It’s a very subtle manipulation. Many people say it takes years to get out of the gaslighter’s control.
It can almost make the one being gaslighted think they have gone slightly crazy, making them think their reality isn’t the real reality.

I wonder if the term .Gaslighting' is in homage to the 1940's film 'Gaslight' starring Angela Lansbury I think.
A husband tried to drive his wife mad by playing subtle and nasty tricks on her whilst pretending to adore her.

Interesting, I have never heard of the term being used in a modern way before.

It’s extremely common. Many people don’t know they’re being gaslighted until they read up on it.
