A grizzly bear statue must be removed from a roadside because it could cause crashes, the Welsh government has told a town.

The 10ft wooden statue has guarded Britain's smallest town of Llanwrtyd Wells, population 850, for more than 15 years as a roadside landmark.

But safety chiefs demanded it be taken away from the Mid-Wales town after a woman feared the wooden animal was real - and she careered off the road into a signpost.

She complained to highways officials who ordered the bear away on health and safety grounds.

But locals are fighting the removal - with councillor Peter James saying: ""He has been an iconic gateway of the town for 15 or more years.

"I don't understand why he has to be moved now it's been in situ for years.

"We have pleaded with the Welsh Government to listen to us on road safety, but the Welsh Government seem to get things the wrong way round.

Sorry, but is it not possible, the bear had nothing to do with the accident and that the woman drive is simple using this as an excuse for her own mistake. Which led to her accident?

Seems convenient, espcially as she is a tourist from Canada.

Who knows, but I think its over the top to remove it based on one accident if true.

Its been there 15 years, and is this the only time there has been an accident?

What a Face

Where's the connection between a Grizzly and a town in Wales, anyway, that they saw fit to use a statue of one as a landmark  ???

Surely a sheep or a rabbit would be more fitting  ???
