Its utterly pathetic the way police, governments and authorities bury their heads in the sand when events like this occur.
No wonder some people think they can make their own laws and get away with anything they like.
This paragraph sums it up nicely.
"The Department for Education allows schools to set their own uniform policy and yet, instead of speaking up for the beleaguered head, there has been a deafening silence from its officials. Meanwhile, conservative voices within the Muslim community have exploited the situation to shut down debate and traduce her good name."

As an individual with little or no official backing she would ignore certain minorities at her peril, when the race card and the religion card is produced in this country, everybody ends up backing down, because they are so scared of the hysterical consequences from the yelling and foot stamping (at least) said minorities.

I know, but I do wish that someone would just tell the complainers to eff off or something. It takes courage to stand up for yourself sometimes, but giving in to these people just encourages them.

Some powerful people were complaining, harassing and bullying her.
She shouldn't have had to deal with them on her own.
Where were the police, the school governors, the local counsellors?
Hiding and looking the other way...cases like this make me sick.

Religious tolerance should never mean that a cultuiral/religious custom outweighs uk law/custom in any shape way or form. Hijabs should not be worn in schools or by anyone under 16 years old.
There should be no special treatment for burials of Jews or Muslims (its a custom of hygiene for these particular hot countries and makes sense if no enquiry isn't needed, no halal/kosher slaughter. If you decide to move to a country with a very different culture to your own, you adapt to that culture, many Muslim women manage to remain modest with western clothes, I doubt anyone would expect them to wear revealing outfits, many British women dress modestly. If an adult woman wishes to wear a headscarf why not but the all over covering is rare or used to be rare in the Muslim world generally used in desert communities but has spread with the politics. If you check out Muslim communities when photography was first available and up to the 70's, very few women covered their faces and generally wore colourful regional costumes of various kinds, baggy leggings and blouses in some of the middle east and parts of eastern Europe, Long dresses with top and shoulders with colourful embroidery and scarfs wrapped around the head to cover the hair only, shalwa kames in India/Pakistan with a scarf worn on the shoulders which could be pulled up to cover the head when required, not much of this tight fitting bandage around your head and face.
