I suspect an underlying motive to get your face in the news. Some, like Paris Hilton, do this routinely and as a matter of course. But it has long been known as a remedy for struggling public career.

Yes! The only other actor I've ever seen pull that off as well was Robert Redford in "All is Lost." Fantastic movie if you haven't seen it and one of the best endings I can think of.
