First topic message reminder :

Engagement photos of Harry and Meghan have been released.
They look very happy and she looks beautiful in a designer dress, it's really nice, very high end, but hold on....HOW MUCH?? Shocked

"Meghan Markle knew all eyes were going to be on her when she and Prince Harry released their engagement photos today.
And the bride-to-be certainly didn't shy a way from making a statement when it came to her dress.
The 36-year-old looked red carpet ready in a glittering couture gown by British label Ralph & Russo. The handmade creation would have taken thousands of hours to make and is estimated to cost £56,000. Kensington Palace confirmed the gown was 'privately purchased'.
From the autumn/winter '16 collection, the floor-length black tulle gown features a silk organza skirt, hand appliquéd with silk tulle ruffles, and an entirely sheer bodice decorated with intricate gold feather thread-work.
Meghan's decision to wear a gown by the London-based designer for such a high profile occasion shows her commitment to supporting British fashion in her new role as a member of the Royal Family. "

I'd rather spicy rice than boiled rice if I had to eat only one of them for the rest of my life.

I wasn’t referring to Koo. She was lovely and Andrew should have been allowed to marry her.

Well you’re not William are you? If he’s in love and happy and likes her the way she is then yay. And we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. And quite frankly I’m happy with that. The obsessive need to know everything about everyone in the public eye and their private doings is a bit weird for me. Hats off to the royals though because every single minute outside your front door and they are picked apart and the most absolute rubbish or lies is sent around the world in seconds.

Exactly, so there's not much chance of him ever being King. Why do "royals" feel the need to spend so much money, even if it's their own?

Well that’s just it. It’s their own money. I don’t care what they do with it’s it like they don’t care what I do with mine. They’re are damned either way no matter what they do, I’m all for letting them get in with it. They don’t have to justify anything to me nor I them.

Who know maybe one day she’ll auction it off and give the money to charity.

Yes it was a huge amount but we don’t live at their level and who knows? If I had that kind of money maybe I would buy a beautiful extravagant dress for my engagement photos.

Who did you mean Cass?

The rest of your post I agree with...I think anyone in the public eye who is hounded 24/7 must feel threatened.
Its well documented about how Diana was treated, and even though the press and the palace said they had learned from the mistakes they made with her it doesn't seem to be that much better even now....social media has a lot to answer for.

The engagement pictures are different, they were posed and gladly given not taken.

Royalty or celeb I reckon they should only be photographed or followed by the press while on public duties or ocassions.
While going about privately they should be left alone, unless they are doing something illegal. Hopefully that would keep most of them out of the papaers and off the tv for trivial rubbish, with any luck we'd never see the Kardashians again.

Mrs. 45

They have to give them and sit for interviews or pose a couple of times a year so that in the main, the press will leave them alone. That’s the agreement anyway. But it gets broken constantly by the press. They are a commodity not humans. There literally is a price in their heads.

Yes, but do we need this country to be represented by people who think that spending a fortune on a frock is so important? Aren't there more important things they should be thinking about? The "royals" are just people who happen to be revered for some weird reason, so they might as well do something to impress everyone.

They could indeed but that wouldn’t change a thing because of who their families are. They will never be left alone. As well as being born to money (which isn’t their fault), they also do a huge amount of charity work both in the UK and around the world. Both William and Harry served their country. They pay taxes.

I like some posh places. I have even saved to go there. Doesn’t bother me that they have more than I ever will. It’s just how things are. I’m lucky in what I have. But I’m never jealous of those who have more than me. It’s only you yourself that you upset by being jealous.

Oh it has Syl but not by you. Every person deserves to have a big blow out on an outfit, especially if it’s an engagement photo. It’s her day. Why does she have to justify it even if she becomes a spokesperson for a charity? One expensive dress isn’t the end of the world. Again it’s her money and her special time. I don’t see her telling others how to live or how much to spend. I’m sure in her day to day dress she will be sensible and be like Catherine and buy off the peg and recycle the outfits (upon which people will moan their heads off). She chose a British designer. It or versions like it will sell like hot cakes just like anything Catherine or Charlotte or George wears. All good for the British economy. The huge amount of tat and souvenirs sold all bring my net into the treasury.

