Tuesday night's Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief telethon brought together stars from around the world in a bid to raise millions of dollars for those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The hour-long special included performances and messages from A-list celebrities including: Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Cher, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, all asking viewers to donate to help with relief from the disastrous storms that hit the southern US.

Although the telethon was first announced amid the devastation from Harvey, it was expanded to raise money for victims of Irma, which struck parts of Florida. Estimates from various groups have said that both hurricanes caused between $150 billion and $290 billion in damage to Texas and Florida.

More than 60 people died during Harvey and 12 deaths have been reported in the US from Irma.

In the first hour of the special, generous viewers opened their wallets and raised more than $14million for victims of the storms, according to Billy Crystal.

Tommy, you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. The wind (180-mph) speeds lasted over 30-hours, making it a category 6 or 7.

The cat of a hurricane is measured by sustained wind speed...!!!

Irma had sustained wind speeds recorded at 185mph... making it cat 5...!!!

Look at the list of previous cat 5 hurricanes I posted... some had higher sustaind wind speeds than Irma...!!!

Still cat 5...!!!

Look up the 'labor day hurricane' of 1935... a gust of wind was so strong that it blew a woman across land into another town nearly 50 miles away from where she lived... still cat 5...!!!

Was that down to 'global warming/climate change' too back in 1935...!!!???

What about all the other big hurricanes that happened before this...!!!???

Or isn't it just a fact that hurricanes always have happened and always will happen in that part of the world...!!!???

But tommy, the gradient is how long are there sustained winds at 180 mph plus? Irma had sustained winds at greater than 180 mph for over 30-hours. That's the highest ever recorded.

You can select individual storms and point out their individual scores, but you don't generalize from specifics. Irma is the highest scoring all around.

Irma is just indicative. The proof of global worming is taken from the surface temperature of the water. Higher surface temperatures feed the strength of any Cape Verde storms as they cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The test therefore is not the storm as a dependent variable, but the temperatures as the independent variable. Irma was just a, see...I told you so!

No... the gradient is based on sustained winds of mph...

To be 'sustained wind' then it has to be sustained for over a certain threshold of time period... and on a rolling clock per wind speeds...

Irma registered a variety of wind speed gusts during its course/existence... but it still only measured a maximum sustained wind speed of 185mph throughout its course/existence... so it was a cat 5 hurricane during those periods...!!!

Read the list on link I posted... others that have happened previously in history have been greater sustained wind speeds...!!!

Still cat 5...!!!

You need to read about the 'Saffir–Simpson scale'... and stop waffling on about 'proof of global warming' when there has been numerous other equally (if not more) powerful hurricanes happen over the last 150 years...

The 1935 'labor day' hurricane for example...!

But life has always been here and therefore anything that happens in life isn't new, anything new would have happened at some earlier point in hunan life.

Green eyes are a genetic anomaly, they aren't new though and no longer an anomaly since millions of humans have green eyes, neither are they symptomatic of human kind evolving into something else, they are just mundane and ordinary green eyes.

I'm not denying that the climate is changing and is resulting in weather events that are stronger and more frequent.

My argument is with the belief that man (and farting cows) is solely responsible for the changes to the climate.

I do not believe that man has the ability to influence weather to any significant degree.
