Swiss drugs giant Novartis has launched two copycat treatments in the UK it claims have the potential to save the NHS tens of millions of pounds a year. The treatments, known as biosimilars, will offer cut-price versions of etarnecept for rheumatoid athiritis and rituximab for lymphoma, which were originally developed by America's Amgen and Switzerland's Roche under the brand names Enbrel and MabThera respectively. The two drugs are both in the NHS’s top six drugs by spend and cost it a combined total of £387m last year.

the NHS pays £3.23 for paracetamol when you can buy it for 19p. that would save millions every year as well.

That's interesting because rituximab is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Etanercept is not a first-line treatment for RA, but it's used if other treatments fail. The proof will be fairly obvious - if the biosimilars control the symptoms, they work.
