Anorexic mother-of-four is found dead in her freezing cold flat wearing a hat and scarf after 'her benefits were cut when she was too ill to attend a meeting - leaving her unable to afford the heating'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5063075/Mother-dead-Universal-Credit-cut.html
An anorexic mother-of-four died wearing a scarf and coat inside her freezing home after her benefits was cut when she was too ill to attend a meeting, according to her grieving family.
Elaine Morrall passed away in her house in Runcorn, Cheshire, and her mother claims her financial woes meant she switched the heating off until her children got home from school.
A cause of death has not been revealed for the 38-year-old, who suffered from an eating disorder and mental health problems.
In recent days, a fundraising campaign has been launched to raise money for her devastated four children.
Elaine's mum, Linda, sent a raging and 'broken-hearted' letter to her local councillor in Halton.
In in an open letter on Facebook, she wrote: 'How many people have got to die before this government realises they are killing vulnerable people?'
Her plea has gone viral on social media.
Linda said: 'My daughter lived in Boston Ave. She died on the afternoon of 2 November, 2017 at home on her own. She was 38yrs.
'In the cold with her coat & scarf on. Because she wouldn't put her heating on until her kids came home from school. Why?? Because she couldn't afford it.
'Because she was severely depressed. Suffered from eating disorder & many other problems for many years.
Mainly due to authoritarians of one form or another. I can give you details. Was in & out of hospital in recent months in intensive care.
'But was deemed not ill enough for ESA [Employment and Support Allowance]. Had her benefits stopped numerous times, which in turn stopped her housing benefit.
'No income but expected to be able to pay full rent. Was told being in intensive care was not sufficient reason for failing to attend a universal credit interview.
'I went to the job centre to inform them that she couldn't attend. But benefits stopped again.
'Uncaring housing taking her to court. She's due to go to court on Monday.
'Is being dead now enough reason? Is that what's had to happen to prove she was ill?
'How many people have got to die before this government realises they are killing vulnerable people??
'What are you and your fellow councillors going to do to protect your constituents?'
Halton MP Derek Twigg, who is now working with the family, said: 'It is a very tragic case and I am providing assistance to my constituent.'
A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: 'Our thoughts are with Ms Morrall's family at this difficult time.

My heart sank when I read this. What is wrong with this country? I know more than one person on benefits due to ill health who have had those benefits cut due to the new PIP directive.

Their thoughts don’t help the lady now that she’s dead. Will they help her children? Murderous asshats.

What happened to her kids, were they their? If she was cold, they must be also. Something don't ring right here.

The information in the press seems to have come purely from the mother's account on Facebook.

How can she put it on FB if she's dead oh do you mean the women's mum.
If her mum knew why not help her, what about her kids, just don't seem right this.

She probably died from her anorexia, or related health problems but that's not the point. She shouldn't have had to live with no heating when she's clearly not well.

What a crock of shit.
She died because of her eating disorder, she didn't freeze to death
Nothing to do with cutting benefits

The emphasis is on the fact her benefits were cut because she was too ill to attend a meeting with people who probably don't know their arse from their elbow yet are in charge of whether someone gets help or not.

Exactly and she could have died of hypothermia even if it wasn't extremely cold, she didn't have the heating on to save money and:
Other factors that may exacerbate the risk of hypothermia include hypoglycaemia, hypothyroidism, extremes of age, smoking, substance abuse, trauma, being underweight, heart or circulatory disorders, hunger, dehydration, fatigue, physical exertion and anorexia nervosa.
The symptoms can progress slowly and the person may be unaware of the significance of what is occurring. Shivering; confusion; poor coordination; slow, laboured movement or stumbling; difficulty speaking; slowed thinking and problems with recall are all possible symptoms, which may sometimes be mistaken for being intoxicated.

Seems, from what I see around me, in the main, the people who deserve help don't get it and those that are 'swinging the lead' or over emphasing a condition get money to make your eyes water. I know hard workers on low pay that are struggling badly and are harrassed and chased for any over payment little or large and then there are people who do everything (walking etc) quite normally, but 'can't' work, who get the kind of money each week that you'd need a pretty good job to bring home - after tax.
One man told us, when asked how he managed to get on the top rate that he was a good actor, another spends most of his money on gambling and moaned beacuse he had to put up with having his house fitted with thermal lagging for free plus a new kitchen and bathroom because he is too disabled to work, although he can do anything and everything whenever he likes. Then there's the man who quite happily paints the outside of his and other peoples houses yet is too ill to work and the woman who manhandled a large mobility scooter over a mound and carried it over the pavement onto the road (short cut) then jumped on it and happily drove it to the shops, I've seen her driving it around previously and using elbow crutches, yet regularly leaves them in the club after a night out and walks home. There is something very wrong with the system.

