IT'S COME TO THIS: Parkland Shooting Survivors Now Required to Wear Clear Backpacks to School
When students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return from spring break next week, they'll notice stiffer security measures around campus. And they'll all be sporting clear backpacks. Robert W. Runcie, the superintendent of Florida's Broward County Public Schools, penned a letter to the Parkland students and families on Wednesday, announcing the new measures.
Students at the high school—where 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz allegedly killed 17 people last month—will now be required to wear clear backpacks, a step administrators hope will ward off the threat of firearms and illegal weapons on campus.
Identification cards will also be issued to students and staff members to wear at all times. In addition, the district is mulling the possibility of using metal-detecting wands and later installing permanent metal detectors, The New York Times reported.
Runcie, who advocated last month for a metal-detector-free district is now considering installing them, according to the Times. In an interview last month, he said that metal detectors create an unwelcoming learning environment and pose organizational challenges in a school with nearly 3,200 students.
He also questioned their efficacy.
“Someone is not going to go through a metal detector with an AR-15,” Runcie told the newspaper.

Re: IT'S COME TO THIS: Parkland Shooting Survivors Now Required to Wear Clear Backpacks to School
I can imagine a lot of people deserting that school district over the next couple of years -- ignore the underlying problems; punish the innocent (potential) victims further instead !!!
Fucking clueless idiot politicians in Florida -- America's rancid arsehole..
(Totally ignoring the simple fact also, that their shooter was an ex-student, meaning that these added measures would not have made any difference, anyway..).
And "clear backpacks" !?! As if that will work ! Making their daypacks out of clear plastic is a plain stupid idea -- they will simply fall apart within a few weeks, from being opened and knocked around a few times each day. And then there's the added effect of strong sunlight across the southern states of the USA, meaning that more expensive 'UV stabilised' clear vinyls will be required, making suitable 'packs even more costly for their parents..

Clear backpacks have been a rule at a lot of high schools around the country -- along with random locker searches, having to turn out your pockets on demand, etc.
I hate it -- people, no matter what age, in a democracy should not have to live like they're in a police state.
