Save the Orcas

Two wild orca whales have been captured by Russian hunters, and are on their way to be displayed for human entertainment in a dolphinarium at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

White Sphere, the Russian company behind this, is just looking to make a fast buck from the tourists who will be descending on to Sochi during the Games. It couldn't care less that the orcas were stolen from their ocean home.

The mammals, which can grow up to 22ft long and swim 100 miles a day, are set to be kept in a “small concrete tank” after a 4,614-mile flight from the far east of Russia. Animal experts say that transporting orcas causes them stress, that keeping them in ­captivity shortens their life and can even turn them dangerously “psychotic”.

Tell White Sphere not to display these wild orcas for entertainment.

Reports have surfaced that the whales are, right now, bound for Sochi's 'Aquatoria', whose officials have remained quiet on the topic. Reporters’ requests for comment sent to the International Olympic Committee, Aquatoria, or its Moscow-based managing company White Sphere have not been returned.

This isn’t the first time White Sphere has done something like this -- reports say that it has captured eight wild orcas in the last year alone, all for public display. And according to Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), the Russian Federation’s attempt to catch orca whales over the years has resulted in several animals being killed.

The spotlight is now on Russian President Putin and the International Olympic Committee -- neither of whom can afford more embarrassment. Putin is putting his personal reputation on the line by hosting the Sochi Olympics, but he hasn’t done a great job of it so far. If we draw attention to White Sphere’s despicable behaviour now, just a week before the Games begin, there’s more chance that Putin and the IOC will take notice and that we win this.

Demand that White Sphere drops its plan to display the orcas.

The Sochi Winter Olympics has been embroiled in controversy. Over 400,000 of the SumOfUs community have already petitioned Coca Cola, as a sponsor of the Winter Olympics, to speak out on Russia’s brutal anti-gay laws. Now, thousands more of us are protesting the display of the wild orcas. We have one week left until the Sochi Olympics open. Let’s make sure our voices are heard.

I've got to save the poor people who have been flooded in England, the whales are way down the list I'm afraid.

Of course, it would be nice if we got back to what was happening to the Orca's, but I doubt that will be happening

You can't save them Keith, it will take dredging the rivers and a policy that means farmers only get their subsidies if they dig up their trees and keep the land clear, even though many studies have found that it's getting rid of the trees, both there and on the higher land, that is causing this. But the environment agency won't listen to anyone.

w hat some people do to wild animals and their pets disgusts me. I gave up watching the rspca programs on tv because of the sight of distressed animals.saying that I do think Cameron should help people with their flood damage,cut a few millions off aid for countrys that don't need it.

See the reason for the floods and the fact this government have made them worse, in the 'Private funding adds just 2% for flood defences'

Labour, Libs and Cons will not have the guts to stop foreign aid. They give away the people's money whilst the people suffer.

Oh dear. The floods are caused by giving FARMERS money to clear vegetation.

There doesn't need to be farms near you, it affects the whole water table in the whole of the country.

I disagree, we also needs underground reservoirs - huge ones in known catchment areas.

Unless the trees are reinstated, if you tried to do it by making the rivers deeper and wider, you would end up with a Mississippi running through every county. You have to tackle at the source, and the source is the stripping of vegetation.

I suggest you look up the terms "aquifers" and "sub artesian basin", just for starters..

DIG those rivers down below sea level, and the salt water from the oceans will rush back in until 'equilibrium' is restored...

DIGGING rivers and dams doesn't attract more rainfall ! Irrespective of what the movies might say !!

MAKING Rivers wider would both increase evaporation rates, and dump water into the oceans at an even faster rate ! SURELY that's the opposite result to what you are aiming for, Wozza ?  

DRAINING water from the hinterlands and inland at an increased rate would also mean stealing water from farmers, factories and communities that already depend on it ~ just look at China's "Three Rivers" disaster, to see what can happen when a few engineers, politicians and financiers run wild..

THEN there are other side issues such as acid sulphate soils, increased salinity, erosion, algal blooms...

Orca's belong to the dolphin family but:

The killer whale (Orcinus orca), also referred to as the orca whale or orca, and less commonly as the blackfish, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from the frigid Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas. Killer whales as a species have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as sea lions, seals, walruses, and even large whales. Killer whales are regarded as apex predators, lacking natural predators.

We have some underground reservoirs, but they are mostly man made.

We are not trying to attract rain, we are getting too much of it and have very bad flooding problems at the moment.


Now, is there any bloody chance that we can stick to the plight of the orca's in the op!!!!!!

Even if I am stuck at home I feel I can do something through them.

Okay....I'll adopt a Walrus but they must be house trained.

Reduce the world's population - it'll solve a whole host of problems.

As for orca's - I love seeing their displays in the zoo - such cool animals  :D
