New Immigration Charge ‘Could Cost NHS Millions Of Pounds’
A new immigration charge could cost the NHS millions of pounds and make staff shortages worse, leading healthcare professionals have warned. The health service should be exempt from paying the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) when recruiting doctors and nurses from overseas, the British Medical Association (BMA) and Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said. Enforcing the levy - £1,000 per employee per year - would effectively penalise the NHS for recruiting workers from outside the EU to fill gaps in an already-stretched workforce, the organisations said in a letter to Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

Didge, do you not agree that starting to train our own people would be a good idea?

We already do train people Nicko and then many after years of training. Apply, obtain jobs abroad.
That needs to be fixed first, with a clause in their contract when training them. So they are unable to leave for a set number of years or pay to then apply and work abroad. Then after a decade of bringing the shortfall here up to date with people trained here. Before the NHS is charged a £1000 for employing skilled needed workers.

I always thought that, some stay here for there training and when they have a bit of experience they piss off to Oz or some such.
They should be made, when trainings finished, to work in the UK for 5 years !

I agree, that there should be a clause, that they cannot seek to find work abroad for the same number of years they had training on. So for Doctors, would be around 7 years.

LOL
yeah forcing someone to work for you and not allowing them to quit is called slavery, what you are suggesting is called indentured slavery.
What you have to do is PAY THEM to stay which means
You have to compete in a GLOBAL ECONOMY
it's not all bad globalization means that skilled individuals can sell their skills to the highest bidder. which is exactly what these individuals are doing.
this is again the case of the Uk having it head so firmly up its own arse that it can't accept reality and deal with it, Globalization is here to stay It doesn't matter how much pathetic hill shepherds cry about it. Ridiculous ideas like forcing people to stay on for too low pay will just discourage people from training at all, and no medical staff will go to the Uk for Fear of being pressed in to this pseudo slavery.. It's not the bad old days where you can force people to do what you want.
this plan of brexiters to shot the Uk in foot, Again, by charging for foreign workers is Stupid.
I have to ask are brexiters TRYING to turn the Uk 3rd world as quickly as possible?
as an out sider all I can see is idiots with a problem that cant accept reality so just keep making it worse Like if you make it bad enough it will magically stop.. that is just not how it works.

As an aside, slightly 'off-topic' :
There is a better "carrot and stick" approach to the issue of retaining doctors, nurses and teachers in a country, where that country has contributed in a major way to their education...
Offer to pay off their student debts/loans if they agree to work in certain areas (e.g. remote locations, certain fields of research..) for the next five years, on top of a market-based salary.
This proactive 'scholarship'-type system does work to a certain extent in Australia, and parts of the USA and Canada..

I don't think you can force people to work in this country really. You could say that they won't get financial help with their training unless they agree to do so I suppose. What if they can't get a job here though?

That's actually and xlnt idea. Veya is right in that imposing limits on work after education amounts to indentured servantry. The idea of paying off loans, etc., actually provides compensation.
We do something like that here in the US with teachers. Everyone knows how hard it is to keep people in education. Under this program, for every year one stays in education a year of the loans are forgiven...or some variation. It works very well.

no, not even close to an issue.
And besides We'd just pay them more in line with what ever the market demand is
they aren't choosing to move or stay to be spiteful or because they hate a nation or because they love a nation.
MOST people are not ultra nationalists like yourself and go to where they can get the more money and better lifestyle.
THIS is Globalization, This is how humans have improved society (for those with skills education and work ethics) since you were a boy.
we are not stuck solely operating in the economies in which we where born
Plus our leading imported experts are coming from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. And there is also a lot from India although less Indians are specialists.

Re: New Immigration Charge ‘Could Cost NHS Millions Of Pounds’
British nationals are only a small minority in the Oz health system these days -- way outnumbered by Asians, Africans, Indians and others -- who in turn are outnumbered by Aussies, Kiwis and Islanders as one group...
British health workers are here for a few simple reasons --
* Better pay rates
* Better conditions, and more appreciated than at home
* They return home with improved qualifications and wider experience
* Better weather, and living standards..
So, who can blame a few hundred Brit health workers each year, for wanting to spend a few years down here, rather than back in poor old 'miseryguts' UK ?
If the NHS wants them back, they should consider giving them a decent pay rise..
