U.K. Posthumously Pardons Thousands of Gay Men
The government of the United Kingdom on Tuesday pardoned thousands of gay and bisexual men who were found guilty of decades-old consensual sexual offenses before they died. The pardons, which were first announced last year, have now been made official after a Policing and Crime Bill—the so-called Alan Turing Law—received Royal Assent. The bill's enactment means thousands of men will be cleared of the now-abolished crimes. Turing himself was pardoned in 2013 for committing gross indecency. People convicted of the crimes who are still alive may apply to have those convictions removed from their records.
