All war plans are probably reckless, they certainly are when they fail. When they work, a word something like a brilliant stratergy would be used.

There are some timeless rules:

1. Control the high ground;
2. Shoot further and straighter.
3. Always have a bastion (or a big rock);
4. Be agile;
5. Have an escape.

The D-Day invasion was a reckless failure that ultimately helped end the war but with horrific unnecessary casualties due to bureaucratic blunders and poor leadership at the top. Thousands died needlessly that day. If the upper brass weren't so stupid and had done theirs jobs most of the troops would not have died in vain on the beaches of Normandy.

As usual if everything had come together in the Market Garden expedition or other events had intervened on the right side, it would have been called a triumph and audacious planning. Things rarely go as planned, maybe because the opposition isn't in on it, it would be easy if the enemy stuck to your plan.
