UK to open its doors to millions of Hong Kong residents under Johnson's new immigration scheme
The Guardian reports:
Millions of Hongkongers will be able to begin applying to live and work in the UK when a historic immigration scheme for British National Overseas citizens finally opens its doors on Sunday.
On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the scheme, which offers a route to British citizenship, saying it honoured the UK’s commitment to its former citizens.
“I am immensely proud that we have brought in this new route for Hong Kong BN(O)s to live, work and make their home in our country,” Johnson said.
“In doing so we have honoured our profound ties of history and friendship with the people of Hong Kong, and we have stood up for freedom and autonomy – values both the UK and Hong Kong hold dear.”

Well considering China is committing genocide against the Uyghurs. We should open our doors to all those oppressed. As all the world should.
Of course this has to be carried out through a view that is practical.
Hence all the world should play a part in taking on people who need a safe haven
One country cannot do this alone, because there is the issue around housing, feeding etc

Good.
It stands to reason as soon as we could control the flood of EU citizens entering we could be more open to the wider world.
That may be a simplistic view, but as an island it's impossible to welcome everyone and anyone.

This is the crux of the matter. Britain embraced colonization when it was to their advantage...is it any different now, when the creek reverses its course and flows upstream?
When it turns out that the advantage of the relationship, originally conceived and initiated by Britain, works to the other's advantage, Britain must stand by the contract it made.

Smart move.
They will be bringing billions in cash and their capitalist mind set.
Hopefully Biden opens our doors to them too, so they can escape that oppressive left wing regime that will soon be in control of that tiny country.

I'm ok with this 300,000 coming if the rest of the immigration was brought down to zero for the next couple of years... And we ramp up the deportation of foreign criminals and bogus/failed asylum seekers!

Reciprocation is all very well, the colonisation while not perfect did take advantages where it went, when we already have 60 odd million on a small island with few natural resources left or jobs, one of the reasons for striking out in the first place, it doesn't seem like too good an idea for anyone.
