Eddie Will Appreciate This - Toddler shuts down cashier who questioned black doll choice
Atoddler’s brilliant response to a cashier who questioned her choice of a black doll has been shared by thousands of social media users. The cashier reportedly told Sophia: “We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.” Her mother Brandi Benner, from South Carolina, shared her story on social media, explaining they were paying for the doll in a Target store when the woman asked if she “was going to a birthday party”.
Nick and I told Sophia that after 1 whole month of going poop on the potty, she could pick out a special prize at Target. She, of course, picked a new doll. The obsession is real. While we were checking out, the cashier asked Sophia if she was going to a birthday party. We both gave her a blank stare. She then pointed to the doll and asked Sophia if she picked her out for a friend. Sophia continued to stare blankly and I let the cashier know that she was a prize for Sophia being fully potty trained. The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, "Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?" Sophia finally found her voice and said, "Yes, please!" The cashier replied, "But she doesn't look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you." I immediately became angry, but before I could say anything, Sophia responded with, "Yes, she does. She's a doctor like I'm a doctor. And I'm a pretty girl and she's a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?" Thankfully the cashier decided to drop the issue and just answer, "Oh, that's nice." This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren't born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful.#itswhatsontheinsidethatcounts #allskinisbeautiful#teachlove #teachdiversity#thenextgenerationiswatching

Nice story.
I know of one poster on here , no name, (but we all know who) who will say, or at least think this is fake , or what a horrible little girl she is for deigning to adore a black dolly.

I am going to do a Tommy and say I find this one hard to believe.
For one....what adult writes about their child "going poop on the potty"
For two.....if anyone was as stupid as the cashier allegedly was, would she really be allowed out to work?

If she was related to Tommy, then yes, I could easily believe someone is that stupid.

It sounds too smaltzy to be true.
And I actually did have a black doll called Nancy when I was little, I loved her, but I doubt even if facebook HAD been invented back then my mum would have written about my love for her all over social media.

Mums who are honest and like to tell the story of what they see is wrong by some people.
I have no reason to doubt this and why would the cashier be sacked?
As much as the cashiers views were poor, they did not break any law.
The other day we had the story of the girl doing a sticky poo remember and asking for her bum to be wipe?
You believed that story syl?

I didn't mean the cashier should be sacked Thor...I meant if she was so stupid to be asking customers such ridiculous questions she shouldn't be allowed out of the house in the first place.

Are you saying there is not bigoted people out in the real world Syl?
Things like this happen and I have no doubt it did happen.
What you have to ask is why would she lie on this?
I see no reason that she would lie and its clear by the picture her daughter loves the doll.
Eddie posted a video on the poor perceptions some kids have of black dolls.

I had a black doll decades ago when I was small, no one ..and I mean no one ever commented on the fact I used to take her everywhere, and she didnt look like me, so I find it hard to believe that a grown woman can make such comments to a child in this supposedly enlightened day and age.
However, I do remember the videos about a childs perception of black dolls v white dolls...I found it really sad, but they were childrens views not adult views.
I get the point you are making though....those views come from somewhere, they are not born with them.

But how do you really know if people did comment and you were not aware, due to your age Syl?
People can comment out of earshot or later on in the day.
The fact is, and based on the video that Eddie posted, its very easy to see how both in adults and children people can whether inadvertently or deliberately be prejudice in their choices.
Anyway, we will have to agree to disagree and again I see no reason to think or believe she is lying.

Re: Eddie Will Appreciate This - Toddler shuts down cashier who questioned black doll choice
Why is cashier wrong in asking why girl doesn't want a doll that 'looks more like her'... when we are constantly told that there MUST be a selection of different coloured dolls made available for all kids as they all desperately want/need to have one that 'looks more like them'...!?
Why is it that a white kid can pick a black doll to love and play with... without thinking anything of colour etc...!?
But black kids MUST have black dolls... or else it's somehow 'racist' etc...!?
Maybe the white kid has already picked up on the anti white agenda that permeates through media at the moment and that has influenced her choice...!?
And I'm sure it won't be long before some anti white racist tries to accuse her of something along the lines of her living out her white supremacist roots by picking a little black slave to have control of etc...!?
Maybe she would have preferred to have a 'golliwog'... what a nasty racist Nazi she is...!!!???

Re: Eddie Will Appreciate This - Toddler shuts down cashier who questioned black doll choice
Why are you referring to a black doll as a golliwog, when its not a golliwog?
And you wonder why some do not take you seriously Tommy?
I think the child answered your question, that the doll does look like her, with beautiful hair and is a doctor.
Where is the view black kids must have black dolls?
Anyway, I see no further point in addressing someone who looks with intent to bring down the thread to his bigoted thinking.
Enjoy the silence Tommy, I ill however address others on here

I did not refer to the black doll as a golliwog... the fact you think I did, is again showing your complete inability to understand/comprehend what is actually being said!!!
Either you are doing this deliberately... or you have some underlying condition that causes you to have problems with understanding/comprehension etc...

No, I did simply misread what you said and can admit that I did.
I made an error, happy to admit I did.
See not difficult, is it Tommy?
The point is you did step in with your typical bigoted views, to attempt to derail the thread.
You are just annoyed because you made errors on another thread and have an inability to admit when wrong.
You came then on here to take the piss out of a nice thread.
That says it all to me, the kind of person you are Tommy.
So, you think, anyone that misreads something, which would include you, has a condition.
You base this off no understanding of neurology or physiology.
I rest my case
Now, as seen, you have no interest in talking about the topic other than to take the piss out of a nice story and this is seen by your view to throw in the Golliwog doll into the debate with no idea on the childs views. You again insinuate.
You are now on ignore until you learn some respect for threads.

I think the thing is, growing up white in a majority white country is quite different from growing up black (or Latino or Asian) in a majority white country, especially for a kid.
When you're a minority kid, you're trying to figure out where you fit into society, and to have toys that look like you is reassuring -- precisely because not as many real people in your little part of the world look like you.
This is actually a form of white privilege in majority-white countries -- white people will never feel like they don't belong in their own country because of the color of their skin. You take an African-American person, though -- they were born here, generations of their family were born here, and their original American ancestors had no say in the matter -- and I'm sure it must be frustrating when they see things like unarmed black people being shot by police. It would be the sensation of feeling unwelcome in the country you and your family was born in.
As to the cashier, asking the girl if she wouldn't prefer a white doll is basically saying white is better than black, no?

No dolls look like real children or real adults anyway, whatever colour they are. It all sounds a bit unbelievable to me.