Her mother said that the Government was killing people. If she died of health problems, that's not the fault of the Government.

Actually it is, because people with health problems like her have their illnessess made even worse when their benefits are stopped (because she couldn't get to a meeting WHEN SHE WAS IN INTENSIVE CARE) and they have the extra stress of not being able to pay the rent, not being able to eat properly even if it is part of their recovery and can't have the bloody heating on even if their bodies can't keep them warm naturally. If it was one or two cases, that's a mistake, 100s of cases every month is quite obviously, policy and they should be done for manslaughter at least.

It all depends on why she died. To me, the question is - why was she not getting better from the anorexia? Why was she in intensive care? If it was because of the anorexia, why was she allowed to just go home? I know someone with anorexia, although I'm not sure which type it is, and nobody seems to do much about it.

The article didn't state the actual cause of death, but her mum says...'she was severely depressed. Suffered from eating disorder & many other problems for many years.
She also says her daughter was in and out of hospital in recent months in intensive care.
Sounds like anorexia was just one of the medical conditions she suffered from, but its clear she was ill both physically and mentally and vulnerable.
NO ONES benefits should be stopped because they are too ill to attend a meeting, especially when the job centre had been told of the circumstances.

Intensive care suggests some kind of very serious illness, but it's not clear what that was.

No, but living in poverty, and the stress of that, is a killer in itself. In an already weakened body, it could well have hastened her death.

I think the main point is that they cancelled her benefits while she was in hospital in the intensive care unit and couldn’t attend their appointment.

I'd like to see another source for this tragedy. All there is to go on is her mother's account of it.

Maybe no one else thought she was worth writing about.
The old, ill, vulnerable and abused are often ignored till a tragedy happens and someone actually speaks out for them, sadly too late.

Ooops, I gave a reputation point by mistake on your post...no matter though, you make plenty others that I agree with.
Yes, no doubt if the family make enough noise the police or benefits department in that area will comment.
Till then she is just another statistic.

If only you were right about that. Reports have been done showing the number of people who have died or committed suicide after being sanctioned and in order to see them, the Government and the DWP have been taken to court. They fight it every step of the way. If the numbers were out there freely there would be riots in the streets.

Nothing surprises me, well the fact that they have even been taken to court in the first place does actually.
Reading (and to some extent seeing) the way the old and vulnerable are treated in their own homes and also in care homes, the sexual abuse of children and youngsters that seems to thrive even now, and seeing how so many people keep quiet for years or are gagged when they do speak out, is pretty sickening in a supposedly modern wealthy country.

I have to ask
Where was her family to care for her?
Knowing she suffered this disorder?
Lets put it this way.
If we were not a wealthy nation, would not like in other places around the world, would not the family be there for her and this would never have happened?
Its all well and good blaming the authorities, but to me those family have also failed her.
Seriously, where were they?

I do see that point.
I hate the way sometimes families blame everyone but themselves. Not long ago family members were blaming authorities because their mother had lay dead for days in her home.....where were they?
In this case the lady who died had been in and out of intensive care, suffered from physical and mental disorders, she hadn't been ignored by her family, she hadn't died and been ignored by them, they were obviously in touch with the daughter all the time, her mum offered to stand in for her at a meeting with the benefits office and was refused permission, even though the daughter was too ill to attend.
The benefits were cut because of that...they are the ones responsible for not giving her the support she needed.
We have social care in this country, passing the buck when they fail doesn't help.

I agree it was wrong to cut the benefits syl, but this is where until such matters are resolved, this is where family should step in.
When my brother was Palliative, we took it in turns to go to Ireland to be with him around the clock and help pay for all his needs. We put his needs first as he needed our help.
So why did not the family step in and offer finnancial suuport? Why not offer to help pay the bills?
This is why its wrong that people rely on social support, as we expect it, when we never should do. Family should help their brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, fathers, Mothers etc, when they need help. Hence its no good blaiming the authorities after such an event, when they could have well helped here.
So the mum offered to stand in at meetings?
Where was the finnancial support and if not why not ask her and her children to come and stay until this is resolved. Sadly the daughter choose to turn off the heating in order to have money to feed her children. Which should never have happened? Did the family know she was doing this? If they did, then they are also to blame for then not stepping into help. If they did not know, how is anyone to blame? She made a decision that we have no idea that it even cost her this life? Was it actually her disorder?
People react to a story and never question many aspects, they react emotively. It maybe that her death had nothing to do with the decisions even made.

