Manchester uni banns clapping...use jazz hands so as not to alarm the faint hearted.
First topic message reminder :
Words fail really.
"Clapping as been banned at a leading universty's students' union "to avoid triggering anxiety".
The University of Manchester Students' Union passed the resolution to ban clapping at student union events at the first Senate session of the academic year on September 27, according to student newspaper the Mancunion.
"It was argued that the loud noise of traditional clapping and whooping pose an issue to students with anxiety or sensory issues. BSL clapping – or, jazz hands – would be a more inclusive form of expression," the paper said.
Jazz hands is the British Sign Language for clapping."

What are they trained to do? Small wonder that they end up destitute. They don't fit in civilized society.
Some would say it's because of soldiers and people who fight for and defend not only their own but other countries, that so many of us do have the opportunity to live in a civilised society.

That's a double-edged sword. The same skills used to establish and maintain "civilized society" are the skills used to tear down the same. Remember, all wars start with an aggressor, not a defender.

I like you hate wars....such a waste of life, but sometimes people need to fight for their own and others countries, can you imagine how the world would be if they didnt?
But whether you agree with fighting or not, it isnt the soldiers who wage war on anyone is it, they are doing the tasks they are told to, often at the expense of their own lives and mental health.

It's the Tommy Atkins thing again, no one wants to know when there's peace but they are everyone's heroes when the fighting starts and someone has to do the dirty work.

I don't hate wars. And I don't disagree, sometimes people need to fight. But today, we have reached the point where wars are a pastime hobby. The US has really had but three serious occasions to go to war: Revolutionary war (1775), civil war (1861), and WWII (1939 - for us, 1941). Yet, we have had a war nearly every twenty years. Something is seriously wrong.
Defense, instead of protecting our borders, has come to mean working out mass personality disorders within us. We don't like Indians--go to war. We don't like Mexicans--go to war. We don't like Central Americans--start a war. We don't like Asians--go to war. We don't Muslims--start a war. Each time we are convinced we have a death struggle going on, and it turns out we are just adjusting our own psychosis.
There is need for a little common sense to be introduced into the melee. We seem to have become the problem, which originally, we went to war to correct. And we in America have a huge racial thing...we send our own police out to do genocide to people of color...a war, even, within. Charlottesville says it all.

Well I do agree, the USA does seem to be more war hungry than many other countries.

In the two world wars, many brave soldiers demobbed into civvy street, couldn't find work, especially with severe injuries, blind, no legs, etc, so they lived in the streets begging. Many sold their medals, some VC as they were so skint.
What a terrible indictment on our politicians that nothing has changed in a hundred years.

I do agree that disabled soldiers are as deserving of government support and care as anyone else...maybe more, because their disabilities are the result of someone's ego. But that is in the nature of looking after someone (anyone), not to glorify their deeds. No one should feel any pride as a result of what we did in Vietnam or Iraq.
I think WWI was largely an ego conflict. WWII, for the allies, was a real survival conflict. We've had no just cause for conflict since then, save the Falkland scrimmage for you guys. No one has threatened us...least of all the US.
BTW mage, isn't your avvie from Phillip Pullman's trilogy, His Dark Materials?
