First topic message reminder :

Why are families appearing to be struggling more now than they did in the 40's and 50's?

"Half of primary school teachers are giving out soap, washing powder and shampoo weekly to pupils from hard-up households, figures show.
As budgets tighten, struggling families are being forced to prioritise bills and food over hygiene essentials.
The study, for charity In Kind Direct, found a quarter of parents cannot afford basic cleaning products.
Nearly 20% admitted their child wears the same underwear for at least two days. A quarter use the same shirt for a week, and 3% go to school in the same clothes for at least a fortnight."

"Nicola Finney, 49, head of St Paul’s Church of England primary in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, has spent hundreds of pounds of her own cash helping families, buying a washing machine for one.
She said: “You used to have the odd child where you could see the family was struggling because of the way the uniform was kept. Now, it’s two or three in every class.
I talk to colleagues up and down the country, it’s happening everywhere.” Some 80% of primary teachers have seen an increase in unwashed pupils in the last five years.
A third have given out toothpaste, soap or toothbrushes. London was the worst-hit area, with half of teachers referring a family to a charity each week."

Speaking of the '50s, eddie and I were talking about that the other day. What was with the beehive hair style? And the cone-shaped bras?

Although we both agreed that the button-up cardigans were classy. I also liked the saddle shoes.

Did they have email in the '50s?

When I was little, like others, we didn't have a lot.

Cleanliness costs nothing. My dad also always polish our shoes every night. Our hair was clean as were our clothes.

Soap is so cheap as is toothpaste, so I'm not buying that people can't afford it. They can't be bothered. Many times I've seen obese people in dirty trackers, smoking, whilst their kids look like they could do with a bath and good meal.

Benefits are not spent on the kids but themselves.

Takes a special person to polish shoes.  I hate it.  I go to a shoeshine stand at lunch.  When I'm out of the City I wear sandals or deck shoes.

Slippery slope mate

A view that someone is sophistcated or stylish based on dress?

The former has no bases and the later is subjective

Why I dispair at the poor sterotypes people form

You rightly hate racism, which is based on superficial steroptypes and yet you just did the same, to claim cardigans are classy.

I thought you hated elitist class?

This is why actually many people no matter their beliefs or station, are in fact the same.

They elevate dress and looks to then qualfiy as to what looks superior/intelligent. Based on apperance.

We dont seem to have many shoe shiners here....not in Manchester anyway.
If the service is offered  and you hate the chore, why not employ someone else to do it.....I hope you leave them a good tip. Laughing

There you go

Am, I allowed an opinion or not Syl?

I thought this was an open forum for views and clearly, when some do not like my views they wish to silence me

I mean why can I not say what I think on things?

Would you rather I just simple conform to views, or actually create debate?

I am not preaching to anyone and the most ridiculous comments actually come from you and others trying to stiffle me doing so

How about you simple allow me to express my views?

Is that so wrong, no matter if you disagree?

No it's not wrong to voice your views on a forum Didge, but you dont allow other people the same courtesy....not without badgering them to death, followed by insults, followed by ill feeling.
Just stop picking  on what other people feel..... believe it or not, your way is not always the right way.

Where is the insults here?

There is none and thus you misdirect badly

There you go again telling me what to do

I never claimed my way is the right way but you just claimed yours is, by telling me and wrongly, I am picking on people by expressing a view

You see you are the problem here

I express a view and you treat me like some pariah.

If I say something that does not fit into your comfort zone you then have a go at me

The point is, I do not mind, and you have every right to express your views, but yet its always you and others trying to silence me and tell me to shut up

So if there is nothing wrong with me expressing my views, why are you jumping in trying to silence me?

You like many here have not a single clue about me and when I challenge any of you on anything. You get very defensive and try to silence me like you are doing now

I have every right to my views and if you believe that my views spoils a debate, because I disagree, what does that say about you?

That you clearly want people to agree with you

That is not the real world Syl

Its just another example about a preconcieved view you hold of me, when and only I say something negative

When I am positive you never make such views do you?

