Genes for Skin Color Rebut Dated Notions of Race, Researchers Say Empty Genes for Skin Color Rebut Dated Notions of Race, Researchers Say

For centuries, skin color has held powerful social meaning — a defining characteristic of race, and a starting point for racism.

“If you ask somebody on the street, ‘What are the main differences between races?,’ they’re going to say skin color,” said Sarah A. Tishkoff, a geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania. On Thursday, Dr. Tishkoff and her colleagues showed this to be a profound error. In the journal Science, the researchers published the first large-scale study of the genetics of skin color in Africans.

The researchers pinpointed eight genetic variants in four narrow regions of the human genome that strongly influence pigmentation — some making skin darker, and others making it lighter.

These genes are shared across the globe, it turns out; one of them, for example, lightens skin in both Europeans and hunter-gatherers in Botswana. The gene variants were present in humanity’s distant ancestors, even before our species evolved in Africa 300,000 years ago.

Idea

Under the rules of Taxonomy (the means by which Biologists divide living organisms into hierarchical ranks :  Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.. )  there are NO such divisions as "races" in this lineup...

Race is a sub-division of Species used in the classification of certain lower Classes of animals, such as within certain Families of insects and spiders --  It simply doesn't apply to mammals, certainly not to tne "higher" species such as primates (including man), whales and dolphins, horses and cows, cats and dogs.

From a purely scientific viewpoint, any differences in group/population skin, hair and eye colours due mainly to geographical isolation over thousands of years, might be termed as a 'varietal' difference within the same Species.

The whole misuse of the term "Races" for various geographical populations of mankind has zero scientific validity --  dating back to when various colonial powers, and their compliant churches, wanted to artificially divide populations in order to "legally" invade countries, disenfranchise populations, rob them blind, enslave them, even commit genocide..
