A university student is likely to become Australia's youngest-ever senator after the resignation of a politician he calls his "mentor".

UK-born Jordon Steele-John, 22, has agreed to replace Scott Ludlam in the Senate for the left-wing Greens party. Mr Ludlam quit last week, becoming the first of two senators to resign for holding dual citizenship - a status which bars politicians from office. Mr Steele-John, who has cerebral palsy, says he will be a disability advocate. He is tipped to replace Mr Ludlam because he was next in line on last year's election ballot paper, and he has the backing of his party.

It's a sure thing.
the Greens are lucky this fuck up, of having 2 ineligible senators, hasn't caused then to lose seats.

the Kid was on TV the other day, I think he has a good chance in politics. the youth and the wheelchair make him easily recognizable

The likes of Ed Milliband were criticised for being ignorant of the world outside politics. Some MPs came out of uni and after a brief stint as a researcher or analyst for a politician they are parachuted straight into a political seat.

I wonder if the trend of very young kids putting themslelves up for election started with that 20yo MP in Scotland. Some election candidates are literally babyfaced kids.

Smile

Poor little Jordan probably didn't expect to get elected first time 'round...

The Greens only poll around 9--10% of the vote, and many of those on their tickets usually don't give themselves much of a chance, only putting their names forward to make up the numbers..

I reckon for a few would be pollies they count it as a "learning experience", reckoning they might work their way up and hopefully get elected further down the track.
