Red sun phenomenon 'caused by Hurricane Ophelia'
First topic message reminder :
Wow. I don't know if you're all seeing this wherever you are in England, but the sun has turned a phenomenal colour today and the day has turned a deep golden yellow.
Apparently it's caused by the hurricane that's about to hit ireland.
I hope our Irish neighbour's stay safe.
An "unusual" reddish sky and red-looking sun have been reported across parts of England.
The phenomenon has been seen in the South West, the Midlands, North West and North East.
BBC weather presenter Simon King said it was due to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara.
He added that debris from forest fires in Portugal and Spain was also playing a part.
The dust has caused shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red.
He said: "Ophelia originated in the Azores where it was a hurricane and as it tracked its way northwards it dragged in tropical air from the Sahara."
This meant dust from the Sahara was brought with it, he said.
"The dust gets picked up into the air and goes high up into the atmosphere, and that dust has been dragged high up in the atmosphere above the UK," Mr King explained.
The particles in the air cause blue light to scatter, leaving longer-wavelength red light to shine through.
The Met Office said the "vast majority" of the dust was as a result of forest fires in Iberia, which have sent debris into the air and that has been dragged north by Ophelia.

No I hated it too. It scared me, it was just wayyy to spooky for my liking
@eddie my sister found it beautiful too!
I dont think lots of people even noticed it.
We were driving along and it was still this great big orangey red orb in the sky...I wanted to wind the window down and shout at people to look up...they were missing this amazing spectacle.
I didn't though.

It went very quiet, birds stopped singing, everything went still, it was like the calm before the storm, eerie.

Saw a similar event down here, back in 2009...
I had an hour-long drive home from work through those conditions that day..
It looks redder than that Irish storm today, because of the red sandy soils out around Broken Hill, that eventually were dumped out over New Zealand.
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/4182716/remember-the-2009-dust-storm/?cs=310
The following video shows the sand/dust storm over Sydney -- the caption is somewhat misleading, though -- as that storm spread for a few hundred miles that day, north and south from Sydney..
https://youtu.be/WQdZFllbNX4
(I've also witnessed "Bushfire skies" down here, where ash and smoke will change the colour of the sky to a kind of 'burnt orange' colour -- but they tend to be more localised and shorter-lived..).

Sexy M, dont you notice the number of people walking along with heads down eyes glued to their mobiles, they don't even see cars when they step into the road, so not much chance of them seeing the sun,

And don't get me started on women (usually) who push their prams into the road first whilst glued to mobiles....probably working on the theory if its safe for the baby they will be OK too.
Anyway...bot, the sky is boringly clear today.

Some perverted fuckwitted Floptard is now 'redding' some of my posts at random...
At least three times in the last few days, some loser has "redded" posts that were in no way abusive or insulting towards anyone..

I don't find them offensive, probably because I don't read most of them.
It does amuse me though when I see a perfectly innocent post redded.....unless its an accident it must be someone with a grudge, so they just log in and red the first post they see that the person they don't like has written.

It was the 30th anniversary of Michael Fish's incredible gaffe. Nature did something special to commemorate the anniversary lol. I reckon the red glow in the sky and landscape matched the red glow of embarrassment on his face at the time.

Re: Red sun phenomenon 'caused by Hurricane Ophelia'
i stayed in that day, i looked out the window and saw the colours and thought it weird. then my daughter went to the shop and when she got back she said ''mum, you have to come and see this''. We stood outside gawping at the sky for about 10 minutes or so. she said it felt like the calm before the storm,,,no birds anywhere,,,no sound just this eerie, oppressive but strangely beautiful atmosphere.
we then went indoors and about 20 minutes later my son rang me on his way from work about 1.30 saying ''mum have you been outside today? you have to see this, it's so weird''
then it started to get a bit blowy but the colours continued right up to sunset time although they faded out.
I've always disliked the overuse of awesome to describe an outfit or ice cream or some such nonsense, but when it comes to nature, it truly can be awesome to witness
I loved it

It went dark with us for about three hours, it was very cloudy and I didn't see the sun, as you say the quiet and the atmosphere were amazing. After about three hours it lightened up so much that the birds started singing again like the dawn chorus.

It's not that bad here yet but I did have to chase two bags of recycling down the road earlier. That was fun.
It was warm and we sat out in this little cobbled street to have a coffee ....the wind picked up suddenly....literally chairs were blowing over and sandwich board signs were blowing up the street.....it was almost scary, but brilliant at the same time.
The wind is awful in Ireland and Wales....stay safe everyone.
Ophelia is a Cape Verde storm, lost its way and gone north. Storms born off of Cape Verde Africa normally zoom due west and become the hurricanes of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. So y'all are finally experiencing a hurricane.
Such strange climate these days.

I've greened you too. Fortunately, a red no longer detracts on the score. So it's just like...harsh language.

I'm in the dark as anyone. But I don't think it's the count that changes the message. I think that Ben or someone just decided that 'reds' were not nice.
When you think about the psychology, 'greens' are kinda like attaboys. But reds relate to the specific post, or poster. There's a great deal more malevolence to a red, than kindness to a green. Greens mean comradeship; reds are specific meanness.

You know, I think you are dead right on this Quill.
I will give a green when I see a good post that makes me think, or a funny one that makes me laugh.....it doesnt matter who has said it, the post gets the
I have to be really pissed off to give a red....and the people I like or respect seldom piss me off that much.....I have never given a red out of spite though.
