Armed police have shot a man and are searching for other suspected attackers after several people were stabbed in the Finnish city of Turku, officials say.

"Police shot the suspected perpetrator in the legs," police wrote on Twitter. "The person has been arrested. We recommend that people avoid central Turku."

One person was killed and eight taken to hospital in the rampage in the city center on Friday afternoon, Finnish broadcaster YLE reported.
