Flood pirates using boats to take advantage of British weather victims
Sneaky thieves are believed to be using boats to steal from evacuated homes swamped by flooding.
Police have begun overnight helicopter patrols to protect families from pirates exploiting the fact large parts of Somerset have been cut off for nearly five weeks.
Dad-of-three James Winslade was left without heating or hot water after 600 gallons of oil was siphoned from a tank on his farm, marooned since January 1.
James, 40, of West Yeo, said: “We’re getting so many flooding tourists and sightseers coming down here that it’s hard to keep track of who’s around. At night it’s very isolated. They are coming across the water on boats to get to empty homes.”
Even emergency rescue workers have been targeted. Two quad bikes used by firefighters were stolen from a village hall converted into a flood zone HQ.
Mounted police were yesterday patrolling the isolated flood-hit area, which covers 25 square miles, and a police helicopter carried out two night-time flights.
Chief Supt Caroline Peters, of Avon and Somerset police, said: “We are aware of reports of suspicious people and vehicles in the area after dark. We’ve also heard rumours of people out in boats at night.”

It's bad enough that people are having to suffer the misery of their homes being flooded and some of their personal belongings destroyed but having what remains of their possessions being plundered as well by whatever means is just absolutely disgusting.

How on earth can 600 gallons of domestic heating oil be stolen without the help of a tanker ?

I wondered about that myself, if a gallon of water weighs 10 pounds, would gallon of oil weigh more ?If it was the same weight as water 600gals would weigh 6000 pounds, how would they carry that away>

And without being heard or seen............Seems a little improbable to me but it has got the attention of the media. I have no doubt though that other properties have been targeted and goods removed

The article says it was syphoned off, which is silent, and a cylinder with approx a 4 1/4' diameter and 5 1/2' height hold about 600 gallons, which they would find very easy to transport by boat, the floods being so high.

a gallon of water weighs 10lbs.oil could weigh more, 600gallons=6000 pounds.you'd need avery large boat.

Because of it's density, oil weighs between 6 - 8lbs per gallon (depending on the type of oil), so 600 gallons could weigh as little as 3,600lbs. If the tank they used was not cylindrical but had a wider base and flatter, that would distribute the weight over a much larger area of the boat, and wouldn't be a problem.

full oil containers float because oil is lighter than water
wouldn't even need to put them in a boat just tie them to the side once you get them to dry land whack on the back of a truck.

scum bags, profiting of other peoples misery, why didn't they just become politicians instead of thieves and do it legally.