They Had the photographs taken in Britain. It’s not even been a month so she should be given a chance. She’s never been OTT but rather private and restrained in her celebrity. I’m sure mistakes along the way will be made, but she’s human not a robot. The British press doing what it does best. Build someone up and then cackle with glee tearing them
down the next day.

As to Harry leaving? Why the hell should he? He was born here. He didn’t magically arrange to be born royal. No great expectation? Yeah serving your country in a battle zone twice just doesn’t meet expectations. Being a search and rescue pilot isn’t having a job is it, it’s mostly leisure. And let’s not forget about Invictus and how he’s helping wounded armed forces personnel along with all the other great charity work the family does.

By the way, it still cost the British taxpayer each about 65p a year that goes to the Monarchy. If you had a president or other type of leader you would still be paying for it and more than likely a lot more. So I think the Queen and all of them are jolly good value.

Anyway I’m off to get ready for work. Lucky that it’s my last day till next Thursday and it’s a short one but it’s kids holiday party so I’ll be worn out. Bright side is we are decorating cookies! Have a good rest of your day x

I meant no one has said bad things about her on this thread about the dress.
I know she has had some nasty things said about her elsewhere, the press do like to knock people down its true, happily she has had more positive publicity than negative so far.
Most of the derogatory stuff I have read online has been sheer nastiness and halve truths....I suspect jealousy is at the bottom of a lot of the bad press she has received.

I don't think most people expect her to nip into M&S for her dresses....but sorry, £56 THOUSAND POUNDS for a dress is just obscene no matter who you are or for what occasion its bought for..... So I think we are going to have agree to disagree on that point. Cool

Harry wont leave, it was an interview he gave that the link was referring too...he said none of the royal family would hold the positions they hold if they had a choice....something like that.
He is open like his mum, no doubt he felt like that at the time, but as he is for many people the most popular member of the royal family I doubt he will ever leave.....hopefully not anyway.

Hope you had a good day at work, I did last minute food shop...and now what isn't bought we will go without. x

It was good thanks. 8 kids and a couple of adults. Everyone had fun making the ornaments and decorating cookies. Up early this morning to the shops and I’m DONE! Well apart from baking and cooking. Agree what I don’t have it doesn’t matter x

You're projecting if you think I'm jealous. I wouldn't want that kind of lifestyle, and I wouldn't spend silly money on a frock even if I could afford it. It's all so shallow. These young "royals" - they're even more like cardboard cut-outs than the older lot.

I thought you meant in the royal family.

Ahh Malania, i have quite a soft spot for her...and no matter how she rose to fame, she has certainly paid her dues being shackled to her oafish husband, whom she seems quite afraid of..

Since when are you against the rich flashing their money around?  That seems incongruent with your property rights over life thesis that you give us every time there is some sort of demonstration.  I mean if you own a dress, fook...wear it.

If you look at the royals anthropologically, you ask how did people ever come to revere a family so, especially a German family, FCS? Shocked  Whatever the answer, you realize that it's not the royals that are doing anything, but the people of England who continue the pageant (certainly not the Scots, Welsh, or god forbid, the Irish).  Maybe you oppose drinking tea, or eating cucumber sandwiches...but whatta ya gonna do?  The people are still gonna do it.

Since when have you been so supportive of the rich flashing their money around, especially on frocks? You don't even think that someone who saved up to buy a car should prize it, and that it doesn't matter if someone sets it on fire.

I am indifferent. I was, however, a bit surprised that you took such a strong stand against people, property, and conspicuous consumption, since that is the endgame of capitalist-consumerism.

Perhaps that's because some of you only see people in terms of the labels that you choose to stick on them?

As I say, I'm indifferent.  But property is property, whether it's a gown or a vehicle.  It seems a contradiction to be so obsessive about a vehicle, yet be so dismissive of one's clothing.

If she's got the money, let her drive the car or wear the gown.  It's her business.

There is a further problem there...

Nobody actually knows how much Meghan spent on her clothes;
Nor how much she donates to charites;
(Except for her accountant and the taxman...).

So much of peoples' opinion on this thread is pure speculation..

Fueled by gossip reporters who know no more, really, than the rest of us.
