Breaking news : 'Van hits pedestrians' on London Bridge'

Armed police have been dispatched to an incident on London Bridge where a van has reportedly hit pedestrians, injuring several.

London Bridge station has been closed "at the request of police" following what has been described as a “major police incident”.

One witness told the BBC: “There was a white van driver speeding into several people. It carried on across the pavement around the traffic and towards the Shard area.”

The Met Police said on Twitter: "We are dealing with an incident on London Bridge, when we have more information we will update this Twitter feed."

Kumi de Costa was caught up with her two friends at the incident in Borough Market. She told the BBC what she saw:

"The cab driver turned into the market and we got stuck right in the middle of the shooting we were in a one-way street and couldn’t turn around.

"There were loads of shots being fired. Two people were on the floor behind the church with two or three people leaning over them.

"About 50 police were pointing guns at us - the cab driver had the laser pointed right at them, our hands were up, we were trying to get out so they shooed us away.

"A man was coming out of the restaurant, he had a napkin on his neck with blood pouring out, there was another man lying on the floor. I don’t know if he was in the recovery position or dead.

"We weaved through little side streets where the police were telling us to go to Blackfriars Bridge and we could see people looking over the side; people had maybe jumped over the bridge.

Witness Eric told the BBC he was on the south side of London Bridge when he saw the van on the wrong side of the road.

He said: "It veered to the right and people were trying to run away from it."
When it stopped, he said, three people got out and at first he thought they were going to help the people who had been hit.
But he said: "The three people literally started kicking them, punching them, and took out knives. It was a rampage really."

The three men ran off towards the nearby bars and restaurants and there was a shout of "this is for Allah", he added.

A black cab driver who picked up two witnesses told Sky News: "I picked up some passengers, there were two passengers, apparently they came out of the Black and Blue restaurant and how they described to me was they prevented the guys from getting into the restaurant. She actually knew that there bad people basically... they tried to break in.

"She managed to hold the door for a few seconds, but then I think they were overpowered. They managed to escape from a rear door, possibly saving a good 20 people's lives, as they mentioned whilst I took them home.

"They managed to get out the back, that's when they came out to me and I took them to Streatham.

"They were in shock. You can just judge by their face. She was almost in tears as well, both of them. They were just counting how many staff there were left behind and making phone calls.
"They were very shaky as well, so I just calmed them down as a black cab drive would do and I got them safely home."

The full London Ambulance statement: "We can confirm we have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London following the incident at London Bridge.

"We have also treated a number of people at the scene for less serious injuries.
"We have declared a major incident and continue to work closely with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure patients receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.

"As we are very busy dealing with this incident, we would ask the public to only call us in a genuine emergency and to call NHS 111 for urgent healthcare advice."

At least six people have been killed after attackers drove into pedestrians and stabbed people in central London.

Attackers drove a van at high speed into pedestrians on London Bridge just after 10pm on Saturday before continuing to drive from the bridge to Borough Market.

There, they jumped out of the van and stabbed people, including a British Transport Police officer who has serious but not life-threatening injuries to his face, head and leg.

Within eight minutes, armed police confronted three male attackers, shooting them dead in Borough Market.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: "Armed officers responded very quickly and bravely, confronting three male suspects who were shot and killed in Borough Market.

"The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes."

He added: "We believe three people were involved but we still have some more inquiries to be 100% confident of that."

At least 30 victims were taken to five hospitals across London, according to the city's ambulance service. More were treated at the scene for less serious injuries.

9 dead so far -- 6 victims, and 3 attackers (terrorists ?);
48 injured taken to hospital, plus more "walking wounded".

Police and ambo' response was less than 9 minutes after the attack started -- can't get much quicker than that.. cheers

Yes, that was a pretty fast response.

I wonder how long terrorists will think that these random attacks will work. People in pubs were chucking things at them to stop them, and now the general public might react much quicker to anyone who nips into a pub holding a large knife. They might even get better at jumping out of the way if a car is driven onto the pavement on a bridge.