Which really translates as you trying to control me

Where you do not like being challenged

Which translates as

"I do not like you disagreeing with me Didge, so I will instead make up crap and lie about you, when you have opinions"

I never insulted you

You tried to tell me to shut up

Have a real long look in the mirror at who was badering who here

I hope you feel better, I seriously do, but dont play the poor victim card, when I did no wrong to you

You tried to silence me for my views, because you do not like them

I never stop you expressing your opinions and never will

Its hilarious that people are claiming to be put off and day in and day out they still post and then use me as an excuse to then berate me and claim they cannot post and yet still post.

Double standard

Is that not dishonesty at its best or even worse trying to use peer pressure to silence someone, who's views they do not like? I think this girlie group has to be the most manipulative and spiteful bunch of ladies I have ever met on a forum. They use every excuse to claim I stop a debate and yet constantly reply to me. They could of course ignore me, but use excuses as to why they fail in debates. They do it every time. They castigate me and I am happy that they do so, but it proves to me, how poor they are at debating. They pally up to each other for support

Come on ladies, give me a challenge???

Thanks

Ahh I see.......

So you want to control me to be a certain way to conform to your beliefs?

So if I express a belief about Islam as wrong and barbaric, would you have an issue?

You see what you do and what Syl does. You dont actually debate the points, but look arrogantly to castigate me

You are acting nothing more than a snowflake

Are you saying my views are so upsetting?

To say my views are aggressive, makes you the most pathetic snowflake going

You are not addressing a single point I make and looking to deligitimize me, Just as the far left constantly do and the worst part is. You do not realise you are doing so.

So point of order, what has you or Horatio questioned me on my views here?

Zero

You instead try to deligitmise me

Seriously, you are the most self proclaimed whingie ladies I have ever met

So what you and Syl and horatio are saying, is you do not like my views and either want to silence them or make piss poor excuses in not having to answer them

How about you grow up and actually stop using exuses for why you continually fail in debates?

If I am wrong, then you will stop blaming me and actually reply with reason and continue to do so, but you dont. You continually look to me to make excuses, why you cannot answer.

Stop being a fake victim, like the far left

Who said humans or the shoes were synthetic?

You see how people invent things to fit their world view Rags?

I would ask, why the need to polish any shoe

What class purpose does it serve?

Okay do you think shoes should be polished?

I don't mind either way. Synthetic shoes don't need to be polished. Leather shoes probably look better if they're polished.

Who said humans or the shoes were synthetic?

You see how people invent things to fit their world view Rags?

I would ask, why the need to polish any shoe

What class purpose does it serve?

You appear to be implying that someone did. Perhaps you need to rephrase the question.

Takes a special person to polish shoes.  I hate it.  I go to a shoeshine stand at lunch.  When I'm out of the City I wear sandals or deck shoes.
We dont seem to have many shoe shiners here....not in Manchester anyway.
If the service is offered  and you hate the chore, why not employ someone else to do it.....I hope you leave them a good tip. Laughing

Quite a few here.  They are well compensated, I believe.  They price themselves.  Tipping generally is around 20%, as per restaurants.

Nordstrom's has a program whereby you bring up to a half-dozen shoes, and leave them.  By the end of the day, they are shined.  Something like $1 per pair, but it's a paid employee.  It brings in sales business, I guess. So the store does it as a 'come-on'.

Anyway, polishing leather shoes makes them look nicer, and it also protects against rain. You don't need to polish synthetic leather as it doesn't absorb rain or lose it's shine anyway.

I agree. I really, really like cleaned and shined shoes. In fact, dirty ones ruin the whole look.

I don't mind paying for it...I just don't like doing it. It's like dusting...I was an asthmatic kid, so anytime around dust is awful. There might be something like that with shining shoes.

That seems fair enough to me, and if people can make a living out of cleaning shoes, good luck to them.

I'm lost.

All this cos I mentioned polished shoes. Only you Didge can have a debate about them.

To answer your question, there is no class, its down to the individual of any class if they want to polish shoes.

I'm outta here in case you want a debate about which colour shoes are polished.
