This Is Why Labour Under Corbyn Are Complete Snowflakes -
Jeremy Corbyn has warned that tough new GCSE exams introduced by the Tories will make pupils feel “devalued” and put them off education “for the rest of their lives”. The Labour leader and Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner attacked changes to the grading system and claimed some subjects such as English Literature were now being turned into memory tests.
Speaking at the party’s launch of its education policies for the general election, they said youngsters will be left feeling like “failures” thanks to the the reforms set in train by former ministers Michael Gove and Nicky Morgan.
Under the changes, pupils will no longer receive traditional A*- G grades. Instead, exams will be marked from nine to one, with nine considered a higher grade than the current A*, leaving many pupils of all abilities expecting ‘lower’ grades. And in a major reform to the English literature GCSE, pupils this summer will no longer be allowed to take books into the exam and will have to commit to memory extracts from two novels, a play and 15 poems.

So where school kids for decades had to memories, this is now seen as a hardship?
WTF?

My son is sitting these exams soon and just had one of his mock exams come back as a 9 - he explained it's higher than an A* but he wasn't sure why they'd done this, it wasn't really explained.
Only 5% of the country got a 9 - according to his teacher - but it seems to be a new thing this year.

Well considering Asia is miles ahead now of the west with education. Plus the fact in the past exams were hard, I am glad to see a return to this. I had no books to bring in with me and had to memories countless things for all exams. We need to stop pandering here. Its meant to be hard. To say that pupils will be put off is just a copout and shows that they want to make it easy, when it should require lots of studying.

I agree! My son is always revising and uses these little memory cards he's made. I get to test him most nights so I'm learning some new stuff myself.

Yeah. He gets his brain from me but his ability to work and revise.....pffffff. I was terrible.
Thanks didge. I'm actually proud of the hard work he's put in..... the grades he may get will just be a bonus. He's really impressed me with his dedication and concentration.

Indeed and at least he is wanting to do well, where countless others simply want to spend time on their iPad, game consoles, social media etc. They simple want to an easy ride and not have to make an effort and simply get by by having fun instead. Glad to see no they have to work hard. It will also hopefully bring about a good ethos to work hard for not only within school, but also after.

As seen this is a fine example of the rewards of hard work.
You must be very proud Eddie.

under labour everybody is expected to be equally stupid, under the tories it is somewhat different.
it would be a miracle if everyone got the top marks and would suggest the fix is in.
kids cant all be winners and that is a life lesson they should learn before leaving school.

Which part of Asia is that then? Certainly not South East Asia where education is relatively dire and based on rote learning. Critical thinking is also non-existant in this part of the world.
The problem with education in the UK is that it all became focussed on passing exams rather than actual learning. I don't see how changing from A*-F to numbers actually changes anything. But it is the learning not the testing that truly determines how good a student is.

Japan, China for example
What is wrong with having to study to pass exams?
Are you claiming studying does not make students learn?
Shall e scrap Music grades for musicians?
Hell, what is the point eh?
How about any qualification to obtain many jobs?
Again I point to Asia, where they are leaps and bounds above the west.
I see making the tests harder instills what there once was. An ethos to succeed, which is sorely lacking in this country. Less and less people are ambitious, because this lack and will to succeed is severely lacking from within the schooling system.

so whats diferent in this "new" system...to what WE (my generation) had to do
we had to LEARN (i.e commit to memory) EVERYTHING, and we didnt have calculators etc.
hence I can out calculate/out think and out knowlege without resorting to google any kid of the present generation (and likely the 2 before....) on ANY subject of import.

Why cant the english literature exam contain some text from one or more previously unstudied books, for those sitting the exam to have to then read through and answer questions on, as well as answer some more general questions about the fundamentals of literature and some of the styles/formats etc...!?

for some bizaare reason I can still use log tables, calculate square roots by repeated divison/subtraction in my head and convert from meric to imperial and vice versa without a calculator....

besides you old fossil...you are from a generation BEFORE me....so you learnt by the same methods, including I bet, getting your knuckles rapped with a ruler for getting your times tables wrong in class...

using the logic that Europe is it's own continent (it not tectonically) than Asia based around is Japan China Korea Taiwan and Mongolia. south east Asia is another place, India (tectonically separate) is it's own place, central Asia/Russia, middle east etc all their own places

See, this is PRECISELY the point I was trying to make in another thread, few weeks ago ....... except that, for ''Asia'' simply substitute the word "Africa" in that sentence. Someone did a thread title and mentioned the word "Africa" as if it was just a small mass of land. Far from it, it's a huge continent with numerous countries, and if the country being discussed isn't mentioned, at least the region of the continent should be - ie east, west, north, south or central.
Thorin, I don't want to get you agitated here, but you did smack my butt hard, and accused me of "going off topic" and others queued up to tell me off, when all I was doing was politely pointing out what Eilzel has just pointed out too. It's good to see that you are somewhat more tolerant and lenient nowadays, Thorin.
Our Geography teacher banned words like "Asia, Africa, Australia, America" in our essays, she felt it was too vague and lazy to mention entire continents as if they were just one small town. This forced us to be more specific, and thus we learned the names of many countries/states and the differences between them, and this practice ultimately improved our grades. She knew what she was doing, a wise lady!

Asia is a big place Jules, so how do want to play this?
Shall we ignore colonialism as European as part of history, due to someones insensitivity?
Shall we just cast colonialism from Europe as just lazy and not be more specific?
How specific would you like me to get and based on what European country and year based on who was leading??
Sorry your teacher fails to understand history, because in history, Geography, is vitally important
