued to a hand held device that dictates you concentrate on that and not your surroundings.
Maybe it should also apply to pedestrians crossing the roads....I see a lot of them with mobiles and earplugs in acting like bloody zombies because they cant see or hear whats going on around them.

Seeing as you can kill someone with a push bike, yeah, he deserves the fine.

That silly git of a cyclist got off relatively lightly...
Down here in NSW, they have just increased the penalty to 5 demerit points, and I think the fine's over $700 now..

To my mind, it's more than fair. I live in an area (Marin County) where tourists and day-trippers love to visit, a lot of them on bikes. Cyclists, compared to motorists, perceive themselves perennial victims, giving themselves a kind of moral high-ground, mostly undeserved. They become somewhat arrogant. This is just another area where they need to be reigned in.
That said, I also question the use of two-way radios on buses and police cars. They are equally a distraction. I sit on a transit board, and we we are confronted with firing drivers for being on cell phones, but the two-way radio is part of protocol. Wassup wi' that?

true BUT ...you can cause an accident by cycling into the path of an oncoming vehicle, causing THEM to swerve thus causing a fatality.....HoratioTarr wrote:Seeing as you can kill someone with a push bike, yeah, he deserves the fine.

I'm surprised that cyclists can get a signal for their phones with all the static that must be caused by Lycra-clad arses rubbing against saddles.

There are two main reasons that they won't register and tax pushies ==
* Such a road/weight tax would be "revenue negative" in operation -- costing more to collect and administer, than it could ever contribute towards road maintenance (cars cause proportionately far more damage, pollution, and fatalities, when compared to either cyclists or pedestrians); remembering that Bicycles only weigh around 12 -- 20 kgs, compared with 900 -->> 2000+ kgs for Cars, and a lot more again for trucks and buses;
* Placing a road usage/weight tax registration fee on bicycles, and/or a licence fee on 'cyclists, would prove to be both anti-social and anti-productive -- such a tax would be unfairly weighted against poorer people, the unemployed, school children, and inner-city commuters who have decided that bicycling is much more efficient than owning a car -- while at the same time being a major disincentive when trying to encourage more people to use bicycles more often in around congested city areas..
And imagine the furore if a largish family had to fork out for multiple licences and rego's every year; let alone the problems around licensing all of those young children in the first place; and then there's the problems of enforcing and policing such schemes.