Ooops, I gave a reputation point by mistake on your post...no matter though, you make plenty others that I agree with.
Yes, no doubt if the family make enough noise the police or benefits department in that area will comment.
Till then she is just another statistic.
The trouble is that with this kind of incident there's a news report at first and then we don't hear anything more about it. That applies to a lot of events which are in the papers.
There's more to this than the benefits issue. If the lady had been in and out of hospital, and in intensive care, clearly there's something there which is of concern, particularly if it's to do with anorexia nervosa or depression. These are illnesses which are difficult to treat in some people, but perhaps more resources should be available.

Patients with advanced anorexia are just skin and bones, no body fat to keep them warm, they need a coat & scarf even in a hot room!

Anorexia is such a crippling psychiatric disease.
With such SERIOUS physical consequences too.
It kills the sufferers in various ways.
Some die suddenly like cot death babies, their heart lose so much muscle that it malfunctions.
Or their natural immunity is screwed and they succumb to infection.
Poor lady!

If her benefits had not so cruelly been stopped the outcome could have been so different.
No one can attend a meeting when when they are in intensive care.
Families should always help when they can, but we dont know the circumstances.....this lady had lots of problems, she obviouly needed more help than the family alone could give.

You have as much idea as anyone else here why or how she died Tommy.
The only info the police have released is that there are no suspicious circumstances.

The fact of the matter is she died in a freezing cold house.
In a first world country.
Yet we seem to always find millions for wars.
That’s the saddest part of all this.

I hope we get to hear the outcome of the investigation. I do find it hard to believe that her mother would be told that being in intensive care was not a good enough reason to miss an appointment.

https://evolvepolitics.com/disabled-womans-benefits-stopped-ten-months-failed-attend-interview-cancelled-dwp/Disabled woman’s benefits stopped for 10 months after missing interview DWP had CANCELLED
A 63 year old woman with several serious medical conditions had her benefits stopped for ten months after she failed to turn up for an assessment which she had been told was cancelled.
Teresa Geale, from Kent, was already on the bus to the assessment when she received a voicemail message telling her that the assessment centre was running late and her appointment would have to be rescheduled.
She went home, but a few days later received a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) demanding to know why she hadn’t attended the appointment.
Despite explaining that her appointment had been cancelled, she was told that because she had missed the appointment ‘without good reason’.
As a consequence, her Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) was being stopped.
‘Shocking’ case of disabled woman trapped in care home that wants to evict her
A young disabled woman has been unable to leave a residential home for nearly three weeks because its managers are trying to evict her for complaining about her care, and for her attempts to enjoy a proper social life.
Lakhvinder Kaur (pictured), who has spinal muscular atrophy, says she has been “fighting non-stop” for seven years to secure a proper care package that will keep her safe, and allow her to live in her own home, manage her own support, and enjoy the typical social life of a young woman in her 20s.
Instead, she has had to move from one inappropriate care home and supported living setting to another since she turned 21.
Her current care home has raised objections to her organising birthday parties, and occasionally inviting friends over for late-night drinks.
It has also objected to the 28-year-old’s demands that she be supported by female staff who are properly trained to assist with her personal care needs.
Because she has nowhere else to go, and fears moving to another care home that she believes is unsafe for her – which her council insists is suitable – Kaur is refusing to leave the building.
Managers at the home say they will change the security code on the entrance if she leaves the building, and have already tried twice – unsuccessfully – to persuade the police to evict her.
The care home’s threat – and her lack of a support package – means she is unable to attend the funeral of her cousin, who died last week in Wales.
She has also now been told that staff will only provide her with reheated frozen food – which puts her health at risk – until she leaves.
Kaur says the forced move to a second care home would put her social life, her job – and her life – at risk.
She is being supported by the disabled women’s collective Sisters of Frida and two of its co-founders, Michelle Daley and Eleanor Lisney.
They say her “shocking” story “raises serious questions about not just the quality and services of many care homes across the country – particularly for people who are scared to speak out about their conditions – but about how their customers are respected and valued”.
All she wants, she says, is to live in her own home with her own tenancy, with a package of direct payments that reflects her significant support needs and allows her to employ and manage her own well-trained support staff.
But she is now being forced to move to yet another care home, one she believes is so inaccessible that it puts her safety at risk, and even though its managers have said they do not believe they can meet her high support needs.

What worries me, is with all the information out there (try reading Disability News https://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/category/disability-benefits/) people still don't understand that this is happening every day.

I don't understand that last story. She won't leave the building but she has a job. She can't go on annual leave for ever surely. Is her care at the home being paid for? The home has to have some rules, and having parties until 4am is probably a bit difficult for them.
What does she want exactly?

I do believe that benefits are being cut drastically for many really vulnerable people. If you are you ill and cant work, yet still have to pay full rent and all the other bills because all benefits have been withdrawn, no wonder people who are on the edge are tipped over.
